Archetypes and Spiritual Development
One goal of this Pod is to ask yourself this: What is the role of the archetypes and archetype like symbols and their integration into the Self in spiritual development?  Then, you or someone can provide the answer on this Pod.

I’ve had some education in, and used Jungian theory in my therapy practice.  Zaadz seems like

Archetypes are "Psychological DNA"

Awakened said Nov 11, 2007, 8:05 AM:

Just as our physical attributes are carried in our biological DNA, so too are the archetypes carried in psychological DNA, and perhaps to some extent, biologically.

…archetypes are the matrix paterns that we can hang our essence on for this drama…

…do you think archetypes are universal or are there different ones for each universe?…

Can you say more about what a Matrix pattern is and how hanging our essence on it.

By definition, archetypes are universal.  I'm not sure what you mean by “each universe.”

Thanks

I too am curious as to what the matrix patterns are in the context of archetypes.  As for the idea of psychological DNA, it seems to be a quite accurate term for the phenomenon of universal archetypes.   It seems this idea of psychological DNA can be applied to dreams as well, and the many common themes that humanity as a whole share through dreams. How might psychological DNA fit into the context of a collective subconcious?  Just as a side note are you familiar with the work of Joseph Campbell?

Hey Cory,

Thanks for you post!  By referencing dreams you are tuning into a central feature of great import to Carl Jung in his theory of the archetypes.  Note that “Psychological DNA” is in quotes in the title of this blog.  That's because DNA, of course, is biological, and archetypes are psychological.  Hence “DNA” is a metaphor/analogy.   As the host post on this thread indicates, archetypes “reside” in the collective unconscious.  Oh yes, Joseph Campbell is a very famous Jungian theorist.

These comments are all in tune with my ideas about archetypes.  I too suspect they are in our DNA.  I've found that certain specific archetypes occur over and over again, throughout Western literature and myth, for the past 4000 years - always the same, always in the same order.  The Western Canon offers us these six archetypes as ways of understanding spiritual growth, and out of which all the other sub-archetypes seem to grow. They are immensely helpful life guidance tools, as a result.

I could add more detail but I'll pause there and see if anyone's going to respond.

Peace,

Allan
