Bad Writing: Tips to be more efficient

Kaleidoscope Eyes [no longer around] said May 10, 2007, 7:53 AM:

Clearly we’ll see that it can always be easiest for you to make a bunch of different files that are similar, if you have a template to do them by. First, one starts with the template that you will make them from, and take the first one and copy it into the document you plan to use.

If we follow this so far, then we are on our way. You take the elements that you need to use on each one and copy them into the template that you have already saved, and we find it is therefore from then on easier to make more if you have done this from the start. Then you make changes to each element as they are needed, change any colors that are required, and save this to your hard drive or onto a disk, and that is it for the first one.

If sizes must be changed, they are best done so by making one to the correct dimensions of whatever you need, and then you can save copies of each previously done template as a different file along with the ones before. We see the work goes much easier after this next one is saved. Then it’s a matter of just copying each one you need, with the different colors and font sizes, and if any other changes are needed, you do them too.

If this has all been done alright, then the last step is very simple. Take all the different files you made the first time and save them as one set. Take the other ones and save a different set, and you won’t be confused next time you need to make either one. It will save a lot of confusion if you give each a different name. When your client wants one, whatever it is, you won’t be trying to figure out what you did in the first place, and that should be easy to tell which one to use if you are asked about it.

Keep doing it this way, and you can see it’s something that will streamline your work every time it’s required to do it again. It’s pretty much a simple process if you have followed the directions to the letter above.

Oh K-Eyes I can't finish reading your piece because I'm laughing so hard!!

This is just brilliant and should be sent to ALL writers of manuals and other such ilk to demonstrate how they torture us.

You may even have managed to write even more Truly Awfully than I did…. Thank you, I feel slightly better ;-)

I always wondered how to make a bunch of different files that are similar. Now I know! I think.

That was hilarious, K-eyes. I ran a press one time that had a manual exactly like your file riff, except it was written by a Japanese person with a very tenuous grasp of English. If I hadn't had to use it to figure out how to run that press, I would have been rolling.

Damn fine (crappy?) work,

Tom

I was thinking about this piece the other night.. and *still* giggling over it. It made me think about all the fantastic writing that is 'buried' here, how we tend to look at what is most recent. So.. I'm 'digging' this up so others might notice and enjoy !

Love,
Sandra

ack - how did I miss seeing this post…then I realized you posted this before my time here ;-) hilarious great work, I like the twist on the topic.. why do I have an image of someone standing at a desk with a sledgehammer trying to make their files fit a certain way ahaha my favorite line:

love it!

:-) I highly reccomend digging way back through time on this Truly Bad Writing Board. There are some fabulous posts. The board has gone a bit dormant lately, maybe because you have to scroll down to see it on the 'home page'?

But this is truly one of my all time favourites. I'm laughing again.

I think that you may have mispellled a word or two in your essay their. And did you mean to run on your sentences like that? Not sure. This is my first comment. Just practicing the art of writing badly by commenting badly… but then, didnt I just make it better by revealing myself? Ooops.
