Om Sri Ram Jai Ram Jai Jai Ram
SALUTATIONS to Lord Rama, an Incarnation of Lord Vishnu, who
is measureless, who is of the nature of pure Consciousness and bliss, who is
the consort of Sita, Master of Sri Hanuman, and the Lord of the three worlds,
who took His birth at His own will in order to establish righteousness, destroy
the wicked and protect His devotees.
Ramnavami or the birthday of Lord Rama falls on the 9th day
of the bright fortnight of the month of Chaitra (March-April). By: SRI SWAMI

Sri Rama is also a wish-fulfilling tree. He will bestow upon you whatever you want! Just read what Lord Shiva further says: “The seat of all good things, the destroyer of all impurities of this age of darkness, purer than purity itself, the food for the journey of aspirants on the path to salvation, their only resting place, the very life-breath of virtuous men, is the Divine Name of Sri Rama. So say the sages”. - By: SRI SWAMI SIVANANDA

Valmiki, the author of the original Ramayana text was a contemporary to Rama. This has been explicitly stated in the text itself. This story was not penned a few hundred years after the life of Rama. In fact, Valmiki was the guardian to the wife and sons of Rama.

This one fact gives it the credibility of being an authentic historical account. If you look at various historical text world over we find the authors have written about stories which happened few hundred or even few thousand years prior to their times. In such historical texts, the authenticity and the exactness of the material can be questioned.

The texts Ramayana and Mahabharatha were classified as Itihasa meaning “It thus happened”.

In 1813, Mr.James Mill & Mr. Charles Grant from Helebary College, wrote History of India and classified most of the literature of India as Mythological.

Rama was the Lord Hari Himself, incarnate on earth for the destruction of Ravana. He was well accomplished, beautiful and endowed with royal marks. His glory and prowess were unlimited. He was peerless on earth. He was free from malice. He was gentle. He was the protector of all His people. He always addressed them in gentle words. He never used any harsh words even when somebody provoked Him. He held sway over the whole world. - By: SRI SWAMI SIVANANDA

Do thou therefore worship Lord Rama who is Vishnu and the consort of Sita who is Lakshmi. Abandon all foolishness and enmity. Take to the service of Lord Rama. - By: SRI SWAMI SIVANANDA

Many Hindus consider Lord Rama and his wife Sita Devi to be incarnations of the Divine in personal form, the God and Goddess that together constitute the Supreme. In my blog post yesterday – based  on a reflection that I shared at Princeton University's Diwali celebration a few days ago – I described how the Ramayana is largely the story of reuniting Rama and Sita.

And that is precisely why the end of the Ramayana is so difficult to swallow.

Diwali celebrates the part of the story where Rama defeats Ravana, rescues his beloved Sita, and returns to rule over Ayodhya. Basically, the rest of the story goes like this: One day, years after Rama and Sita are happily living in Ayodhya, Rama hears a washerman doubting Sita's faithfulness to Rama during her captivity in Lanka. Ostensibly to uphold dharma at any personal cost, Rama banishes Sita from the kingdom.

Say what? After pining for her, practically going mad missing her, and waging a war to free her, Rama sends Sita away? Why would Rama, glorified as the very personification of righteousness, behave so apparently cruelly and unreasonably?

Sanmugan,

I doubt you take these things seriously. I am the Lord Rama, and I have been reunited with my Sita in this lifetime. I also spent years at the feet of sage Vasishtha, and met with the animal-human Hanuman, who “tore open his chest” to reveal myself and my beloved as the center of it all.

You already don't believe me, but that is all I can expect from a dualistic mind, born in original sin, which begins each thought with “I possess.” You think, “Where is the crowd?” for this is the only standard which you know for spiritual authority.

But I chose to answer your question, about why the Ramayana might end with Rama banishing Sita. This was done because Sita is not an ordinary woman, having enough spiritual power that the demigods worship her as “Divine Mother.” She can therefore be seen as independent from Rama, or as His feminine part, the female half of the Incarnation. Sent out from Rama, she proves Her virtue and authority.

You probably think it is unusual because you expect the woman to be subservient to the man, attached to him and under his domination. In this you are probably not prepared to offer full homage to Sita as Divine Mother, despite your pretty language, that seems to be quotations from scripture.
