Om Amriteswaryai Namaha

                            Amma's New Year Message

January 01, 2009
Amritapuri, India

People gathered from all over the world to spend the New Year in Amritapuri. Amma was giving darshan and when midnight struck, she immediately led everyone in several minutes of chanting the world peace prayer : Om lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu - 'May all beings in the world be happy."

Then came Amma's New Year's address. "The year 2009 is taking birth in the midst of many different challenges," Amma began. "On this occasion, there are so many nascent problems upon which we need to deeply contemplate." Amma went on to mention the economic crisis, war, global warming, terrorism, increase of mental problems, the neglecting of the elderly and the deterioration of families.

"In fact, the most serious problem facing the world today is the pollution of the human mind and the increase in selfishness and cruelty." Amma said. "This is the root of all the others problems facing the world today. Everything in the world is changing-with one exception: our negative mental state! Our personality is a reflection of our mind. The ability of human beings to rise up to a situation and act is slowly disappearing. In the name of stability and competition, mankind is allowing their lives to be led by hatred, revenge and stubbornness."

Amma further stressed the importance of acting with awareness and discrimination to mitigate the problems in the world today. She lamented the fact that human beings are losing their ability to stand up and face challenges. It is only through spirituality, Amma said, that we can develop the strength that will empower us to face all the challenges life brings our way.

"In life, things rarely happen according to our expectations. This is why it is very important to develop the attitude of surrender to God. This will also help us to live in the present moment. If we learn to live in the present moment, we will be able to cheerfully accept any circumstance we may have to face in life.

"Only the present moment is in our hands. So, we must live in it joyfully, with alertness. It is said that the lifespan of a butterfly is only a few days to a week. Yet how joyously it flies around! It spreads delight and happiness to everyone. Our lives should become like this."

"We should make sure that the flame of compassion in our hearts doesn't become extinguished."

"Only a person who has known hunger will understand the pangs of hunger in another person. Only a person who has carried a heavy load will understand the strain of carrying heavy weights. If each of us really wanted to, we could make a big difference in the world. The benefit of all the good actions that we perform with a selfless attitude will definitely come back to us."

"We should develop a mind devoid of egoism-a mind that doesn't fall apart in failure, a mind that finds joy in giving and accepts adversity with love. Such a mind will never experience sorrow."

Amma concluded with a prayer: "May all our thoughts, words and actions benefit both others as well as ourselves. On this New Year's Day, let us pray that our lives become like incense sticks, spreading a beautiful fragrance to the lives of one and all."

Amma then led everyone in two bhajans-"Mata Rani" and "Kushiyonki." The latter was an ecstatic celebration of life, the former a compassionate prayer-attitudes to cultivate in 2009.

                                            In Love and light

to me the ego is simply what it says - the I, or the self... i think the difficulty isn't having an ego, because it's good to have a self :) but the relationship we have with who we are.

it is important to know who you are - Know Thyself - and to know what you want - Lao Tzu

“At the center of your being you have the answer; you know who you are and you know what you want.”

But it's what you do with that. Do you run around pushing everyone else out of the way so you can have what you want? or do you love and appreciate and serve all in humility? Very different outcomes.

light and peace,

nicole

Everyone should be able to eat to his or her fill, at
least for one day. There should be at least one day when hospitals see
no one admitted due to violence. By doing selfless service for at
least one day, everyone--from little children to the very
elderly--should help raise money for the poor and needy... even if by
making toys. It is Amma's prayer that at least this small dream be
realised."

"Amma still sees dark clouds enveloping the world. Only the cool
breeze of sincere and innocent prayers can lift these clouds and turn
them into a shower of Divine Grace."

