Hi Merykk! I know I am late to reply, but just joined yesterday. I hope I can still help you. A number of years ago, I was looking at re-incorporating a company I then owned, and strongly considered non-profit status. Ultimately, I chose against going that direction for a number of reasons. There is a book that I found especially helpful in making a more informed decision, written by an attorney. It is "Starting & Building a Nonprofit: a Practical Guide" by Peri H. Pakroo, J. D. published by NOLO. Good luck with your decision!

I've been talking and thinking about starting a nonprofit organization for about 6 months now, and the legal/business aspect is just so daunting that I haven't gone anywhere with it. It started when I began a gift basket program for moms who have recently added a child to the family, and it spawned an idea for creating a comprehensive support network for moms. It's something that's desperately needed, at least in my region, and having experienced postpartum depression myself, I know the benefits of having support.

How do you get everything together to actually register the business and get started?

      Hi Biz Women,

I have been in business, in some form, corporate or my own, for many years. I appreciate this space to connect with others. We are coming into a time of collaborative collective work. I have no doubts. And we, as women, have the innate potential to open those new ways of working.

After many years in hi tech sales and marketing, management consulting, teaching high school French, working in Europe (Amsterdam and Paris), I landed here in Massachusetts after being downsized for the 3rd time. And so it was time to do something on my own. have never made the leap entirely. I have been a contract trainer doing cross-cultural training for the last 10 years. So another more established and larger firm finds the corporate clients and I am part of the training team. Still no certain income or benefits or retirement, but lots of freedom. Sprinkled in I do some business consulting, college teaching (have an MBA) and other creative endeavors.

In 2006 I finished an MA in Conscious Evolution and wrote a thesis on collective intelligence. So now my work is taking a turn into collective work with women, learning how to explore, discover, and move the edge of what it means to be conscious women working in the world. How can we learn to be change makers at the edge, whatever that is for whoever we are. We each walk a unique path. We can come together and explore this collectively as we birth the new.

I have collaborated with Ria Baeck in Belgium. We first brought together Women Moving the Edge in Belgium in March. The next will be Women Moving Edge 2 in Western Massachusetts in late October, 2007. If you want to know more, please ask.

Much more could be said. Enough for here and now. Look forward to collaborative conversations.

Wow, what a great opportunity! I began thinking of environmental sites like Charlene stated, but also thought about a few political organizations that are educators on tolerance -- the Southern Poverty Law Center's "Teaching Tolerance" booklets being one example. Also, HRC/Human Rights Campaign's statements like "working for GLBT equal rights" might be what you are looking for. I'll keep looking!

      Layne,

Off the top of my head I don't have a name, but I recall reading that some of the environmental organizations have done this and have had success. Perhaps doing a search on a couple of the big ones like Nature Conservancy, Sierra Club, etc. may bring forth some information.

I the name(s) come to me I will get back to you with the information. Your idea is correct, change the wording, change the mindset and the outcome will be greater.

I'm looking for some advice from all of you. I have got an opportunity to introduce a large group of social work leaders to the concept of rephrasing all of their policies and procedures (and hopefully focus and intent) from an anti approach to a pro approach ie: from an anti-oppression framework to a pro-fairness framework. Or from anti-war to pro-peace, from anti-racism to pro-equality.

I'm looking for examples of groups or organizations that stopped fighting against what they didn't want - and chose to work towards what they did want and met with success. Can you help me?

I buy more time by delegating effectively. I have the most amazing team of people working with me. When a project comes up that I think will be a good stretch or fit to an individual I give them some coaching initially (this takes a bit longer than doing it yourself) I then let them run with it and support them where neccessary.

You won't beleive how much time this saves in the long run! Also the side effect of letting people run with a strech project, with some support has some fabulous side effects...
Give them the credit for doing the whole thing (even the bits you contributed or helped them with) - this builds people's confidence and credibility in a corporate environment.
The ideas they contribute are usually better or more interesting than yours because they tend to be fresher or come from a different perspective.
The work gets done well by someone who can focus on the specific project as opposed to me trying to do 50 different things at once.

I get a chance to focus on projects that are interesting and satisfying to me and I get a chance to do my absolute best thing in the world .... help people to become the best they can be.

B

Changing my viewpoint (about 3 years ago) to expect the very best out of life, was the beginning of countless amazing opportunities for myself and my company. One day - about 6 months ago now - an idea came to me on how I might spur hundreds of thousands of women to observe the effect of their negative/positive thoughts for themselves and with that the concept of Positive Womyn began. I've now officially launched the campaign and I've got a quick synopsis below. If you think it a good idea - please help us spread the word. Much thanks, Layne.

