Troolee bad riting

Sparrow [no longer around] said Oct 7, 2007, 6:22 AM:

I am here with the oven timer going for fifteen minutes and I am writing and I wish there was something witty coming to mind because there isn't and here I am still sitting here and so here's the thing:  there isn't anything in my ocean of ideas.  the fish all died and are afloat on the surface.  it looks like there was an oilspill.    Ya, okay.  what about stringing together rants and raves and random words like bubbakibba bubbakibba book bird bum.  Hate it when people drive recklessly and I wish the tooth fairy was real.  Brown polyester bothers me deeply and i won't even tell you why.   and, there is my cat, miss sallypants and I would like to come back as a cat. and i won't even tell  you why.

And now for local news.  this just in:  my head is filled with buttons.  Odd buttons sold in jars at garage sales to people who do interesting things with fabric and probably have homemade jam in their cupboards.  i am walking down a long corridor  and it is long.  and I am still walking and don't come with me if you need something interesting to happen.  I am playing hopscotch with the pattern on the carpet.  Lots of doors, none are open and I am still shuffling along and whoops and dammit I wish I had become a ballerina.  or a garbage man.  Not a man though, so that last one is definitely not going to happen and why am I soft in the middle when the rest of my life is so hard….I am doing a little soft-shoe now but you still look bored okay so I donevencar.  I donevencarifyoureadthisornothing I once tasted a dog biscuit.   and that's the point I'm trying to make.  and she calls that lasagna.  but here's the thing–Im on the beach wishing I knew how to skip stones instead of school and where's a good idea when you need one.

and that will be all–proceed to the exit.

Bored?  Bored?  Are you kidding?  What a wonderful, humorous piece of troolee bad riting!  I think I may have died and gone to heaven or maybe I just fell down the rabbit hole!

I loved the jars of buttons.  I have homemade jam in my cupboard but I don't do anything clever with fabric and buttons.  It did make me think of being a little girl and making sock puppets at Grandma's with her jars and jars of fascinating buttons.  That was fun!  I feel a pirouette coming on.

More please.

Oh!  what a treat, a total treat to read. I really do think I have to start a Truly Bad Writing pod and forget the rest sometimes.

This is just delightful, Sparrow -
I have to quote some of my favourite bits, so expressive, funny and totally unique, a voice I'd be happy to read on and on and on..

there isn't anything in my ocean of ideas.  the fish all died and are afloat on the surface.  it looks like there was an oilspill.

bubbakibba bubbakibba book bird bum (I especially liked bum)

Brown polyester bothers me deeply

my head is filled with buttons.  Odd buttons sold in jars at garage sales to people who do interesting things with fabric and probably have homemade jam in their cupboards.

dammit I wish I had become a ballerina.  or a garbage man.

why am I soft in the middle when the rest of my life is so hard….

I once tasted a dog biscuit.

Well I guess I could have just quoted the whole thing pretty much. I'm looking at these lines and am thinking many of them could be a great 'prompt' for more writing – to go into a specific scene for say, 20 minutes, describing all the details as if it was happening now. (sometimes writing in the present tense helps).

Forget about 'interesting'… we are not interested in interesting. For me writing is so much more about me discovering something, which may be simply the pure pleasure of climbing into a situation and taking a look about. I have a quote I love from Ian McEwan in my Notes Along the Way 4 -
“Anything becomes interesting if you look at it closely enough: realism is all the novelist needs, not fantasy or escape from the real world.”
So, yes, more please dear Sparrow,

Love,
Sandra

that is so true that anything can become interesting, thats what art is about right? we're all artists in one way or another.
that's what writing, and art should be about in itself, discovering rather than telling or showing.

one more thing:

the oven timer going

Wonderful example of 'sensuous' detail ( things we see/hear/feel/smell/think). I'm right there, in the kitchen ( or at least that's my vision, it doesn't matter if the -I- character was or not), and the 'scene' is set with no 'telling'.

wonderful. funny. gripping and surprising.

