This article from the business section of yesterday's New York Times really captured my imagination. Titled "It Takes Deep Pockets to Fight Global Warming," it made the case that the most promising large-scale, tech-driven global warming solutions are "unfundable" by venture capitalists because they only "invest in projects that will be commercially viable in three to five years." Two such global warming strategies that stand out in the article are:

Carbon sequestration - sucking carbon out of the atmosphere and land-filling it underground. The tech already exists -- carbon captured from the atmosphere is pumped into dwindling oil wells to drive out additional oil.

Geoengineering - "shooting particles into the atmosphere to reflect sunlight back into space, creating what is called the parasol effect."

These technological solutions are viewed as promising because they side-step the problem that makes global warming so intractable -- people and governments are loathe to act collectively to abate carbon emissions. Yet the problem with sweeping, all-at-once strategies like carbon sequestration and geoengineerging is that they are mind-bogglingly expensive and will only bear results in decades.

The article basically offers no great hope that these strategies will end up as a serious R&D agenda anytime soon -- they're too expensive and long-term for conventional venture capital and even though the US government has a large research budget, they do not invest the billions of dollars that would be necessary in any one project.

The question that occurred to me is why not use the Kiva/Prosper lending model to form a venture capital collective to finance research into the big global warming solutions? Global warming is an issue with legs -- people all over the world are looking for a way to contribute to a solution within their financial means. Internet lending platforms distribute risk (making a short to medium term return less pressing), but allow the many to tangibly buy in to promising collective solutions.

The point wouldn't be to raise all the money to fund serious carbon sequestration or geoengineering research, but to help set the international R&D agenda. An international non-profit VC collective could put together enough money to attract conventional VC and government partners for the big projects they are otherwise unwilling to fund.

Maybe Big Al himself could be the ambassador that lends the idea of private voluntary venture capital credibility -- hell, he already heads up a venture capital firm focused on global warming.

Anyway, after a full pot of Sunday morning coffee, this seemed to me like the best idea ever. What say ye?

We're involved with an organization that fills this bill nicely.

We all know the numbers about how many start-ups fail within the first two years. The two most common causes for failure are:

Undercapitalization and Improper Sequencing

IBI/CEO Space teaches the rules(laws) regarding raising capital and proper sequencing. It also attracts all the marketing, sales, management and coaching experience any entrepreneur needs in order to succeed in business.

The thing we like most about IBI/CEO Space is that they are huge champions of cooperative/collborative business.

You can check them out at www.ibiglobal.com

What you are talking about is a wonderful idea. I can see that there is definitely no stop on my part. I located money, invested money, and lost money. Right now, I am looking for something that can improve my dynamics around me, not just for myself, but for family and friends.

I personally have lots of ideas about things that can make money, but I seem to get stumped when I don't know where to go with them or I do not know who I can trust. Maybe some of you can help me with this.

L. Ron Hubbard once said that money flows toward points which attract pro-survival attention.

If one is in fear, he sure isn't being very pro-survival. But I can tell you, what you said to that gentleman at that meeting was very courageous and I will support a guy like that any day.

Good story.

I believe that we all invest in confidence. The only thing I have ever spent money on, I to some degree believed in it.

The title sure caught my attention. I love that idea. Could be like Revival Sessions for the floundering...I say this as an "idea" person, I'm sure many here are, I get so many ideas, but where to go, how to begin, when to begin? Sounds like the Uber Team could solve that...

I am wondering where I can find information on international non-profits operating in the united states? Border relations between the United States and Mexico? Im not looking for anything in particular but I would like to know accounting standards and US legalities for foreign businesses, also the legal process for church fundraising and business ventures? Any help or nudge in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.
thanks a lot
hugs and love

When I began casting in 1989 I decided I was a casting director whether I had cast a movie or commercial or not. I put on that beingness and kept it on. I got business cards and rented a small (very small) office for $400 a month. The first job I landed was Fresh Start (that was my que that putting out some beingness and a few phone calls did the trick. 3 weeks later I landed my first paid movie.

Definition of beingness: The result of having assumed an identity.

