Dec. 7, 2007, the second largest city in the United States, remembered Pearl Harbor Day with an emphatic vote for peace as the Los Angeles City Council unanimously voted to support HR 808, proposed legislation in the U.S. House of Representatives to create a cabinet-level U.S. Department of Peace. If established, the Department will work proactively to reduce crime and violence here in the United States and abroad. The resolution now goes to the Mayor for signature.

"With Los Angeles on board, our nationwide city council campaign continues to gather momentum," said Peace Alliance Board President Marianne Williamson. "Every community in America will benefit when this legislation passes, as it increases support for violence prevention programs statistically proven to reduce crime and violence in our homes, schools, and communities. We need a Department of Peace, and it's gratifying to see local governments taking the lead."

According to the resolution, introduced by councilmember Bernard C. Parks, "we are now in a new millennium, and the time has come to review age-old challenges with new thinking wherein we can conceive of peace as not simply being the absence of violence, but the active presence of the capacity for a higher evolution of the human awareness, of respect, trust, and integrity."

Terry Mason, State Co-coordinator for the Los Angeles, Valley and Santa Barbara areas said, "Los Angeles joins 30 other governing councils around the country, including Oakland, Cleveland, Atlanta, Chicago, West Hollywood and San Francisco in showing this strong measure of support for true leadership towards proactively building peace in our communities, country and the world. What better way to honor Pearl Harbor Day than to show support for legislation that will strategically create peace, both domestically in the streets of Los Angeles, and work to end the beginnings of all wars."

Domestically, the Department will research, propose and facilitate practical, field-tested solutions to reduce and prevent violence. It will provide additional financial and institutional heft to strengthen and complement our current approach to violence, focusing on prevention through multi-layered strategies, including increased funding for local programs already proven effective at reducing and preventing violence. A Peace Academy, on par with the Military Service Academies, will train civilian peacekeepers and the military in the latest nonviolent conflict resolution techniques and approaches.

Internationally, the Department will research and analyze foreign policy and recommend to the President ways to address the root causes of war. The Department will also provide expert advice to the President on nonviolent means of diffusing or dealing with international crises.

"This legislation to establish a Department of Peace will help to stop violence against women, getting to the root causes of domestic violence, sexual assault, and gang violence by supporting programs to prevent future violence of this nature. Teaching school children nonviolent communication skills to solve their conflicts before they escalate into violence will build a more peaceful and safer society," said Jerilyn Stapleton, Congressional District Team Leader in California's 28^th district and Los Angeles City Council Resolution Team Leader.

The legislation is currently co-sponsored by 68 members of the U.S. House of Representatives.

We are blessed caretakers of the Earth. This has always been so. Caring for our Earth home is indeed a great responsibility that calls us to respect and honor all life. Our Earth walk is a wondrous journey, one that gifts us with the opportunity to learn all the wonderful intricacies of personal balance, harmony and natural equilibrium.

Mother Earth is our teacher, and attunement with her reveals the truth of our Divine Being. In the words of visionary Earth Walker, Chief Seattle " Earth does not belong to us; we belong to Earth". As children of the Earth, we must heed the signs and respect the Earth wisdom emanating through the biorhythms of Nature.

Human consciousness is a curious phenomena. Infinite in potential, Consciousness is intricately linked with (you could say it is synonymous with) Universal Energy (also known as prana,life force). When Pure Consciousness is filtered into the human experience, the polarities outside the physical plane of experience are in harmony. Yet we perceive separation and feel isolated from our Source.

Within the human experience there is a great yearning to feel a connection with our Source. Much of our energy and focus is projected into searching for and consolidating the inherent connecting we have to Source. Our attention gets diverted, distracted and enraptured by the energy unfolding within and around us. Through the faculties of perceptual awareness we can become fixated, focussed, stuck -- even obsessed -- with the vibration of various energy forms and expressions.

Energy work of any kind carries with it a great responsibility. One needs to remain inherently aware, for often there is great paradox in this calling. All is not what it may appear to be. There are those that seek to use their energy to manipulate, enforce and enslave the mind. Energy manipulators may employ various means of mind control, including the guise of deception and the use of emotional hooks. Alarmingly, there have been perilous times in our human history where mass energy manipulation has resulted in grave harm to our Earth. Sudden and abrupt changes to the Earth's energy field could create a massive energy imbalance. Could this be the cause of some of the massive Earth changes? Did such energy imbalances precede some of the most catastrophic events in our Earth's story?

