My fiance gave me a wonderful compliment the other day: "You are the most passionate metalhead I've ever known in my twelve years of being on the scene. Heavy metal is part of your soul."

Seems odd to some people, but totally natural to me. I love all types of underground metal. It's the soundtrack to my life, and that's what I write to; lately I've been listening to a lot of the gentler gothic or doom styles whilst at the keyboard. Makes for a good atmosphere.

In some beliefs, the harp is connected to water and the emotions, and the flute with air and thought. In ancient Ireland, the harp had associations with the moving of one's emotional soul. It was also necessary for the Bard to be fully qualified in the three types of music, Goltrai (sad music), Geantrai (happy music) and Suantrai (sleep music).

When I play the flute or whistle down near the beach, the birds always flock around me and respond.

Now that it is spring again, I am going to be playing my harp with the door open again, as the young house sparrows come and sit on branches outside my door and respond as my audience *smiles* - Harp and "flute" reunited!

Perhaps not the most ethereal stuff in the world, to some minds, but I get a lot of juice from listening to Tiki music while I make things.

(For the uninitiated, this is the oeurve of Martin Denny, Arthur Lyman, Don Tiki, and others.)

It's transportive stuff -- possibly because it evokes a lush, tropical world that's often in contrast to my home of Portland, OR. I think it's also just a little silly, and so helps me not to take my making too serously, thereby suffocating it. :-)

If you're curious, you can stream some tiki, or get a podcast, over at http://www.vegasvics.com/

Aloha,
DG

When painting, I like the harp and flute as well, but I find that drumming opens a door to my more primative, creative spaces and that's usually the works I am most pleased with. The music around me strongly influences the entire work, though.

When writing, it's not usually music. It's the topics I hear and/or the little moments that end up expanding within my mind. When I'm actually writing, the outside world just fades completely away and I am lost in my thoughts only.

Peace,
Anna

Usually it's the combination of the two instruments, but sometimes I like hardcore rock'n roll or psytrance.