OM LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU
LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU
LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU

OM SHANTI SHANTI SHANTI

OM SRI GURUBHYO NAMAH
HARI OM

********************

Various prayer options suggested by group members:

* to chant Aum Amriteswaryai Namah (a mala or as many or as
few as is comfortable)

*to chant your own mantra, given by Amma, or some other mantra you
feel especially drawn to

* to chant the Gayatri mantra:
om bhur bhuvah svah
tat savitur varenyam
bhargo devasya dhimahi
dhiyo yo nah prachodayat

* to chant the 108 Names of Amma

* to chant the Lalita Sahasranama

* to chant the Mahamrtunjaya Mantra:
om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivarddhanam
urruvarukamiva bandhanan mrtyor mukshi ymamrtat

* to chant Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu (at least three times, or a
mala)

* to pray in any other way that suits you

Some devotees may feel moved to intensify their prayers, when a strong
need is felt, by observing a vow such as fasting or silence for part
or all of a day. It is said that this conserves and builds spiritual
energy. Please do what feels right and is feasible for your
particular situation.

Namaste to All! :)

My birth name is Darrell, and my spiritual name as given by Amma is
Advait.

I found Amma's face on the cover of a book in a commercial bookstore
(Books-a-million) and the book just happened to be in the
Entertainment section which was a strange misplacement, and meant to
be. As soon as I saw her face I felt a spiritual connection and for
two years felt this connection before finally meeting her in the
physical form and receiving her darshan in Detroit, Michigan in 2003
(I think, it was the one in Ann Arbor). I even had an Amma doll long
before meeting her. So when I first met her I received my mantra on
that retreat, realizing that I was recognizing her as my Guru and the
full impact of such.

My most special retreat with Amma was in New Mexico the first year it
was held in Albuquerque instead of Santa Fe. I received my spiritual
name there and had some beautiful experiences.

I have attended four retreats with Amma only, and unfortuantely have
missed the past three years because I live in Tennessee in the
southern US and Mother's programs are always at least 400 or more
miles away. I feel my connection to her strongly, and have always
felt drawn to Amritapuri.

My hope is to one day visit Amritapuri and stay for a few months,
when I was younger since the age of 12 I always said I wished to be a
monk and saw myself wearing orange or white which was surprising when
I learned that Amma's devotees wear white.

I have shared my own slightly more detailed personal story of Amma on the In Her Embrace board.

Aum Amriteshwaryai namah

Householders and Spiritual Life

"A bird sits on the dry twig of a tree and eats a piece of fruit it has found somewhere. It knows that the twig may break at any moment; so it is very alert as it sits on the twig. You should understand that this world is like that. Everything may be lost at any moment. You should remember that, children. Be sure to hold on to the truth that only God is everlasting. Then there will be no reason for sorrow."

~

"They have to stand in fire without getting burnt -- that is the life of a householder. Without shoes, they have to walk over thorns without getting wounded -- shoes being freedom from worldly ties. The householders don't have that freedom."

~

"Family life is not meant to take us away from God, but to bring us closer to Him. Use it for that purpose, children, without worrying unnecessarily."

~

"If sadhana (spiritual practices) is done regularly, the spiritual and worldly aspects of life can be maintained side by side, in perfect harmony. To achieve this, you have to perform your actions with the awareness that the goal of life is to attain liberation. This will save you."

~

"It is a great thing to be able to call out to God in the midst of all the family prarabdha (results of past karmas manifesting in this life). Many of Amma's householder children meditate and do japa and archana regularly at home. Many of them have taken a vow that they will not eat or sleep before doing archana. Amma's heart overflows with love when She thinks of them."

~

"Real gain is from the Self alone. Only enquiry into the Self is of eternal value, and that is what gives peace. We should know That as the true bliss. What happiness is there in worrying about the family? You should move forward considering everything as ordained by Him. If one does so, peace will be gained."

~

Spiritual Practices for Householders

"My children, slowly try to change your life. Out of 30 days in a month, at least spend two days for your spiritual development. Try to change your bad habits by gradually replacing them with good thoughts and actions. Every day before going to bed, recollect the day's activities and try to discriminate between the good and bad. Repent on the bad thoughts and actions. Make a strong determination to abstain from them the following day. The next day, do the same. Before going to bed, make a comparative study of the actions which you did that day and the previous day and see the differences. Pray to the Lord to bestow enough mental strength to fight against the negative tendencies. Surrender everything at His feet. Have compassion for ailing humanity. Do charity for righteous purposes. Real charity or renunciation is giving up your dearest things. Actually, it is said that the mind should be offered to the Supreme. But the mind is immersed in money and other such worldly possessions. So offering money for righteous things is equal to offering our mind. Such actions will make your mind more and more expansive. Expansiveness is God. Let not your wealth be used only for fulfilling your desires and those of your family members. Let at least a small portion of it be used for the benefit of the world, which in turn will purify you."

