Good thing it was caught! It's great if stuff is distributed online free with the author's consent, but pirated movies are a big problem.

I just watched this documentary online, and it was incredibly moving, and I think of interest to almost all zaadsters. I hope you'll try watching it and spread the news of it around.

I'm blown away, even tho I already knew most of this, and am not easy to blow away. ;-}

DELIVERABLES list for films

I hope everyone is enjoying their weekend! Just to remind what the emphasis we put on DELIVERABLES. Deliverables are the items you need to 'deliver' to a distributor or sales agent so they can sell or distribute your film properly. They are also what filmmakers tend to think about LAST, or not at all. Not having the right deliverables is highly detrimental to getting distribution for your film! Due to the critical nature of this, I've compiled a list of what I consider to be the most common deliverables....so you can get an idea of the things you'll need to get together, and hopefully not get caught off guard. Here they are: 1. DIGIBETA MASTER or BETACAM SP w certified QC (quality control) report from your lab 2. (20) SLIDES (in slide format or on disc) 3. PUBLICITY 4. SYNOPSIS 5. MUSIC CUE SHEET 6. DIALOGUE SCRIPT 7. BONUS MATERIALS 8. TRAILER 9. CHAIN OF TITLE VERIFICATION (ie: Copyright) 10. ERRORS AND OMISSIONS insurance certificate 11. M&E tracks The bottom line is that distribution and sales agency contracts will vary from company to company, so this list will vary too, but at least it's a start. If anyone out there has had to deliver other items NOT on this list please let us know so I can post it all here for those interested in film. (remember, AFM 'American Film Market' is coming up in Santa Monica!). Anybody out there want to know about U.S theatrical distribution for their films?? GETTING READY FOR CANNES FILM FESTIVAL

Maybe because Cannes Film Festival is coming up and several
filmmakers are getting their films ready to go sell there -
I've been speaking with lots of producers lately about the
deals they've made with various sales agencies.

So I thought I'd share a few pointers with you all - things
to look out for and be aware of.

First of all, when a sales agent agrees to bring your film
to the Cannes Film Festival market, you are not IN the Cannes
Film Festival. You are at the Market. Big difference!

Also, when a sales agent brings your film to the Cannes Market
you do NOT have distribution...you have a sales agent. The
job of the sales agent is to find you distribution deals -
they sell your distribution rights to various distributors
around the world and take a commission for their efforts.

In addition to your negotiated commission with them (usually
somewhere between 10% and 25%), they will want to take a fee
for marketing expenses (can be anywhere from $5K to $50K).

Now here's where things get tricky -- for example, if the
sales agents are out there selling your film to distributors,
and they get to keep the first $50K of sales that come in to
cover their marketing expenses, and then start taking a 25%
commission on all the sales after that, when do you think
you'll actually get paid? Can you say...NEVER?

OK, I'm being cynical -- anyway, it will take a long, long
time unless your film starts making hundreds of thousands of
dollars in revenue right off the bat...which I would never
plan on because you want to play things conservatively.

One solution to this little conundrum is to negotiate with
the sales agent that they are allowed NO MONEY in marketing
expenses - tell them you want to negotiate with them just a
percentage commission that they'll take off the top of every
sale...and no more.

Stick to your guns and if they really want your film, they'll
concede. After all, why should you be responsible for their
overhead costs?

It's something that always got under my skin when I was working
as a sales agent -- taking all these huge fees from filmmakers
to pay our marketing expenses....it just doesn't seem fair.

That is why, I think ultimately, the sales agency is a dying
business model.

My two cents for the day (distribution cents!) -- if you have

Let's hope this is a good book then -it is frightening to imagine the
power of reading material.

That's why I think we should produce our own zaadz book-
see thread re zaadz type "bible".

Too many people have their very existance manipulated by books/media
some even live in a world of fiction.

Was Michael Jackson on the right track after all with his THRILLER?
The ghouls or the walking dead as sometime called are not fiction.
Perhaps more like little pre-programmed robots -but we all know
people who are easily influenced and controlled,especially by fear
when they cannot believe in their own heart or intuition!