This works well as you go along with a certainty of accomplishing what you say you're going to accomplish. and if you just make a practice of doing what you say you're going to do, you will be in wonderful condition.

When I decided to produce my first film and accomplish that product I put in a bid and got my first film within weeks. When I put out my first business plan a man appeared at my new studio and gave 5 samples - very cool. I love to help and be helped and have found it to be pure joy.

Now I have been learning about distribution for film. I have discovered those are the people that control film monies and I am creating luck selling my works for more future income.

Thanks for listening...
Kathy

Money itself is neutral; it’s just little pieces of paper or plastic. The true culprit—the source of our money issues—is what money represents in our minds".

Prosperity Thinking Vs. Poverty Thinking

There are two phrases that are fundamental to learning how to change our attitudes, beliefs, expectations and goals with money:
1. Prosperity Thinking
2. Poverty Thinking

Prosperity Thinking is a trusting attitude that things will work out. Prosperity Thinking means aligning your beliefs, attitudes, expectations and goals toward realistic levels of abundance, optimism, and self-confidence. It increases financial and personal self-esteem and success. Prosperity Thinking is not necessarily about being rich— it’s more about being confident, optimistic and comfortable with our ability to generate and manage money.

In contrast, Poverty Thinking is a limited state of thinking rooted in fear and mistrust. It closes down possibilities and opportunities and frequently leaves us feeling that things will not work out. It is characterized by discomfort, worry and a more passive relationship with money. It diminishes our financial and personal self-esteem and our confidence about earning, handling and nurturing money. Poverty Thinking is not necessarily about being financially deprived—there are plenty of wealthy people who are “miserly” or who worry constantly about losing their money.

The things we dialogue with ourselves about throughout the day--thoughts, daydreams, fantasies and feelings--and even the dreams we have at night either represent Prosperity Thinking, Poverty Thinking or a combination of both. In 1982, Dr. Gottfurcht developed The Psychology of Money Profile to measure 10 psychological money skills and exercises to help enhance people’s financial success. For every skill, people fall into one of three categories: Prosperity Thinking, Poverty Thinking or a combination of both.

One of the skills is Planning which is based upon what we call “psychological financial planning”:
- Organizing your most important beliefs, passions and values into an evolving vision of your desired lifestyle.
- Designing a congruent and feedback-based set of action steps leading from your starting point to vision fulfillment.”

The Five Key Phrases Are:

1. Evolving Vision is a process that develops over time in which you have a vivid and definable set of ideas of what you want to accomplish.
2. Desired Lifestyle means you have the personal and financial freedom to truly enjoy and be satisfied with your life quality.
3. Designing is when you proactively create, organize and arrange the ideas and methods to fulfill your vision.
4. Congruent means your action steps are consistent and true to yourself.
5. Feedback-Based is when you change your behavior and/or vision depending upon what you learn from

To learn how Dr. Gottfurcht used The Psychology of Money Profile to help a certified financial planner to succeed with a client, read Laura's Case.

Prosperity Thinking Cannot Overcome Everything

We are all influenced by the Prosperity and Poverty Thinking messages others send as well as by the messages we send ourselves. When these messages are realistically aligned with Prosperity Thinking, we have a much greater likelihood of creating successful results. We say realistically aligned because our beliefs and feelings cannot overcome certain physical limitations. For example, when Dr. Gottfurcht was a teenager (before he developed more realistic expectations), he had a fantasy to box Mohammed Ali for the heavyweight championship. Despite all the Prosperity Thinking that Dr. Gottfurcht could have mustered, he never would have defeated Ali. Ali was truly a superior physical specimen and was professionally trained and highly experienced. And in this corner, the challenger had never even participated in a boxing match. Ali was an incredible Prosperity Thinker, too. He made the saying, “I am the greatest,” famous around the world. So even if Dr. Gottfurcht had been successful at “psyching” himself into a prosperous state of mind about defeating Ali, he knew Ali was one of the best Prosperity Thinkers of all time. With these realizations, Dr. Gottfurcht quickly surrendered his boxing fantasy. Moral of story: Choose goals that are realistic and then apply your Prosperity Thinking to attain them.