~

"Householders should observe a vow of silence once a week. They should try to get up early in the morning. It is good if they have a regular routine. That will help them to discipline themselves. Until yesterday you were leading a life devoid of spiritual ideals. To get rid of the old habits and replace them with new ones, a regular timetable will be very helpful."

~

"If once a week is not practical, at least two days a month should be spent in an ashram atmosphere, immersed in japa and meditation and doing service. Remembering God is the real foundation of life. In due course we can free ourselves from all bonds, just as a snake sheds its skin; and merge in God."

~

"Any spare time you have after work should be spent reading spiritual books like the ‘Gita' and the ‘Ramayana,' or the biographies of the mahatmas (great souls), or collections of their teachings, instead of going to the movies or engaging in other forms of ordinary entertainment. Don't waste any opportunity to participate in satsangs. Share with your friends the things you hear in satsangs, thus bringing mental peace to them as well. Observe brahmacharya (celibacy) at least two or three days a week. That is essential if you are to get the proper benefit from your sadhana (spiritual practices). There is not just one wife/husband -- the eyes, nose, tongue, ears, and the skin are all our "wives/husbands." We have to control our attachment to them also; then we can know the real essence within us."

~

"In the morning, chant the holy name for at least ten minutes after your bath. Meditate at least for a little while. Do the same in the evening."

~

"One cannot live without being active in some way, whether physically, mentally, or intellectually. Everyone is constantly engaged in some form of action; this is an unchangeable law of Nature. No one becomes pure and selfless overnight; it involves time and concentrated effort coupled with tremendous patience and love. Do your actions in the world, without forgetting that your final goal in life is to break out of all bondage and limitations. Always remember that you have a higher goal to attain. Simply do what needs to be done; but at the same time, don't miss the opportunities you come across to perform unselfish actions. You will then gradually gain mental purity and devotion. As you proceed with diligence, you will attain more clarity of mind and a deeper understanding. This will finally lead you to the state of perfection, the state of Self-realization."

~

Why Spirituality?

Amma says, "The real purpose of life is to experience what is beyond this physical existence. However, each one looks at life differently. Most human beings see life as a constant struggle for survival. Such people believe in the theory, "The fittest will survive". They are satisfied with the normal way of living- for example, getting a house, a job, a car, a wife, a husband, children and enough money to live. Yes, these are important things, and we need to focus on our day-to-day lives and to take care of our responsibilities and obligations, small and big.

But there is more to life, a higher purpose, which is to know and realize who we are. By knowing who we are, we gain everything. A feeling of complete fullness, with absolutely nothing else to gain in life. That realization makes life perfect. Regardless of all we have accumulated or are striving to acquire, for most people life still feels incomplete - like the letter "C". This gap, or lack, will always be there. Only spiritual knowledge and realization of Self can fill the gap and unite the two ends, which will make it like the letter, "O". The knowledge of "That" alone will help us feel well-grounded in the real center of life.

Spirituality is not blind faith; it is the ideal that eliminates darkness. It is the principle that teaches us to face any adverse circumstance or obstacle with a smile. Spirituality is the teaching for the mind."

Someone asked Amma, "Why should one follow the spiritual path?"

Amma replied, "This is like the seed asking, "Why should I go beneath the soil, sprout and grow upward?"

Excerpted from the book "From Amma's Heart"

Let us pray together, "O Paramatman, let there be no wars, violence or natural disasters this year. Let there be no death due to starvation or lack of medical care. Let there be no children who are unable to continue their studies due to poverty. Let the music of peace and harmony be heard everywhere." - Amma

      Ways of Praying

Let us join Amma's prayers:

"Everyone in the world should be able to sleep without fear, at least for one night. Everyone should be able to eat to his or her fill, at least for one day. There should be at least one day when hospitals see no one admitted due to violence. By doing selfless service for at least one day, everyone--from little children to the very elderly--should help raise money for the poor and needy... even if by making toys. It is Amma's prayer that at least this small dream be realised."

