Underground Comics

Tired of mainstream comics? Want something refreshing, new, revolutionary, something that makes you think? Well I am sure someone here (I included) showed know something! Mainstream comics are ok but I really do enjoy other comics that have more substance for the most part. But I do not discriminate any other comic books. Most have positive and negatives!

Comic Interests

Tru said Aug 11, 2006, 6:26 PM:

What are some focuses of everyone's comic creations?

Which or what kind of business models are of interest to you?

And how do you feel us 'next wave' comic creators can develop interest and more exposure over traditional means?

I want to create a comic that is both beautiful but has a great story but on top of that I want it to express my views of life, politics, and love etc. And THEN on top of all that I want it to have a twist :D (will not talk further on that :P)

What is a business model?

Im not sure about all other comic artists but I dont want to make the mundain, or the cool hip ones that are about death and killing and drugs, I dont want to make something that dulls the mind and pleases the stomach. I want to stimulate, and educate! I want to make something revolutionary in the way we think or something to help people along the right path who read my comics….

Neko, you can find documented information on the term business model here [answers.com] and here [wikipedia]. It should help out with its meaning. Of course, the meaning I was implying has to do with the way in which a comic artist generates income.

Nice answer to the questions, Neko. I believe many of us are after simular accomplishments with our work. Awaiting the chance to read your masterminded “twists”. :)

I, too, strongly desire to approach and develop something very different than the usual shoot 'em - kill 'em - pervert 'em - one line 'em stuff thats so pervasive these days. It gets a bit tiring. Although, admittedly, I've found various comic works that defy those traditional commonalities.

And its good to address specific issues facing our world through comics. Definitely, it will be unique to draw greater pragmatic thinking ability from comics. Mental stimulation is by far one of my aims too. Hopefully all of us will pitch in to advance this revolution.

It helps when artist ban together and create community solutions that strengthen and advance needed changes to challenging the traditional avenues of comic publishing and promoting. What do you think?

Well said, both of you - I’m a huge fan of Chris Ware and some others that really expand the boundries beyond the Dan Clowes brand of misery. Julie Doucet? Some others - but it all comes down to good writing - characters and visual style. A newer and more intimate style of story-telling.

As for the business model? Seems like distribution is key. Maybe that’s a way to crack the next level of comic artists in a collective (an idea I love!).

Keep up the good work!

And to add to Quinton's wonderful assessment of good comic benefits and keys, these days one may secure a chance to see there work as a movie production. So I'd think there are new opportunies coming available for comic cartoonists.
