My little space

DG said Aug 4, 2006, 6:51 AM:

I used to have an entire room for creative endeavors, but then moved to a smaller home. So now I have a small worktable, surrounded by towering stacks of shelves. On the shelves are a giant array of craft supplies, semi-organized into plastic boxes, by categories. (But as of yet, unlabeled, so I still have to look through everything.)

My space gets overwhelmed easily, so I have to clean up after each project before I move on to the next one. I’m not a fan of clean-up – I like big, creative messes. But, left unchecked, I’m capable of creating a really horrific “creative mess.” So, this enforced discipline is probably a good thing after all. :-)

Oh, I hear you! My creative space is in the attic where I have a small work table and two floor-to-ceiling shelves with all of my supplies and stuff semi-organized on them, and a small dresser full of envelopes, cloth, ribbon and scraps of this and that. Wedged between one shelf and the wall are large pieces of craft paper and boards of varying thicknesses. Like your space, mine is easily overwhelmed. Because this is the attic, it is the storage location for all of our seasonal decorations, like wreaths, candles, windsocks, giftwrap, and lotsa stuff I really should just get rid of! You would think we decorate for every holiday to the extreme, but we really don't. Also, along one wall in the attic are boxes that belonged to my inlaws, now deceased, who did gobs of genealogy research. That stuff ain't going anywhere!

So I can totally relate. In the heat of the summer, I take things out of there to work on downstairs or at a neighbor's house. Then when I go to put it back, I pretty much just stack it on my little table. I have some work to do in that room so that I can use it again as the weather cools. Thanks for the reminder!!

At the moment my creative space is a couple of corners of my New York apartment - which is quite spacious by New York standards, really.  My two roommates also use it, though, which sometimes puts a damper on creative pursuits.  It's hard to write, draw, paint, or especially sew when someone is watching their TV show in the same room.
In any case, I have my writing and illustration section at my desk/drafting table, and my sewing/crafts section at my sewing cabinet (which has a little elevator in it for the sewing machine, but can also be a flat table-top.

My accessories are scattered all over the house.  I will need to consolidate them soon, as I am moving to Texas.  For a while, they will live in carefully numbered boxes and piles in my parents' garage, until I get my apartment there sorted.

I cannot wait until I have my OWN space to organize.

Ah, moving the creative supplies … . I remember my last move, after packing seven boxes with craft stuff, debating hard with myself over whether or not I should keep a big bag of silk flower scraps I’d scored five years earlier.

“You have enough craft stuff! You haven’t used these things in FIVE YEARS!”

“Yes, but someday the perfect project for them will come along, and I have to be ready!”

… Yes, they’re still with me. Someday my project will come.

Oh, that's a refrain I know well.
At the moment, I'm trying to convince myself that I don't need to keep every single fat quarter I've ever acquired from friends.  I have bins and bins of fabric, and some of it may need to be donated to the creative efforts of other locals rather than be lugged cross-country.

And the paints!   I definitely don't need to move boxes of old and unusable supplies.  Might be the better part of valor to dump everything that's over a year old anyhow.  This whole sorting thing will make me crazy before the move is done, I swear.
