Witness Against Torture, a member group of UFPJ, has been a leading force in the efforts to shut down the detention center at GuantÃ¡namo. Now they are organizing what promises to be an important day of protest on Friday, January 11, 2008. More information about the plans for activities in Washington, DC, that day -- as well as what you can do locally -- are included in the message below.

CALL TO ACTION

We declare January 11, 2008, six years after the first prisoners arrived at Guantanamo, an International Day of Action to Shut Down GuantÃ¡namo. In Washington, DC, we will hold a permitted demonstration at the National Mall followed by an orange jumpsuit procession to the Supreme Court. There will also be solidarity demonstrations in Chicago, Miami, London and Paris, with more being added every day. We invite you to come to Washington and participate, or else join or plan an action in your own community. We also encourage people around the world to wear orange t-shirts, armbands or other orange clothing on January 11th to mark the date.

The day involves several elements:

Demonstration at the National Mall. Witness Against Torture has teamed up with Amnesty International and the National Religious Campaign Against Torture to hold a permitted demonstration on the National Mall at 11:00am. (Gather at 12th street NW between Madison Dr NW & Jefferson Drive SW - near the Smithsonian Metro Stop.)

"Prisoners of GuantÃ¡namo March." Hundreds marched in last year's procession
A provocative street theater performance involving people wearing orange jump suits and black hoods. We will march from the National Mall to the Supreme Court in an orderly silent procession hauntingly evoking the moral disgrace that is GuantÃ¡namo. With your help, we will form a prisoner contingent including as many protesters as there are prisoners.

Funeral Ceremony at the Supreme Court. Following the procession to the Supreme Court, we will hold a Funeral Ceremony to remember the four men who died in custody at GuantÃ¡namo and to mourn the death of Habeas Corpus. Like last year, some may choose to risk arrest. To participate, please consider attending an orientation meeting on Thursday, 4pm, at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Church (1525 Newton Street, NW) or come early to the National Mall for an orientation and rehearsal at 10:00am. Please let us know in advance if you are willing to participate in either the Prisoners Contingent, Nonviolent Direct Action, or both. Friday 21 September is Peace One Day

I am having several Meditations for Peace on Friday in Miami Beach. Here's the schedule:::

11 am Lincoln Road Circle (Where Euclid Ave dead-ends into Lincoln Road).

3 pm In Flamingo Park, meeting point::: Michigan Ave & 12 th Street... with parking nearby. Hopefully this will be under a nice, large shade tree. It *may* include a brief walking meditation, as well.

7 pm In Flamingo Park (same details as above)

Each meditation will be approximately 30 minutes to an hour, depending upon the weather and the groups input.

-->Feel free to bring your favorite blanket and/ or meditation cushion (zafu). These are outdoors, so sunscreen and comfortable clothing may be needed due to the hot sun. I hope you can stay for the entire meditation, but it is understandable & OK if that doesn't work for you. =)

I invite everybody to participate, even if you may not be there physically.

Huntington Beach is a state beach located close to 405 and Pacific Coast Hwy. It is a great location...wonderful beach (look at the pic above!) with plenty of waveZ, gentle breeZe and loving sun.

Here are some of the activities that will be taking place at the beach party:
- BEACH SPORTS (VOLLEYBALL, FRISBEE, RUNNING, MORE IDEAS?)
- MEDITATION (this is an awesome place to go Zen!)
- EATING (let's do all vegetarian food) - there is a grill - bring some food to share
- TRUST WALK / RUN (yup....learn to trust your fellow Zaadster in a fun game!)
- DANCING ON THE BEACH (there will be all kindZ of music...promise! OK, maybe no country;)
- BEACH CLEANUP (voluntary, of course! There might be a prize for most effort, though!)

Bring some food and snacks for yourself and something little to share. I will personally bake something special to share. Bring a towel, change of clothes (there are bathrooms and outside showers), beach chair, SUNSCREEN, WATER...shark-repellent?! We will start around noon and be there until whenever.

I would agree with the last two ratings, but it seems like I am not in synch with the rest of the world concerning this movie.

I wonder if it's too painful for too many ears to hear the message? I wonder if we can still go to thought provoking movies and not need a "Bruce Willis scaling a burning building" kind of theatrics.

I love Dan Brown for putting this wisdom out to the world as fiction. Let us search and decide what we believe (although, I have no problem believing that there are many many lies and secrets that the Vactican holds -- and yes, my family is catholic as well). I felt like at least Dan, Ron, and Tom believed that we had the capacity to search within ourselves and to delve into our collective unconscious about the myths that people have killed over for centuries.

I love that Ron Howard took this project on and wanted to show Dan's vision.

I love Tom Hanks for stepping out and being someone who most could not see him be.
I loved walking away and having a intellectual conversation after a movie instead of just enjoying the soundtrack, the leading man, or the scenery.

I believe we should question everything and use our intuition, observations, and lived knowledge to find the answers that we hold as our Truths.

If nothing else, I hope that people will at least use their capacity to think, to hear, and to search after this movie.

Sorry, I am breaking the rules. I will not spend my money to see the movie after reading the book. Cannot support Brown and his Code any further. Two main reasons:

1. If Mary M. is an apostle, and I see no reason to believe she was not, Brown has done nothing but sexualize her by making her a wife and mother. What other apostle's marriage and parrenthood is ever discussed. I have read much of the Gonstic Gospels and remember no memtion of Mary in these roles - what scholarship is Brown using to build his theory? The same baseless ones Mary has been subjected to for 2000 years?

2. Brown has named a major character Sophie. Was this done by accident or intent? Sophia (Wisdon) is the only feminine name given to God in the Old Testament. I am a follow of Sophia, the Mother, and hope this choice of names was not a gimmick to gain readership.

Posting what to where and linking what to....??? Sorry C, this is the best I can do. ;-)

Well, I have not read the book, but I wish I had prior to seeing the movie. I knew what the gist of it was, however the accents were heavy and I really had to pay close attention to what it was the actors were saying.

Using the English alphabet on the case that contains the map? Come on.. this movie is all about symbols! That drove me crazy. And there is still vinegar in the case after all of these years?

It became a little too predictable. The albino was a good addition to the movie. I give that a @@@. They did a great job conveying his depth of faith and loyalty.

Good story line, enjoyed the scenery. Lots of scenes at The Louvre, which was pretty cool.

I give it a @@ 1/2 rating overall.

Just reading the book prior to the movie, made it a little more difficult to be objective. The complexity and inter-relationship of all the historical references were hard to tranfer to screen. How they handled the flashbacks was absolutely, cinemagraphically beautiful.

I would have to give it overall 2 1/2 @@. I'll give it 5 @@@@@ for promotion and 5 @@@@@, for just addressing organized religion and it's origin.
