Memory

Awen's GONE [no longer around] said Sep 20, 2006, 5:45 AM:

It's been said that songs are the soundtrack to our lives.

A 21-year-old friend of mine recorded for me a CD with songs she labelled as 'cool retro music'. In the CD, Bon Jovi and their 'I'll Be There for You' are currently playing on repeat. One of the songs that made a huge part of my teens are called retro these days.

I've been spending some time now reminiscing on the songs and bands that were part of my teens. Oasis, Spice Girls, the Brazilian bands, and the big part they played in shaping my character, getting me through the bad times, teaching me to value the good times when they're there and listen. Listening is the greatest lesson music can teach us, especially when we listen to the music in our memory.

What's the music (songs) in your memory? What songs tell your story?

You are so right. Who doesn't remember exactly where they were when they heard a song and it really rang true?

I really like listening to new music and new bands, but sometimes the nostalgia trip is great, too.

For example, I remember my mom LOVED this Billy Joel song, My Life. She loved, ” They will tell you, you can't sleep alone in a strange place/ Then they'll tell you, you can't sleep with somebody else….”  And she loved, ” I don't need you to worry for me cause I'm alright.” I remember the bridge we were crossing when we laughed over this song and how great it was.
That was 1980. My senior year of high school. Hehe!

1980? That's when I graduated from Non-physical to Physical life!

Your songs may be known as “retro,” but mine are called “classic!” Ha! At least they aren't “antique” (yet!)

It sounds silly but Green Day's “Time of Your Life” specifically because it played on the season finale of Seinfeld.

See told you it was silly.

But there is some merit to this. That really marked an era. We were transitioning from a period of record-breaking financial prosperity in the country and worldwide peace into an era of terrorism and poverty. I get meloncholy when I hear that song sometimes because it brings me back to a better atmosphere.

That aside, as we march into this perilous future we cannot hold onto whimsical and romantic notions of yesteryear. Instead we have to grip the present with passion.

Now I'll never listen to that song the same way again. Thanks for that wonderful gift, my friend. :)