There is great ferver at this time concerning an event that is planned to take place on July 17th. The event is called Fire in the Grid, and the plan is for a lot of people to intentionally send energy directly into the Earth, with the intent to 'heal' it. Perhaps you may already have heard about it. On the surface, it seems that this event could be a unique opportunity to collectively meditate and intentionalize peace on Earth. However, there are grave concerns about the wisdom of channeling our energy into the 'grid' of our Earth.

Do we really know what effect this may have? Many of us want to do something helpful. But will participating in a mass energy transfer be something helpful - or could it actually be harmful? Again I am guided to the heartfelt wisdom Earth Visionary, Chief Seattle " Whatever befalls the earth befalls the son of the earth. Man did not weave the web of life; he is merely a strand of it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself".

Fellow light workers and peace makers, as a child of the Earth, I implore you to please meditate and reflect on the wisdom gifted from the heart of Mother Earth before you agree to participate in this group event? Ask questions. Identify within your heart and mind the true source of this energy directive. Visit uTube and check out the videos about this event with an open heart and mind. This event has generated much emotional and spiritual fervor charged with the hope of healing our planet. Alarmingly, no one seems to be questioning or exploring the energy implications that this event might have. And so it is that I write, to ask you dear friend, to please seek out further knowledge about the true nature of this event, and then meditate on the possible spiritual and energy implications. Just like the Earth, we contain within our essence the Miracle of Love. Love never fails.

Flipping the Trigger

War is not inevitable as some would have us believe. Peace can be created by identifying and understanding the causes of war. By knowing what triggers this most violent of human behaviors, we can work to pull it out by its roots. The skeptics among us may scoff at the notion of peace on earth. But we are hopeful. There are successful illustrations that peace is not only preferable to violence and war, not only possible, but has already taken hold among many nations and many people.

Experts in the fields of non-violent communication, social justice, conflict resolution, peace advocacy, behavioral science and others have documented in extensive fashion the causes of war. It is clear that the reasons for war are complex and fluid:

Lust for power and material wealth.
Economic disparity and inequality.
Ideological differences based on intolerance of others’ values or morals, and nationalism fueled by politicians and/or religious leaders.
Conflicting religious beliefs.
Ethnic and cultural differences based on long-running animosities and conflicts.
Desire for natural, industrial, and technological resources.

Some experts would likely define the above in much greater detail, but our task is to offer a broad view to show a better way, a flip. Those desiring a detailed examination can visit the 50th Annual Pugwash Conference website (www.pugwash.org) on Eliminating the Causes of War.

A basic principle of life is polarity—the relationship of opposing energies or forces. It stands to reason that taking each cause of war in the list and looking for its opposite may be a wise course. But human nature is not so simple. As we stated before, the reasons for war are complex and fluid. On the surface it is logical to think that in order to stop war based on intolerance of ideological differences we need to instill tolerance. Ah...easier said than done.

How is tolerance encouraged? We can suggest that showing that "we are all one" is a good start. Accentuating our similarities and finding common ground seems a good notion. Using methods of non-violent communication, employing conflict resolution techniques, and educating children at an early age to be open and accepting of others in order to break the generational cycles of intolerance also sounds reasonable. Exhibiting patience and understanding with people who may have rigid views and strong egos would be useful.

But to fully understand the origins of war, we turn to those who dedicate their lives to world peace. These are the heroes we should be celebrating. The Movement for the Abolition of War (MAW) web site (www.abolishwar.org.uk) offers the following suggestions for creating a culture of peace:

Educate for peace, human rights and democracy.
Counter the adverse effects of globalization.
Advance the sustainable and equitable use of environmental resources.
Eradicate colonialism and neo-colonialism.
Eliminate racial, ethnic, religious and gender intolerance.
Promote gender justice.
Protect and respect children and youth.
Promote international democracy and just global governance.
Proclaim active nonviolence.
Eliminate communal violence at the local level.
Enlist world religions in transforming the culture of violence into a culture of peace and justice

