The Bardic Circle

For countless ages, bards, performance artists, shamans, priests and the media have been using the power of self-expression and imagination to heal the tribe, to hold captive and to inspire freedom and fulfilment. Poetry exercises

The Daily Poetry in Motion contest at the site below gives you a pile of words from which you can only select a maximum of 20 pieces to write a short poem - it's like a magnetic poetry kit but  free and you can win prizes.

I find this really good for learning to set a mood or scene in a few words, and also for finding inspiration for longer poems or short stories. Give it a try! Good for those writer's block days…

Here's mine from today:

You stood your ground
pretty in red velvet
all roses and fists
and threw thorns
at my apology.

Very nice! :)

Another interesting poetry exercises, used and taught by the Nobel laureate Ted Hughes, is to pick to random words and list ten words for each (I usually list only five). Then you go writing down associations between one word of the first list and each of the words of the second list. In the end you'll have a LONG list of insights and associations. Use the images to write your poems! Very interesting, try that! You'll surprise yourself with your poetic eyes and ears for the world!
