POLLING stations have opened in parts of cyclone-hit Burma, as the military regime asks voters to approve a new constitution just one week after tens of thousands of people died in the storm.

The military delayed the vote for two weeks in the areas hardest-hit by Cyclone Nargis, including in the main city and former capital of Rangoon.

But the ruling generals pushed ahead with the referendum in other parts of the country, with polling stations in some places open by 6.15am local time (9.45am AEST).

The referendum is the first vote in Burma since 1990, when detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi led her National League to Democracy (NLD) to a landslide victory in elections, a result the junta has never recognised.

The regime says the constitution will clear the way for democratic elections in two years, but the NLD says it will entrench military rule and has urged voters to reject the charter.

The junta has ignored the NLD's calls to delay the balloting and focus instead on helping the 1.5 million people still in desperate need of aid in the wake of the cyclone.

Talk about have to have before they can do…

You are so spot on…it is a bit out of sequence
under the circumstances.

We are doing everything in our power from my sector
and have teams manned up on the border ready to
go in and help.  We have funds going in.  It is like
pushing through a failed help zone for me.  I have to
know and keep pushing, those with foreign aid WILL
get in.  This is my intention and I feel you guys on Gaia.

I have a lot of attention on this and will report in tomorrow night
with more news.

Thank you Sandy for being on top of this.  I get chills
reading your threads.  Blessings and strength to you.

Thanks Nicole -we do need to see the World in a new way ,
to have
compassion and care for all other's and their plights.
It is so sad that so many lost their lives in China -especially
the children -it is even sadder that in Burma they are STILL waiting
for help to arrive -though it has slowly begun.
I am sorry that I have “plagued” boards and pods- flooding them ,
I suppose -but such is my passion to have hope for help.
That someone here WILL try and even be able to contribute help
in a bigger way -by being more powerful or knowing those more powerful.
There is a little good news from here ,which means that we are trying
at least -I am so scared these people will be forgotten.
They say an entire generation of children could be wiped out -
that saddens me beyond belief.

Aussie relief plane lands in Burma

More than a week after Cyclone Nargis hit Burma, Australia has finally managed to fly 31 tonnes of emergency supplies into the cyclone-ravaged nation.

The delay is due to Burma's ruling military junta's continued rejection of international assistance, which prompted Prime Minister Kevin Rudd to label the repressive regime “callous”.

Sandy, each of us as Ambassadors is doing things as best they can; your flood of messages is better than a flood of pain ,and shows your persevering concern.

What I am doing on Gaia, is to inform those who ask me, about the different pods that are discussing these disasters; so that each person can decide which way resonates with them. When I think I 'm alone, there can be a feeling of despair; but when I realize that there are so many voices, there is such a feeling of hope.

I am also on your global Peace pod,  to lend my support; so I read your messages there; and sometimes, just seeing your name on a pod signals to people that you are updating or requesting people to respond. So  you have a clear message. I wanted to assure you of that, as you may feel alone sometimes, and hope people are reading. Many read and don't write. That does not mean they are not involved. I have come to understand this.

I try to be on each group as the culture of that group is; so that I don't make mistakes like claiming too many countries as I did on yours [!!] ; or writing off-track or not responding when someone wrote. After all, we'd like to be read when we write…as we need to read what others write and convey.

So my new way of seeing the Gaia world is to be not only a speaker [writer]  but also a listener [reader]. I learn so much more that way.

And this would be a wonderful topic on the Gaia Networking group. Definitely as we are on Gaia, we are in the larger world around us.

..Ummm…now did I go off-track here? apologies!

May 17th: Global Day of Action for Burma :
Calling for a Critical Response to Burma's Humanitarian Disaster

Dear Friends,

On Saturday, May 17, 2008, a Global Day of Action for a critical response to the Burmese humanitarian disaster will take place in cities around the world. We urge you to help make this a day to urge world governments to take action now and save countless lives. Will you hold  a fundraiser, demonstrations, or vigil on this day? We are calling on the US, UK, France and other key nations to use whatever assets and means they have to deliver aid to those suffering Burma, even without the approval of the military regime. Many leaders in Europe have already stood up and called for action to force aid in if necessary.

Sign up to hold an event here

No Meenakshi -you did not go off track! I am hoping some of our members will attend or hold an event?

We put out a Call To Arms from our Volunteer Ministers from around the world and are sending anyone to Myanmar and China immediately.

Contact the Volunteer Ministers International Office at 1-800-435-7498 (within the U.S.) or 1-323-960-1949 (outside of the U.S.).

If you are unable to go yourself, your help is needed to sponsor another Volunteer Minister who can go.

This is u-r-g-e-n-t and we must act now. Please pass this message on to your friends.

I can't go but anyone that needs the assistance e mail me here and I will arrange a Skype call. I will be happy to talk to anyone and keep calm and stable.  I got two businesses to donate and sponsor someone else.

We do have some volunteers there and will be needing more which is why I posted this.  It is non denominational.  All of us are doing something and I feel we are helping shoulder to shoulder.

Light~

We know the death toll is rising ,that the number of dead is being played down
by some media sources ,that there may even be another cyclone in the area,
that the children are being exploited by traffickers -that the empahsis is on
China's disaster where they ARE being saved and care provided -
yet no-one has got Air DROPS IN to BURMA yet!!! This is in-humane ..

PUSH FOR UN SUMMIT ON BURMA -Britain has called for an emergency