The Movement for the Abolition of War takes it further and offers a plan for disarmament and human security. The idea is that we can be secure without the threat of annihilation. This makes great sense:

Global action plan—Implement a global action plan to prevent war.
Demilitarize—Demilitarize the global economy by reducing military budgets and shifting resources toward human security programs.
Eliminate nuclear weapons—Negotiate and ratify an international treaty to eliminate nuclear weapons.
Prevent use of conventional weapons—Prevent proliferation and use of conventional weapons, including light weapons, small arms and guns and safeguard personal security.
Ban landmines—Ratify and implement the landmine ban treaty.
Prevent weapon development—Prevent the development and use of new weapons and new military technologies, including a ban on depleted uranium and the deployment of weapons in space.
Control biological weapons—Encourage universal adherence to and implementation of the biological weapons convention and the chemical weapons convention.
Accountability—Hold states and corporations accountable for the impact of military production, testing and use on the environment and health.
Civil society movement—Build a civil society movement for the abolition of war.

Sound impossible? Read on as we show how people around the globe have found the courage to speak truth to power and change their societies’ belief that violence is inevitable.

Don’t Know Much About History

Much has been written about humankind’s unquenchable thirst for blood and destruction. In fact, there are those who espouse the belief that all life comprises stages of creation, maintenance or destruction, so therefore our penchant for violence through war—the destruction part of the theory—is human nature and cannot be quelled. This is simply not true.

Consider the events of the Velvet Revolution, or as the Czechs prefer, the November Events of 1989 when massive demonstrations and work stoppages toppled the Communist regime of Gustav Husak. Without a shot being fired the people of Czechoslovakia, led by two groups, the Civic Forum and People Against Violence, overthrew their oppressors. Despite calls for retribution against the former Communist leaders, Vaclav Havel insisted that his newly elected government would not partake in the bloody repression that they had worked so hard to overcome.

After centuries of subjugation and decades of apartheid, the people of South Africa peacefully rejected the elected government and voted overwhelmingly to replace it with one that was more tolerant of all people. Nelson Mandela, previously imprisoned for life as a dissident, was elected President of South Africa. Rather than prey on the inhumane slights done to him and his people as an excuse for retribution, President Mandela instead instituted the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The Commission heard testimony from victims of violent acts, atrocities and human rights abuses committed against South African blacks. The TRC provided an outlet for thousands of victims to be heard, and also allowed perpetrators to confess their crimes in exchange for immunity. This lead to a time of great healing in South Africa and became the process through which democracy flourished.

If further evidence of a flip is needed one only need look at Europe, which after half a century of two devastating world wars, decided they had enough bloodletting and needed to work toward common goals. Now, the European nations have formed the European Union, giving equal rights to all citizens of the member nations regardless of their country of origin.

Or perhaps we have all forgotten the great Soviet menace, which shadowed our lives and instilled fear in U.S. citizens for four decades. It was dismantled without violence by the visionary Mikhail Gorbachev, who saw that the constant competition of warmongering between the Soviet Union and the United States was an insane zero sum game which no one could win. President Gorbachev simply decided he wasn’t going to play that game anymore—and he quit. End of the Soviet Union, end of the Cold War.

So when someone says to you that war is inevitable and our differences are too hard to overcome, give them a few of the examples above—and the ones that follow…

It’s a Matter of Culture

Believe it or not, there are peaceful societies to which we can look for inspiration. The Zuni tribe of the American Southwest, the Arapesh of New Guinea, the Semai of Malaysia, the Xingo of Brazil, the Kogi tribe of Peru, and the Buid of Mindoro are all societies that accept the possibility of violence but stigmatize anger, violence, boasting and arguing. They honor those who ascribe to generosity and gentleness. These are cultures that promote the importance of the individual to the greater good of all.

So, it can be done. It is a matter of culture. It is a matter of who and what we choose to be. It is matter of vision, of will, of heart.
If the United States turned its great power into a force for good we would reap untold benefits. Our might could indeed stop all wars. We could support the United Nations in real peacekeeping efforts rather than token exercises with no impact. We could educate every child in our country teaching them critical thinking and self-reliance, instilling confidence so that our leaders cannot mislead us into unnecessary conflicts. We could redirect a full fifty percent of the defense budget (and still outspend everyone else) toward the Apollo Alliance and create a strong energy-efficient country that doesn’t need foreign adventures to feed its energy addiction. We could eradicate poverty. We could focus our energies on cleaning up the environment. We could provide health care to every man, woman and child in this great nation regardless of income. We could tend to the elderly and allow them grace and dignity in their twilight years. We could reduce violence in our own streets. We could put our attention on preventing drug addiction rather than incarceration.

