A classic montage is a series of shots that “show” the story, and are often quick-paced and set to music. The montage is used most frewuently to quickly move the plot of the story along - it is a time saver.
Another type of montage that has become popular in films lately is the voice-over montage. Often a character is reading a letter or some other type of communication, and the pictures are revealing more about the situation (what is not being said.) This is the type of montage that I hae in mind for this assignment.
To make this easier, you may use any assignment from the assignment board to build on. You may write a new piece specifically for this assignment, or you may choose to adapt something you have already written.
The Assignment: Using any assignment from the assignment boards, write a scene where there is no dialogue in the live action images. The dialogue is to be entirely voice-over. It could be a character reading a letter, leaving a message, writing an email, making a phone call or reading a poem, etc.. You may choose to have the images go deeper into the story to reveal more action than is being said, or you may choose to employ irony, and have the images contradict the voice-over narration (which can be a great comedic vehicle.)
To complete this assignment, first write the voice-over portion as a 20 minute freefall. If you are adapting your own work - or someone else's - this part is easy because it's already done. Once the voice-over narration piece is complete, write the description of images that somehow further the dialogue by either revealing more of the story, or contradict what is being said.
When put together, the dialogue and action should flow to reveal more together than either could reveal alone.
If you are unsure about screenwriting format, read through some previous posts. I will be happy to answer any questions or concerns by email.
