Cook it. Go.

The corporatizing of food and water supplies is driving prices of basic necessities through the roof. Whatever! I want to do something about it!

Here's what on my list:

Hit the farmers markets and see what's out there cheap.
Learn about canning (again).
Figure out how to grow my own herbs while living in the middle...(more)

What's in the Freezer?

Grower [no longer around] said Nov 24, 2006, 7:24 AM:

Today's Food List

These are the things I can think of that are in my freezer and that I like to keep around for cooking:

Frozen Meats – pork loin, bison (ground, steaks), shrimp (peeled and unpeeled), chicken breasts
Salmon Steaks
Sausages – chorizo, andouille, etc. (individually wrapped from multi-pack into waxed paper rolls)
Brown Rice
Tortillas – corn and flour
Chopped Bell Peppers
Grated Ginger – freeze tablespoon dollops and bag up
Chopped Chilis
Pita Bread
Soups – I freeze 3/4 of each batch I make and can get three two-serving bags out of it
Jams
Nori
Curry Pastes
Tomato Paste – freeze tablespoon dollops bag up
Lemon and Lime Juice – frozen cubes: a cell in my ice cube tray is two tablespoons

As you can see, some of these things are ingredients I might have to buy a large amount to get the small bit I need for a recipe so I just portion and freeze the rest.  In the past I've been tempted to get another freezer. When I was a kid that made sense for our family of five when we needed a place to store the bounty of the garden, pastures and chicken coop for the winter. Now it doesn't make that much sense to someone with no family and no garden. I guess I'm just deeply ingrained with the tradition of “putting up food”

Hey Grower,

In the spirit of this post, I’ll share what’s in my freezer:

chopped up fruit for smoothies
ice cream
ice cubes
a spanish sauce of onions, red peppers, paprika, a dash of turmeric, reduced white wine, and saffron
black beans

Whenever the chips are up, I make a huge batch of Cuban black beans and freeze them. Then if the chips are down, I always have plenty of food to get me through.

Our lists are similar:

Frozen meats - seperated into “our” serving sizes - both cooked and uncooked (I love to put a whole pork loin in the slow cooker - cube some for later use in dishes, shred some for later use on sandwiches, etc. where I just have to add the “extras”).

“My” tortillas - I'm picky about tortillas so I make many then freeze some.

Various chopped vegetables.

Couple kinds of soups - chicken - without the noodles; hmmm, what else is up there now - asparagus soup maybe and a cheddar-tomato soup base just waiting for the cheddar.

Frozen tomato sauces - pizza type, pasta type, juicy salsa type.

Frozen fruits - mostly berries stored in juices to be used in baking, breakfasts and smoothies and once in a while desert.

Some frozen juice cubes - I use small containers to put in and label once they are done freezing in the trays so I don't have loads of trays or freezer taste.  I have lemon, raspberry and orange as those are the most used in my house.

Some premade “stromboli” (honestly I don't know what to call them - dough, sauce, meat or cheese rolls ready to be baked) for lazy nights.

Some bread dough and pizza dough.

Some juice pops left over from summer that probably need pitched.

Oh and some frozen Vans GF waffles - yum!
