Nick and Nora's Infinite Playlist

It's definitely not The Thin Man updated and I know that for a fact. Young Adult author Rachel Cohn was working on this book when I was taking her “Writing for the Young Adult Audience” class at UCLA. She lives back East, but came out just to teach the class. The movie deal was already in the works, almost before she and her partner, David Levithan, put pen to paper, based on their reputation from previous YA novels.

Well, the movie just came out. I'm going to read it, and then go see the movie. To me, it's always interesting how a script is adapted from a novel. Also, knowing the history of the book, I am just so curious about it.
Since Rachel and  David were operating from different ends of the country at that time, they wrote a lot of it on line, emailing responses to each other about the last writer's entry.

If anyone else has read it, sees the film, or would like to do what I'm going to do, I'd love to discuss it with you. I can almost see something like this being born from work done right here in DD…

xo,
Andrea

oh, very interesting Andrea!
I don't know the book, so I can't respond on that level - but of course I do like the idea of something being written by DD members via email. I think it would only work between two (maybe 3? one as a kind of watcher?) people, not that scripts aren't written by many, but I suspect to do it all virtually it would work best with a limited number of writers. ?

And, I'm wondering if a kind of synergy is needed - my hubby has co-written several screenplays - he and another actor (when hubby was still an actor). They hit it off right from the start - on a personal level, and I think this made the whole thing a lot of fun - and, they had similar ideas about how things should work, so 1+1=3, in a way. (and they never sold the screenplays, but that's another story).

I do have a couple of pieces that I sometimes think could work in film - I'm waiting to get the collection finished before I start another project. So I guess I'm saying I'm personally interested in being involved, should the right 'click' happen at the right time…

Love,
Sandra

Sandra,

I think it's an awesome idea because collaborating in such a way brings an entirely different energy to the writing. I think it's best for just two - because three people might just be overwhelming in many ways, but I think if you start as a story, it would be easier. Once the story is firm, whip it right into sreenplay form.

I'd love to see the results of something like this.