"Amma still sees dark clouds enveloping the world. Only the cool breeze of sincere and innocent prayers can lift these clouds and turn them into a shower of Divine Grace."

OM LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU
LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU
LOKAH SAMASTAH SUKHINO BHAVANTU

OM SHANTI SHANTI SHANTI

OM SRI GURUBHYO NAMAH
HARI OM

********************

Various prayer options:

* to chant Aum Amriteswaryai Namah (a mala or as many or as
few as is comfortable)

*to chant your own mantra, given by Amma, or some other mantra you feel especially drawn to

* to chant the Gayatri mantra:
om bhur bhuvah svah
tat savitur varenyam
bhargo devasya dhimahi
dhiyo yo nah prachodayat

* to chant the 108 Names of Amma

* to chant the Lalita Sahasranama

* to chant the Mahamrtunjaya Mantra:
om tryambakam yajamahe sugandhim pushtivarddhanam
urruvarukamiva bandhanan mrtyor mukshi ymamrtat

* to chant Lokah Samastah Sukhino Bhavantu (at least three times, or a mala)

* to pray in any other way that suits you

Some devotees may feel moved to intensify their prayers, when a strong need is felt, by observing a vow such as fasting or silence for part or all of a day. It is said that this conserves and builds spiritual energy. Please do what feels right and is feasible for your particular situation.

My Personal Story with Amma

My experience with Amma started in a perhaps low key, but reflecting back a synchronous way. I saw her face in the picture of a biography of her Amma Healing the Heart of the World by Judith Cornell, it was in the most unlikelikelist of places the Entertainment section of Books-A-Million, a major chain bookstore. Someone must have placed it there but it was no doubt meant to be there, as I spotted it I immediately felt a connection with the woman on the cover who I would learn about.

After learning about Amma, I began studying her on the Internet on her website and reading about her. I had been studying spiritual books since I was 12, and often envisioned myself wearing a white outfit which seems to be the one that Amma's devotees wear. I started with Neo-Paganism around 12 or 13, then moved to Buddhism and Mysticism. Before finding Amma I had already developed a very open mystic view of spirituality, believing Unconditional Love to be Truth. After finding Amma it was as if all the beliefs I had already developed in my early spiritual journey had come together in her, as her teachings were already what I believed.

I had been to New Mexico before, several times to Thaos with my parents, we loved that area, and had heard in Thaos at the Hannuman temple I had visited the summer of 2003 that Amma comes through New Mexico and I was not aware of that and she had been in Santa Fe just 2 weeks before. I was sad to know I had just missed her, so made strong plans to see her where else able. I discovered also that one of her first places to visit in the United States was Taos, re-affirming my belief that is a spiritual place for the US as well as other parts of New Mexico. And I later discovered her ashram was in Santa Fe.

I felt a strong spiritual connection with Amma through the last years of High School, and until I met her I want to say in the fall of 2003 when she came to Ann Arbor, Michigan. I felt her presence with me in my home, and around me before meeting her. I even obtained one of the Amma dolls available on her website even before meeting her, how close I felt to her.

I had convinced my mom to take me to see her all the way from TN Ann Arbor and we also made it a small family trip, and it was an amazing experience. Even though it fell around Thanksgiving it still worked out as we did not have any specific plans that year.

Upon seeing Amma for the first time sitting in the hall I felt as if I zoomed in upon her energetically, and it I just remember thinking "IT'S THE SAME PRESENCE! IT'S THE SAME PRESENCE!" as I had been feeling before I even met her. It was as if I had already known her, and it dawned on me what an amazing spiritual being beyond just a teacher she must be to be able to have extended herself to me in such a way. She must be one with the Divine.

It seemed as if she was familiar with me in the retreat as I hugged her, just the feeling was amazing and I felt spiritually transformed. I was very surprised by how approachable, and friendly the swamis (her disciples) seemed to be, I had spoke briefly to Swamini the female Swami that is her personal attendant and close disciple.