Poverty Thinking Can Sabotage Success In Powerful Ways

We know a woman who borrowed her husband’s new Cadillac to do some errands. The car had four expensive white wall tires. Her husband had just gotten one of the tires replaced for several hundred dollars. He warned his wife, “Don’t damage the tire.” He looked her in the eye and said, “Don’t hurt that tire!” The wife was a nervous wreck driving around town in heavy traffic all day. She finally arrived at home with the car in pristine condition. Then, all of a sudden, a loud noise rang out. She hit a pipe protruding several inches from the house. The right front tire popped like a balloon hitting a sewing needle. She created the perfect scenario to puncture the right front tire which her husband had warned her about while the rest of the car remained untouched. What he didn’t realize is that the subconscious mind usually ignores negative messages such as “don’t.” By telling her “Don’t damage the tire,” he had inadvertently programmed her to damage the tire. And she obliged, in spades!

Prosperity Thinking Can Manifest Almost Everything Else

We all have heard of inspiring stories of heroes who have overcome incredible adversity in order to succeed. Sports history is filled with them. How about the 1980 U.S. hockey team, “The Miracle on Ice,” that upset the Russian team for a Gold medal? Or Lance Armstrong’s long journey back from cancer to win the 2,290 mile Tour de France seven times—an all-time record?

Some of you may be familiar with the story of a struggling comedian and actor whose parents had been laid off their jobs. Things became so tough financially that his family stayed together by living out of their van while they all took jobs as janitors. This man had unstoppable Prosperity Thinking. Eventually, he took the risk and came to Hollywood to try to make it as an actor. He kept rehearsing his material, facial expressions, gestures, and overall delivery. He would drive up to the top of Mulholland Drive late at night to practice. He pretended the city lights below were his audience. He continued practicing until he felt his delivery was just right. He even imagined great applause afterwards. Sometimes, he wouldn’t leave until three or four in the morning. He committed one more daring act of Prosperity Thinking. He wrote himself a check for 10 million dollars for acting services rendered and dated it several years into the future. Despite many adversities, he sustained his Prosperity Thinking. He devoted so much time and energy to becoming a successful actor that he actually achieved a couple of box office successes. Finally as the date was approaching on the 10 million dollar check he wrote to himself, he actually signed a 20 million dollar contract for his next movie! As you may recall, Jim Carrey is the man who manifested this incredible self-fulfilling prophecy.

Being Aware Of Your Prosperity And Poverty Thinking In Real Time

Have you ever noticed that when you felt upset or angry with someone, you cut yourself while you were shaving, swallowed water down the wrong pipe, or got into a car accident? Most people think the cause is distraction. We have discovered, that in addition to

Introductory CD

The best introduction to Psychology of Money’s proprietary work.

(About one hour)

Get More Info

distraction, mishaps occur when people are having negative or stressful thoughts or feelings. Those are examples of a Poverty Thinking self-fulfilling prophecy. In reverse, have you observed when you are in a groove or zone of self-confidence, how natural and effortless it is to perform well and how rarely you will have an accident? This is an example of a Prosperity Thinking self-fulfilling prophecy. Remember, at every moment, whether you are self-aware or not, you are programming yourself toward prosperous or impoverished outcomes.

Overcoming Poverty Thinking

The next time you catch yourself in a Poverty Thinking dialogue, identify it as such. Realize its detrimental effects, and make an effort to reframe your thinking or feeling onto a prosperous aspect of the situation. For example, if you are dwelling on a mistake you made, try to find something favorable from it. Perhaps the mistake taught you a valuable lesson or prevented you from making a more serious mistake. Focus on appreciating the benefits produced by the mistake. We know a woman who inherited one hundred thousand dollars from her mother. Shortly thereafter, she received a cold call from an out of state sales rep who strongly recommended a biotech stock. It was in final clinical trials for a cure for the common cold. She was so taken with the story and afraid to ask questions that she invested all of her money in it. The clinical trials failed, and the company went bankrupt!

