I bow deeply and am honored to be invited to cut the inauguration ribbon with these few words that I read early this morning:

The most visible creators I know of are those artists whose medium is LIFE itself, the ones who express the impossible ————without brush, hammer, clay or guitar.  They neither paint nor sculpt ————their medium is BEING.  Whatever their presence touches has increased life.  They see and don't have to draw.  They are the artists of

BEING ALIVE

                                                                 (author unknown)

And you, who are now present witnessing this inauguration ceremony, you are here because (perhaps surprisingly even to yourself) you are numbered among those artists of BEING ALIVE.  The fact that you are here says it.

We thank you for your presence and the gift that your presence is to all whose life you touch.

Do visit frequently at the new room: “Life at the end of the Rainbow - A Journal” and tell of your LIFE NOW, at the end of the Rainbow.

NAMASTE!

Claps and merriment! Thank you for cutting the ribbon, Joyous.

One of my young friends had sent me a link that I didn't then know where to post in this group.

There's a place for it now:

[ahem!]
clearing throat, taking the podium and declaiming said poem:

WARNING
~Jenny Joseph
When I am an old woman I shall wear purple
With a red hat which doesn't go and doesn't suit me.
And I shall spend my pension on brandy and summer gloves
And satin sandals, and say we've no money for butter.
I shall sit down on the pavement when I'm tired
And gobble up samples in shops and press alarm bells
And run my stick along the public railings
And make up for the sobriety of my youth.
I shall go out in my slippers in the rain
And pick the flowers in other people's gardens …

The ending of the poem pleases its readers when the woman says …

But maybe I ought to practice a little now?
So people who know me are not too shocked and surprised
When suddenly I am old, and start to wear purple.

One of my favorite lines is:  “And run my stick along the public railings”.  At the time when I was a young girl growing up in the city, many homes, porches and yards had fences of wood or iron and I used to walk along running a stick along them.

Oh, the ribbons?  Some remind me of those little party things when blown into it makes a noise and a strip of tissue comes rolling out with a feather at the end.

It's been a Grand Opening Party with so many people stopping by.

So many telling of their connections with the Rainbow.

Like reviewing the greeting cards after a celebration, I'll be going back from time-to-time, to read and be refreshed by the comments.

The Story of the Rainbow

Once upon a time, all the colours in the world started to quarrel; each claimed that she was the best, the most important, the most useful, the favourite…

Green said: “Clearly I am the most important. I am the sign of life and of hope. I was chosen for grass, trees, leaves — without me all the animals would die. Look out over the countryside and you will see that I am in the majority.”

Blue interrupted: “You only think about the earth, but consider the sky and the sea. It is water that is the basis of life and this is drawn up by the clouds from the blue sea. The sky gives space and peace and serenity. Without my peace you would all be nothing but busybodies.”

Yellow chuckled: “You are all so serious. I bring laughter, gaiety and warmth into the world. The sun is yellow, the moon is yellow, the stars are yellow. Every time you look at a sunflower the whole world starts to smile. Without me there would be no fun.”

Orange started next to blow her own trumpet: “I am the colour of health and strength. I may be scarce, but I am precious for I serve the inner needs of human life. I carry all the most important vitamins. Think of carrots and pumpkins, oranges, mangoes and pawpaws. I don’t hang around all the time, but when I fill the sky at sunrise or sunset, my beauty is so striking that no one gives another thought to any of you.”

Red could stand it no longer. He shouted out: “I’m the ruler of you all, blood, life’s blood. I am the colour of danger and of bravery. I am willing to fight of a cause. I bring fire in the blood. without me the earth would be empty as the moon. I am the colour of passion and love; the red rose, poinsettia and poppy.”

Purple rose up to his full height. He was very tall and he spoke with great pomp: “I am the colour of royalty and power. Kings, chiefs and bishops have always chosen me for I am a sign of authority and wisdom. People do not question me — they listen and obey.”

Indigo spoke much more quietly than all the others, but just as determinedly: “Think of me, you all become superficial. I represent thought and reflection, twilight and deep waters. You need me for balance and contrast, for prayer and inner peace.”

*    *    *

And so the colours went on boasting, each convinced that they were the best. Their quarrelling became louder and louder. Suddenly there was a startling flash of brilliant white lightning; thunder rolled and boomed. Rain started to pour down relentlessly. The colours all crouched down in fear, drawing close to one another for comfort.

Then Rain spoke:

“You foolish colours, fighting among yourselves, each trying to dominate the rest. Do you not know that God made you all? Each for a special purpose, unique and different. He loves you all. He wants you all. Join hands with one another and come with me. He will stretch you across the sky in a great bow of colour, as a reminder that he loves you all, that you can live together in peace

— a promise that he is with you,
— a sign of hope for tomorrow.”

And so whenever God has used a good rain to wash the world, He puts the rainbow in the sky, and when we see it, let us remember to appreciate one another.

Thank you torchholder, for sharing with us The Story of the Rainbow, based on an Indian legend.
The Rainbow is a totem for me, too.  As a child looking for the end, when I got to where I figured it was, it was always further out.

It became established in my heart one Sunday morning in church.  I was scheduled to read the scriptures that morning.  Standing at the podium I noticed on the cover of the book that I was going to read from, the words:  “And I place my bow in the sky, a sign that I will never abandon you.”

I don't know why but my first thought was of a weapon, as in bow-and-arrow.  But quickly I realized, “Oh no!  It's the Rainbow.  The sign of a promise.”   I understood more about the story of Noah.  I also understood and do believe that the promise is not to a group but to each one of us.  That's me, too.

That message has been spoken to me a number of times.  The year 1980 was an especially troubled year.  I would start each day with prayer and meditation to establish balance and affirm “God's Presence” in my life.

I went outside to sit in the misty dawn, having reviewed my life at that time and wanted to be grateful.  Before going out I had to pray, “Please help me to find something to be grateful for.”

Sitting out on the swing I noticed a Rainbow, and then another and another.  Writing this some 29 years later, brings tears to my eyes.

*  *  *

We moderators struggled together to come up with “just the right” name and decor for this room.  There was much writing back-and-forth.  I had been reading a book wherein the author mentioned something about the journey through life is like a rainbow.  Whaalaa!  The name would have the word, “Rainbow” in it.  Then there was the hunt for an image.  Many were found with accompanying inspiring thoughts.

The whole process was an inspiration and growth experience.

And so torchholder, your gift for this room is especially appreciated and appropriately placed for all to see:

The Story of the Rainbow, based on an Indian legend
