inspiring music

jodi said Jul 24, 2006, 4:21 PM:

I have realized that one of my main sources of inspiration always comes back to listening to some good music.

Have been listening to some female vocalists lately (Tori Amos, Heather Nova, Ani DiFranco, Bjork… etc.). These songwriters usually inspire me to get off my butt and start doing. Dunno, maybe the feminist in me comes alive? Then I always have to dilute the estrogen with some Led Zep. I love anything passionate and moving. Oh : Daniel Lanois…

Anybody else inspired by another medium from their own or other music?

Absolutely - I bought my first Bjork cd (Post) and ended up spending the rest of the day making a weeping willow out of wire and multicoloured beeds, not even realizing that I'm messing up my hands! (I should have worked with pliers, but as usual, when I get in the mood to create I can be quite impatient) Tori Amos and the soundtracks of K-Pax and American Beauty also puts me in that “zone”. And then there's Sigur Ros, Coldplay, Buddha Bar and Cafe del Mar. At the moment I am also listening to Jack Johnson to restore my inner peace. =)

Hello, I just joined your pod even tho I don’t have any pictures up yet…I hope to figure it out soon as I make some space on my ‘puter.
I can relate to everything I’ve read on here so far. My mind is full of ideas of things to create but I seem to go thru a procrastination dance prior to picking up a brush! I think it’s a swirl of thoughts and feelings: not worthy, don’t have time, too much else to do first, can’t relax, etc. It just takes some time and I’m okay with it but would like to minimize it. I find it does a world of good to spend time in galleries finding works I like and examining them. I haven’t seen any grand masters’ tho and sure would like to.
I finally submitted one painting for the local Mayor’s Salon. If it is rejected, which I find out tomorrow, I will submit it to the local ‘Salon Des Refuses”, and I like the history of that show. This is the first time I have done this so I’m a little nervous.
Jodi, I really like your painting talent and your comments. Thanks for starting this pod.

Ah, it's so lovely to hear that people outside of Canada are as taken with Daniel Lanois as we are!

As for inspirational music - in addition to those already mentioned (all of which are fantastic) I have been creatively inspired by a multitude of musicians.  For writing: Phillip Glass, Penguin Cafe Orchestra, Glenn Gould playing Bach, Kate Bush's Aeriel.  For general creative bubbling and thinking: Dead Can Dance, Jeff Buckley, Cowboy Junkies, Eminem (surprisingly very creatively stimulating!), Keren Ann, David Gray, and last, but my long-time favorite, Leornard Cohen.

Great pod, by the way! I look forward to checking it out more!

Hi, i just found a beautiful new cd, by Azam Ali, who also sings with a group called Vas…The Cd i am listening to is  called Portals of Grace, she is originally from Iran, grew up in India, and in this Cd she interprets Midieval music, from the twelfth through fourteenth century, from Europe. Very haunting and unusual.

yes well have you ever heard the song runaway love by mary j blige and ludacris it talk about what some young black girls have to go thorough when they're young. I think it's a good message because it shows you that you have to be strong and fight for what you believe in. It's also a bad message because some people actually live like this.

Hello Jodi,

thanx for creating such a creative place;)

Music inspires me in many ways..to create music, to write, and to move on and make a difference. Usually when I hear a great beat I am inspired to create a song of my own. But then when I hear some old classics for the soul, it moves me and warms my heart.

much love

Thanks for starting this Jodi. As one who writes music I am impressed with the fact that I get inspired mostly by visual art, a walk through the Met or the Guggenheim or the Art Institute or the Dali Museum will produce a subtlety of shading in my work. Hanging out with masters seems to have some of their vision rub off on me. They make me better. You can hear some of my work at http://emptinessdances.com if you are interested.

Hi G!

Welcome to our group.
So interesting:  As I am inspired by music in my visual work, you are inpired by the visual. I love the way a master's work can be uplifting. It inspires in how it shows you possibility and different perspective… triggering something new inside you. Thank you for sharing this thought with us.