Rather than focusing on her financial storm, she found a silver lining (i.e. Prosperity Thinking) in the clouds. She became motivated to learn from and overcome her setback. She decided to find a coach. She was taught how to “investigate before you invest.” This meant doing thorough research and due diligence. Next, she saw a certified financial planner who taught her how to understand risk tolerance, diversification and asset allocation. Her efforts paid off a year later when she inherited two million dollars after losing her father. This time, because she had refocused away from Poverty Thinking and redirected her energy to Prosperity Thinking, she knew how to invest the money.

Feel free to e-mail us with any questions or comments at psychmoney@aol.com.

We will answer one e-mail question in each Newsletter.
My goal is to make all of the tools that the Internet has to offer available for a very low fee.

Right now I have made available all of the basics (website, email, storefront, online office tools and more) for $10 a month.

If you take advantage of the Launch Special you would pay about $4.16 a month.

There is more information on my blog.

The first two members are Happiness & yosyama....
Thanks to you both,

DD

Wearing baggy pants doesn’t make you a skater, wearing spandex doesn’t make you a cyclist, looking at the world through Oakley shades doesn’t make you a snowboarder, saying, ‘dude’ doesn’t make you a surfer and—in business—printing ‘leader’ on your card doesn’t make you lead. Real leaders take us to places we've never been, turn nothing into something, transform good into great, help us grow as human beings and change the pieces of the world that they touch for the better. Real leaders are, in other words, Extreme Leaders. This site will help you make the choice to be one of them. So spend some time, poke around, and when inspiration strikes, chime in on the blog below...

Check out Steve Farber's site @ return false">

Last month I had the great pleasure of speaking to the franchise partners of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? in Vancouver. But I wasn't just a keynote speaker, I was a customer-to-be.

It just so happens that I'm a man with a lot of junk, who has a family with a lot of junk and, therefore, a garage whose insides haven't seen the likes of a car in a long, long time.

So this week, after a robust junk--er--garage sale, I booked a time with the local GOT-JUNK? folks to have them come and haul away anything that hadn't been sold or couldn't be donated.

The "Truck Team" (their company language) that showed up--Mike and Jason--proved something that I (and others, certainly) have been saying for a long time: if you want your customers to love doing business with your company, make sure you and your employees love the company first.

And that's exactly what I saw in Mike and Jason. Maybe they'd rather have a more glam job like, I dunno, co-CEOs of a Fortune 50 multinational conglomerate with a company jet--hell, who wouldn't? But I have to say, they certainly didn't act like they'd rather be doing anything else but hauling my stuff and--brace yourself--cleaning up afterward.

These guys love their company, and they're proud of it. I'm not projecting here; I'm not putting words in their mouths. I know this because they told me. They told me with great admiration, for example, the story of how founder, Brian Scudamore, got the idea for the business while waiting in the drive-through at McDonalds. He was an 18 year old college student who started with one truck, they said, and now "he's a billionaire or something."

Then they told me about their recycling process because they want to help care for the environment, and their donation process to help take care of their community.

And, bottom line, they didn't just de-junk my home; they gave me space--real, live garage space for our cars. A garage with cars in it! It's almost disorienting. But they also gave me something I didn't contract for:

Inspiration and awe that comes from witnessing an "un-inspiring" job done with heart and soul.

Pride. Love.

Ingredients of their great Junk business.

Don't even try to tell me it's not possible in yours.

technorati tags : 1-800-GOT-JUNK? leadership customer service brian scudamore

Posted by steve on 04.04.2007 | Comments (0)

Not Skate Board, Not Surf

Hi All: There is such a complete revolution going on in this whole matter of the relation of a company to its customers and clients, that it is worth paying attention to. The Cluetrain Manifesto is a good place to start: www.cluetrain.com And I would also recommend Michael Hewitt-Gleeson's WOMBAT SELLING (Word of Mouth, Buy and Tell) which is available from www.newsellcoaching.com (and maybe now through Amazon). These are powerful new tends that we all need to be aware of. H.

