Thanks. :) We moved recently and I am in a new house. So I still need to get a proper studio setup back up and running. I still need to complete this series of works. Thanks for the encouraging comment.

      Hello charlesellis!
Thanks for this GREAT video. How much fun! I love your idea. And yes. Getting started is definitely by far the hardest. But this is a great idea.
Thanks again!

I like how you allow the raw canvas to show behind the pieces, that's so cool!

One of my weird little projects is to make abstract paintings off of Sega Genesis video game screens. This is how I made "Digital Mermaid", one of my favorite pieces to date. The process is really fun, and I would encourage anybody to try something like this! As we all know, the hardest part of any work of art is GETTING STARTED.

I have just started on a new series of small portraits (It measures 28x18 cm.) I am working with an acrylic primer and charcoal on raw canvas. By the end I should have around 7 pieces.
I am enjoying it so much.
Here are the first two!

      Hi everyone,

I shoot a lot of interviews for the web & wanted to pass on some tips.

The word “composition” is misdefined in most dictionaries in that these definitions
usually state it is a thing in itself. But composition cannot exist independently of a message.

Composition: Any or all of the actions necessary to integrate and give
meaning to a message.

And I have gone further in handling it than the many text books with their infinity of rules for composition, some of them valid, many of them false and misleading. I have the WHY that one should compose properly, and that is: to make a scene or picture INTEGRATE rather than disperse. That is why one uses color harmony, geometric design, mood lines, center of interest and other such tools.

Creating a dvd as a type of an interview,, framing and background, depth of your home, outdoors or office environment would be great for future generations…always make 2 masters; one to store away for safekeeping.

A standard composition in interview videos are the person's eyes should be placed on the top third horizontal line of the picture. The size of the person's face is also important. Leave about an inch of space above the head and frame the bottom at the chest or just below the shoulder area. Place the subject more to the left or right so you have room for logo's and graphics in post. Fade out the background a bit so the audience focuses on the speaker yet the background integrates with the topic.

Lighting and Sound and care of camera are other topics i can post later. Anyone that needs help on film or videos can write to me and i will help as much as i can.

Know your camera and film and lighting by drilling before an actual shoot. preconceive the picture you are going to shoot; reducing the lag of seeing it and shooting when you are ready. Some major thoughts take no more than two or three seconds before they are gone so this helps when filming and creating a comfort zone with the talent.
Kathy

Yes, I've definitely had several experiences like this. It is fabulously valuable to view an artist's work in person. A few months ago I came across an Andy Warhol exhibit in Chelsea (favorite place to be around art). I've never been more stunned in my life. There simply isn't any way to convey the same effect through a picture or print.

The first time I went to the National Gallery In Wahington DC, I flew through the halls looking for the Vermeers. I was so impatient to see 4 Vermeers - all at once. When I did find them I was first taken aback at how small they were. When viewed in a book or on poster, they seem larger than life. When seen in person, they were like small gems - glowing with an inner light. I stood in front of them and literally wept. I stayed there until a guard took interest in my lingering.

After the Vermeers, I wasn't sure there was much I would want to see - I grew up in Chicago and at the Art Institute there. The Art Institute of Chicago is a world class museum; I had grown up looking at VanGogh and Monet and Renoir (among many others). But never Vermeer.

You bring up a good point about appreciating your local art and artists. Although there is something utterly transcedant about seeing works of art which inspired you to be an artist.

After seeing the Vermeers, I kind of dawdled about for an hour or so, then went to the second, newer building of the National Gallery. There I came face to face with Diego Rivera. I fell deeply in love with the vision of his work. At the end of the day, I could not say for certain which work moved me the most - the Vermeers (which I had driven from Wisconsin to D.C. just to look at), or the Riveras, which were a revelation to me.

      Hi :)

I like the fact that you are using strange juxtapositions in your work. You seem to place things together in an interestingly odd way. I would work on building on this. What type of artists' work do you find interesting? What when you work tickles you or keeps you motivated? This is what I look at when working. It is great that a person can feel your enthusiasm for what you do!

First Problem Huge Mountains are difficult to carry alone… It takes a village to move a mountain. Second Problem, often bigger than first, perhaps family and friends cannot see with the same eyes… Third Problem, biggest of all, learning how to assimilate the power and meaning of the mountain, becoming the mountain, thus living the paradox between this and that while, essentially, the mountain falls, melts like snow into the ground of being. Fourth Problem, this may take awhile… Keep smiling that helps.

Tagged with: LIVING THE PARADOX, MYSTIC MOUNTAIN, the ground of being
Access: Public | Type: Blog | 6 Comments

Peace to All
PJ

What knowledge do you keep
In the darkness of that black, black eye?

They say you are a trickster, but it is wisdom
I feel behind the dipped ink of your gaze
Insight, creation, what all I will never know
For you hood yourself with a slow blink
Mystery bird the shade of nightwind
Lady of secrets, enigma on wings
You will not be known

They will find your feathers
In places you have never been
Could these be amulets, charms, sliced from the midnight sky?
Cut out with the sharpest, burning, knifewhite stars
Dusted with a silent mist of moon?
Wherever they have come from
They tumble to earth in the simple shape and seeming of Raven feathers
But they carry this strong corvidae blessing:
Shadow wings stretch as a shield above you
Sharp, onyx eyes watch as a ward over you
Constant
Unblinking
Blessed Be

And You . . .
Nature's wanton riddle wrapped in ebony
You still sail the treetops
As black as the memory of every darkness
Missing a tail feather here and there . . .
With a cry that sounds like it will tear your throat
You alight on a branch too slender

As it breaks beneath you . . .
Your secrets splash against the sky

Black eyes blaze brilliant with
Laughter . . .
As the wild wind catches your widespread
Wings . . .

© Edwina Peterson Cross

Do you see the three Red Chiefs astride three white stallion?
There, over there, See the five women elders seated round the fire.

Once… stalled in this desert
Out of water
Out of food..
Out of tears
Surrendered
Wild Coyote-Crone Woman stood

Here, says the finger, again pointing to the sand
Up to here her footprints ran…

Like an hourglass
Wrong side up
Too long in the desert heat
turned itself inside out

In one breath
One great sigh
Wild Coyote-Crone Woman became
The sand
The moon
The sky.

*PJ Starr a/k/a Arpana Anandya
Wall hanging & poem

I am working on the different stages of awakening as I have experienced the process.... sometimes I sew, sometimes I write, sometimes I create mandalas... In the early stages I created a lot... why I have slowed down I cannot say, unless it has been lack of faith in self to create... But a doorway has opened and I am welcoming the new flow...
