Creative Spaces

I like to contribute to the world by making creative spaces for other people to play in.

I organize a chapter of the Church of Craft (www.churchofcraft.org), which is a real church, and is wholly devoted to the joy of Making Stuff. So every month, I set up a room where 30-or-so people can gather, where there’s a whole bunch of materials to dive into, and some kind of fun project to try. It’s always amazing how, in the course of a few hours, everyone who shows up becomes friends, and relaxes, and finds a wonderful positivity. People trade favorite art stores, and email addresses, and stories. And everyone leaves looking refreshed.

Creative playtime is just so important to good health.

What a cool thing! I've never heard of it, but it's just wonderful. Like sewing circles of my grandmother's day and quilting bees, only for all types of crafts that you can imagine (and many that you can't!). Creativity IS the religion! I just love it. I think this video in quicktime or windows media (linked from the Church of Craft's website) is so much fun to watch! Thanks Sister Diane!

Hi again,
I have to tell you, I was telling my neighbor, Jeanne, who I spend time with in creative pursuits (right now working on my son's quilt), about the Church of Craft and she LOVED it. She said when she retires next year she's going to see about something similar.  Anyway, with that on her mind, she was at another neighbor's house (her name is Henny), who happens to work at our local nursery. She mentioned that we are working on sewing projects together (and that yet another neighbor is about to join us) and Henny said, “Oh! I'd love to come, but can I bring something other than sewing to work on?” Ha! Jeanne was ecstatic! She's seeing her own little church of craft blossoming right before her eyes. Amazing what intention and The Power of Attraction will do!

That’s so cool! I think creative work is really a natural attractor between people. I hope you all have wonderful times together!

Thanks so much for the heads-up! I wrote in to offer help with the legalities of churchdom.

When I move, I will have to look into establishing a Church of Craft in Houston.  It sounds like just the sort of organization that could bring together the interfaith crowd there, sharing a love of creating while learning about one another.
This is a fantastic movement!

You definitely should start one in Houston! If Austin has a chapter, then Houston needs one. :-) Please let me know if I can be of assistance there.
