Cynthia, I think you make a great point.  On a similar note, we should try to be mindful of religion when receiving healing wishes.  I am not a Christian, and it used to be that when my family said they would pray for me, all I heard was their foisting of religion, but in time I've come to realize that they're expressing their love in the way that's most meaningful to them, and I try to accept it as a gift.

Similarly, my family often sends prayer requests or asks me to pray for people in the family.  I usually say I will keep them in my thoughts, and I do, or I practice Tonglen with them in mind.  Other times, I simply agree to pray for them.  Though prayer, strictly speaking, is not something I consider myself to do, I want to communicate that I'm offering love the best way I know how.