We can turn an upside-down world Right Side Up in just a few short years. A dream, you say? A fool’s errand? What is the upside-down alternative? More bloodshed? More dead innocents? More crying mothers and distraught fathers? More anger, rage and retribution? More of the same is not an answer.

The flip is occurring. But this one, perhaps the most important of them all, requires you. It cannot happen without you. The world needs your commitment, your strength, your resolve and your enduring love to make the flip toward worldwide peace. We all deserve a better world. Let’s create it together.

While exploring Zaadz I was drawn to a discussion in which the question is put forth: "Is peace possible?".

I believe that Peace abounds within the moment ~ as natural, unconditioned essence of being. I am Peace. You are Peace. Peace abounds within All living beings. Yet in this vast, beautiful world, we are conditioned to think, feel and believe that suffering is normal. Through conditioning we give energy to suffering, through our thoughts, feelings and observations. Moreover, the pull of duality has us oscillating between polar oppositives, and life becomes a search for meaning and balance.

Exploring the ancient mystics through the passage of time, one begins to discern the truth. In essence, the truth that abides within you. The essence of your being is timeless...it is not subject to the same laws that govern the balance of existance within the physical world. The truth illumines the luminous essence of self. The boundless, unconditioned, essence of self radiates with infinite potential to create many wondrous realities.

I believe that aligning our mind, thoughts, and feelings with this truth is the first step in actualizing the peace that IS. The key to shifing the focus from the external world and our perception of it – abides within each of us.

Interestingly, when we inwardly shift our focus new questions arise, creating new pathways within the mind. For example, instead of looking out at what does not appear to be manifesting (lack), we instead choose to reflect on the infinite abundance of the Universe. When one observes the natural flow of Nature, something wondrous is revealed. Nature is always in a state of growth... abundance abounds as vital, life giving light and energy flows through the Universe.

As we look out at the world through eyes of Love we open more and more, to the divine nature of the Universe, to the abundant peace that IS.

In yoga philosophy, there is a Sanskrit word, Satya, which translates to inner truth. The calling of your truest self invites you to experience the peace that you are. Trust in the power of love to guide you, as you take a quantum leap into a new way of thinking, feeling, being and experiencing.

The question "Is peace possible" evokes some new questions for me, for example:

" In what new ways can I respond to life in order to share the peace that abounds within me, as me"?

-- and, "How can I transmute my focus on lack and give energy to a new way of thinking and being based upon the peace that I am"?

Making the leap through conscious realization creates a ripple that becomes a wavesong of joy… and this joyful energy amplifies “peace consciousness”. We are all in this together. Every moment gifts us with the opportunity to remember who we are, and what it is we wish to create.

Hi Joshua,

Welcome to our pod, thank you for sharing your inspired vision for transforming the US.

I like your idea and feel it could be expanded to include friends from other countries and thereby establish community links all around the world. You mention creating a website and this opens your vision to a worldwide audience (and indeed many Zaadzters herald from all around the world). Being from Australia, the focus on the US holds relevence, although it would be beneficial to have more of a regional focus, here in Australia. I'm sure the same holds true for Zaadzters outside the US.

I believe that creating change in our world begins with individuals making a shift in awareness, attitudes and day to day behavior. It would be wonderful to unite the
many intentional peace makers among us, and a create a new kind of global community - one that honors personal responsibility.

I for one, am interested in your vision and would like to know more. What are some of the specific goals relating to what you intend to co-create?

The children are the dreamers, and it is so crucial that we encourage them to flourish, physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. The world in which we live in, generally does not support the dynamic and creative flow of childlike innocense. As a community, we need to find new ways to support the flowering of human potential. The children are our teachers. These flowering souls teach by example, showing us that it is through observing, playing and letting go, that one may spontaneously and automatically connect with their natural, compassionate, free-flowing nature.