I hear a voice in the writing, a unique voice coming through. I love what she does with language. she is very funny, but at the same time I get a sense that she has been to places nobody would volunteer going if they knew in advance… like she also knows about the dark side of the moon…

looking forward to more!

with love,
Gabriele

Dear sparrow,

I was 'troolee' taken by what you call 'bad riting.' I mean, you took me right along on your trip through what is or isn't in the mind that wants to say witty and entertaining things, can't think of anything, and is both witty and entertaining anyway – it's the journey that's important, more than the words, even more than the ideas. No I don't mean that exactly, I mean that when one doesn't stop the flow or try to guide it in a particular direction (even if one has a particular theme in mind, such as one of the exercises in the optional exercises archive), amazing things come out and that includes a sort of a package – in a sense, the words, style, etc., choose themselves.

I am looking forward to reading more of your writing.

Oh boy–watch out for what happens when you encourage me!!!   I am so delighted that my little traipse through crazy land pleased you and watch out for more rubbish.

The brown polyester one is a toughy.  Nasty first grade teacher–this one wouldn't be funny unless I dropped a heavy object on her.  (hey,  there's an idea…)

As Gabriele often says, I think you failed this assignment Sparrow :)

Wonderful stuff and amusing. There's a great sense of humour in the piece …  I loved it.

and she calls that lasagna
made me really laugh.

So many wonderful images in it.

I love reading your stuff so so so much. I usually buy a book based on the first page- if it grabs me, if it is funny or quirky or weird or I just love it. so I would buy your book sparrow, if i found it on the shelf with a really neat cover too. it would have a neat cover.

I am so glad that I came across this piece, sparrow, because it is really, TRULY, Lovely…

I love “donevencar” and believe that that should be added to the dictionary.

And I really, want to know why the I character doesn't like brown polyester… does it have to do with the UPS guys?!

I love, love, love this piece and would love to read more….

Wondering, wondering.  The first masterpiece of English(?) literature I decide to read, determined to critique, having joined the pod a few minutes ago.  (What was I thinking?)

Sensational was the first thought, funny, there is a theme… chaos and dispair mixed with determination and brute defiance.  Learnt some new words.  Is this an intimate insight into the female mind? Six things happening at once with just one keyboard as the outlet. Secret womens business?

Very entertaining, good read, emotionally alive - could feel the frustration as I read it.  Definitely a sharing experience.

Thank you.

Andrew

thank you kindly for commenting on my first dive here.  You have inspired me–maybe I can resurrect that much younger, more innocent version of myself and fling caution to the wind again.

you know Sparrow, whenever I am feeling particularly frustrated/ despairing about my writing - I come here and read this. It makes me smile, chuckle and feel better. Thank you Andrew for your wonderful comments, and a very warm welcome to you here! Sparrow, if you are able to find this voice again… I will be first in line to read !

Dear Sparrow,

Found myself very attracted by the catchy title of this piece. It turns out to be everything I hoped it would be and more.

what about stringing together rants and raves and random words
like bubbakibba bubbakibba book bird bum

This is poetry. The kind that wells from a sacred spring.

The whole piece reads like a song, rich and flowing with newness and timelessness.

If this is crap, Sparrow, I want it on a sandwich, please.

So glad Andrew came along and brought this to my attention.

In gratitude,
Nell ;-)

LOL, that was so funny. Like a breath of fresh sunshine, yet some how dismal, in a comical way.
I loved the “wishing i knew how to skip stones instead of school,” that is soo true. ;)
its strange what we say when we mean to say nothing, sometimes we say more.

freeing mind, freedom, opening from outside to inside and inside to out, inspiring…..thats what you have given to me Sparrow. Thankyou. I joined the group a while back and have done approximately nothing so far but this may have got me over the doorstep.

Thank you, Jenny.  I highly recommend this assignment to get you into the swing of things.  Just do your best to write your worst.  Surrender to badness, wholly and completely.

Bet you'll be surprised at what comes up…

cheers,

wowza! what a fun little piece! you have inspired me to play around with my words a little more, especially when I am feeling stuck in the moment. which I guess is exactly where I would want to be “stuck” anyways….