I received my mantra at this retreat, which was special to me. I had also asked Amma if I should come to India, and she said finish school first (As I was just finishing High School at the time I suppose that is what she meant) The most memorable experience was at the end of that first retreat when I had touched Amma on the back, and after doing so I felt electricity going through me like a current.

The second retreat I went to see her in the summer of 2003 and the experience was much more closer and amazing. It was in Albequerque New Mexico. From the moment she arrived I had contact with her. I waited in the hotel lobby on a hunch that maybe she would come through, and waited there for 2 hours to see her. A small crowd began to gather sensing something was to happen to, and the car pulled up. Amma stepped out, and walked into the lobby and stopped to give us all hugs. And it was very personal and sweet.

I asked her at this retreat should I come to the ashram, and she said it was my choice.

During the retreat, I got very special hugs, and on the second night decided to get my spiritual name. I did not make it into the name line that morning, so decided to try through the regular line as one of the swamis had told me. When I went through the regular line, I told Amma I wanted a name, and she put me directly behind her translator only 2 feet from her. I sat there for almost an hour and ahalf, at one point she had pointed at me with her finger and said something, the other translator had tried to catch it and had a funny look on his face but did not catch it. I asked him later and he forgot what it was. Toward the end of the line as Amma was finishing hugging people, I tapped the translator on the back and said "Is Amma going to give me a name". She turned and told Amma and Amma laughed loudly, tapped one of the swamis on the head. He gestured to me to sit next to Amma's chair where the question and name line was, and I sat there. Amma said something to him and he gave Amma the paper, and he wrote on the paper what my spiritual name was, and then she handed it directly to me. I thought this was special. It was Advait. He told me, and explained to me it meant "one who is beyond duality". Then for some reason I just sat there, as I believe the line was finishing. I looked off to the right side and spaced out and was preparing to move. Suddenly out of the blue the swami is tapping me on the shoulder, and I turn and he says "Amma is calling your name" and she is turned in her seat and saying my spiritual name aloud I believe 3 times. I was not sure what to do as I still suddenly felt high for a moment, and bowed low respectfully as there were many others around. Amma smiled, and went back to hugging. I sat there until she completed hugging, and got up and went with the crowds. One of the devotees who travels with the group sometimes and lives in India excitedly told me "I have been waiting for Mother to say my spiritual name for 2 years! That is very special" I felt like this devotee is living better than I am, and is closer to Mother physically more often and told her "Well you travel with her, and Amma has something different for everyone"

Later on the swami who instructed me on my name came directly to me as if sent by Mother and said "What is your spiritual name" I said "Advait" mispronouncing it and he corrected me, then walked away.

Another individual thing that happened on the retreat which was more cute. At the end of Mother hugging people, everyone forms corridor which she will walk through to leave the hall. I did not realize that those who did not receive a hug were to stand on one side to receive a blessed prasad, in this case a Hershey's kiss, and those who did stand on the other side. Well I had stood unknowingly one night on the side of those who did not receive a hug even though I had received one. Amma came down the line, and when she came to me she skipped right over my hand. This showed she reall remembered, out of hundreds of people. Well on the next night I stood on the opposite side. Amma came down the line handing out the prasad, Hershey's kisses, and upon reaching where I stood she turned all the way around and directly handed me a prasad smiling hugely. Then she proceeded on to hand a prasad to one other devotee on my side, who I had been speaking to earlier and who said it seems Amma always hands her a prasad. I said that must be for some reason too!

Devi Bhava night was rushed as always, but I remember it felt very special and I felt energized.

The third retreat with Amma I went to see her in Deerborn Michigan in 2005 I felt was beautiful. but it was not as amazing as the second retreat. What was amazing was some of the devotees I met, and how I felt throughout the retreat. I felt as if I was receiving Amma at more of a distance.

That was unfortunately and sadly my last retreat with Amma so far, I have not been able to see her since then because I live in Tennessee and most of the retreats are at least 10+ hours away when she toured the United States and I was without transportation for much of this year. I kept wishing I had figured out a way to go but it seemed like something would prevent me like a financial need or something.

I keep feeling drawn to go to her ashram, Amritapuri India, but I have not yet been able to go.