PS - I'd love to get your feedback.

Today, we officially launched the 21 Day Be Positive Womyn Challenge (http://www.positivewomyn.com/) and we're asking for your help to spread the word.

The campaign in a nut-shell: The idea is to purchase a fair-trade beaded bracelet ($7) and practice using only positive language for 21 consecutive days. All profits go to the Stephen Lewis Foundation (Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign) - helping women who test positive for HIV-Aids. Not only will the campaign raise funds for a remarkable organization it will likely change your life in ways you can hardly imagine.

The 21-Day Be Positive Womyn Challenge will be successful because you spread the word. We want this program to be a grassroots effort, not a slick campaign that pushes the idea through traditional marketing efforts. We know that women will do what women do best. They will test the idea, be convinced of its merit and figure out ways to spread the word. You could e-mail a link to your friends and co-workers, talk about the challenge at the gym or a social gathering or even start a positive womyn club and work together to complete the challenge.

Visit the site http://www.positivewomyn.com/ and if you believe it's a good idea and you'd like to show your support cut and paste the above information with the link, add a personal comment if you'd like and send it off to all the women you know.

Thanks for your participation!

      Hi Beth!

I began my business back in 2004 and it literally was an idea that came to me rather suddenly. When I did have the thought, I sat down with my sister and a good friend to pass everything by them and see what they thought.

The very next week, I launched a website, registered my business and began bidding on projects on Elance.com. It was a quick process and I was very driven to get it up and to have it become a success rather quickly.

I can't say exactly what it was that was behind that driving force except that I was really, really passionate about the idea and I just wanted to be doing it full-time. Earning an income from what I absolutely loved to do.

I was 21 when I started my business and I think that having strong people around me with business savviness was key for me.

Good luck!

Erin Blaskie
Business Services, ETC
http://www.bsetc.ca
info@bsetc.ca

Giving Business Owners Freedom by Managing the BS, etc.

As a virtual assistant, I come across many great business resources... I wanted to share those with you here so that you can benefit too!

1ShoppingCart (aka Marketer’s Choice, Easy Web Automation, etc.)
1Shopping Cart (and their line of similar products) is the ultimate shopping cart, autoresponder service, broadcast manager, affiliate manager and ad tracker built into one. It’s a wonderful tool and 95% of my clients use this service to run their businesses. From the 6-figure businesses to the 7-figure and over businesses.

Constant Contact
Constant Contact is a great service that provides list building services and newsletter (electronic) services. They are a perfect alternative when all you need is a list building tool and you want something that is really user friendly. You don’t need much technical experience to use this service.

Aweber
Aweber is a service that is much like Constant Contact except it does require a bit of technical experience to use.

MyHours.com
MyHours is the software I use each and every day to keep track of the work I am doing for my clients. You can also use it to track how much time you spend on things like website design, your product creations, etc.

Wordpress
You’ll never hear me say that I recommend a blogging service more than Wordpress. It’s my favorite blogging platform for so many reasons (I won’t even try to list them out!)

Feed Demon
Feed Demon is my most favorite blog reader. You do need to purchase it but it’s absolutely perfect for organizing your blog feeds. The things I enjoy most about it is that you can view full posts as well as just summaries of the posts and if you choose to click through, you can automatically pull up the website and navigate to other sites. It has a built in browser feature which makes navigation easy.

Audio Acrobat
Audio Acrobat is the ultimate audio tool. You can record all sorts of audio files and then provide fast and easy download and/or e-mail links to your listeners. You can also use it to put media players on your website or do pod casts. It’s the be all and end all when it comes to audio.

Shopping Cart Training
I’ve recently been told that they may be shutting this site down but until they do, I’m leaving it up here. They have great resources for learning all about 1ShoppingCart.

Stock.xchng Photos
Stock.xchng is where I get every single photo that I use for my blog or my website (and for ebook covers, etc.) Most of the images are free and they do have a great selection. They also have premium photos that you can purchase if you feel inclined to do so.

Format Text Tool for Broadcasts, etc.
Formatting text to insert into 1ShoppingCart or other similar services can be difficult if you are looking to have all of your lines reach no more than a set number of characters (generally 60 characters per line). This tool does all of that for you!

TinyURL
Want to use an affiliate link but you want to disguise it? Want to shorten a really long URL? Tiny URL does both of those things.

Pando
Share large files amongst your colleagues, family or friends. Great service!

Icebrrg
Need to create simple web forms? Try this service out. I use it all of the time!

Sincerely,

Erin Lamarche-Blaskie

erin.blaskie@bsetc.ca

Business Services, ETC

http://www.bsetc.ca

Giving Business Owners Freedom by Managing the BS, etc.