      Hi Diamond,

I think the idea could work, depending on the primary motivating factor involved in the mind of the donor. If the donor were aligned via the heart center to the mission of the NFP and was concerned primarily with making a difference, regardless of how far and wide the donor's role in that difference-making would be publicized to stakeholders of the donor, then the model works. If the primary purpose for corporate giving is quid-pro-quo publicity (such as for companies who want to be the "official" sponsor of an activity for large NFPs) then your model might not interest them as much unless your NFP would, by virtue of what you do for them, gain publicity in a broad arena.

Perhaps another thing to study or find out is with each of the potential donor organizations, do they have budgets established for a variety of NFP giving? Perhaps they fund many organizations at the micro-level, while others fund one or two at major levels. I suppose the overall philosophy of giving in each organization could influence your success rate.

Ed

      Hi Paul,

Beautifully and powerfully stated!

Metaphorically, I imagined myself with two options after reading what you wrote. I could stand on the bank of a stream and peer around the bend to try and observe where it led, or I could float down the stream and experience where it led. The first option would give me some kind of limited observational data to which I could use my prior experience to offer predictions. The second option would provide me with actual data to which my prior experience might be insightful, but not as necessary.

Thanks for sharing this!

Ed

      Thanks Diamond!

This is wonderful material that, for me, clarifies many things.

Here's a question; is advertising a function of marketing or PR or sales for that matter?

In the world of online advertising I know the focus is usually on placing a banner or link or contextually relevant article in places where the company thinks people interested in the product or service might find it.

Another strategy I've used--with success--is to align my product with someone else's brand--which I believe is at least tangentially a part of affinity marketing.

Then, one hears about Light House marketing, which I'm less clear about.

Finally, celebrity endorsement, which always sounds like the goldmine, but I'm always wondering how you come up with enough cash to get them involved--and if that is even ethical, like, if they think what you've got is so wonderful, and they really don't need the money, can you get them to play for free? And, should you even bother.

Finally, finally lol . . .I hear so much today about the level of cynicism in younger people vis-a-vis ANY marketing message--and especially the kind where a company tries to send the message that "we're just like you" when they clearly are NOT in the world of these younger folks.

Any thoughts on all of these ramblings?

Ed

[Transforming the "Capital" in Capitalism ~ Change The System] From Susmita: About Conscious Capital
Dear Friends

Thanks so much for joining the CC pod. This week I am going to present my educational talk on CC (see zaadz events) at BCTC, and have a lot to catch up on. I am not sure how many of you have downloaded my paper or have a chance to peruse it. It just touches on some basic questions, we need to reflect on. For many it may be shocking at first to know some of problems concerning monopolized private creation of money as debt on the basis of fractional reserve and exponential interest (Usury) and so many dysfunctions in our economy and society locally and globally arising just out of that. If money or currency itself is issued and circulated on a clean (debt-free) and fair basis, we really can create an entirely different human society and relational experience where no child need to die of hunger or social apathy/injustice and everyone gets a positive start-up nurturing environment to fulfill their highest potential….

So please do not hesitate to express whatever you feel about it…our doubt, worry, anxiety, guilt and fear needs safe non-violent expression along with our good intentions, sublime visions and hopes…because we are facing a four-five thousand year paradigm of power/ control, victimization, confusion and jumbled mixed-up values/perceptions here. As Brian says in latest WIE interview “it takes shit to make a seed grow.”

I am opening a thread/board on what Conscious Capitalism means to you?

[And do post your reflections on some issues raised in my paper ( which was written sporadically and almost entirely online]

Like to begin by posting Siona's thought in Zaadz Thinktank pod as a starter….please post a few lines of your own vision, so we all feel energized and inspired to create the unimaginable at this point….hold a shared vision that is nested wihin a collage of a greater reality that we are trying to birth here…much like the metamorphosis from a caterpillar to a beautiful butterfly! It would take great courage, great love and fearlessness which we naturally are as we become authentic and true to ourselves and our calling. Here I am totally in alignment with Brian and Z-team.

Thanks for your participation and mindful contribution. Stay inspired. Don't let reality discourage you. Power to create reality is within each of us. We are just begining to realize that. Sometimes that is scary and unsettling. What if a community like Zaadz could create its own currency to fund everything it needed to grow? Now that is not a distant possibility…at least in my imagination now…..

I better leave now.
Cheers ;)
