Thanks for the awesome information!

Here's an article on Aromatherapy Basics:

The basis of aromatherapy is the use of essential oils, the vital life essence of aromatic plants and flowers in a concentrated form.

Many plants are needed to produce even an ounce of oil -for example, 6 pounds of lavender flowers are needed to make 1 oz of oil while 300 pounds of rose petals are required for 1 oz of rose oil.

Most essential oils are obtained through steam distillation. This process involves filling large vats with plant material which is then steamed at high pressure. The hot steam causes the essential oils to be released by the plant. The oils do not dissolve in water and will float to the top. They are then skimmed from the top.

They are highly concentrated and have a unique chemical composition consisting of botanical vitamins, hormones and antibiotics.

Some essential oils relax, sedate, balance, rejuvenate, invigorate, and even enhance memory. Other beneficial propertiescan include anti-inflammatory, analgesic, anti-bacterial and anti-spasmodic.

The action of an essential oil on the body is holistic, combining both physical and mental aspects. Essential oils work together with all aspects of the body, strengthening rather than weakening it so that it may aid in the healing and restorative process.

Pure essential oils have a unique place in natural homes and lifestyles, providing natural alternatives to the many synthetic chemical hosehold products.

Some oils have up to 250 different components making them nearly impossible to duplicate synthetically.

The aromatic molecules of essential oils come in contact with the only part of our brain that is exposed outside our body -the olfactory bulb. This olfactory bulb, which is responsible for the sense of smell, is thousands of times more sensitive than any other sense. Scents are tied directly to the neo-cortex which is the part of the brain that processes memory and emotions and where basic drives are stimulated.

It is thought that by inhaling essential oils, we elicit responses which can promote a sense of health and well-being.

It is also believed that molecules of an essential oil also permeate the skin and are carried by the lymphatic and circulatory systems to the inner organs. Whether the oil is absorbed through the skin or inhaled, it may have therapeutic effects on the body and emotions.

Aromatherapy Safety

Ther are roughly 30 or so essential oils that are widley available and considered relatively safe.

Others are skin irritants, or toxic, while still others are abortive, or not to be used during pregnancy or on children.

When using aromatherapy for small children, always dilute the normal/adult amount by half (or more.)

The following essential oils are contraindicated during pregnancy:

Aniseed, Armois, Cornmint, Fennel, Hyssop, Cotton, Marjoram, Basil, Birch, Myrrh, Oregano, Pimenta, Racemosa, Plecanthrus, Star Anise, and Tarragon.

Because essential oils are highly concentrated, and some are known skin irritants, the safest way to use them is in diluted form.

Some are considered skin "friendly" such as lavender and tea tree oil.

Look Up Specific Essential Oils

My favorite breakfast these days is my Lemon Soaked Oats recipe.

In the evening before bed, in a small bowl mix 1/2 cup rolled oats, about 1/4 cup pure water, 2-3 tablespoons organic raisins and 2 drops YL lemon essential oil. Mix well, cover bowl and leave on counter overnight. In the morning you will have a tasty breakfast of lemon soaked oats, no cooking required. The sweetness of the raisins transfers to the oats as they rehydrate, so I've never needed to add sweetner.

Additional variations include adding some chopped almonds (I like unsalted best), or using golden raisins. Freshly ground flaxseeds are good when added right before eating also, as are walnuts. YL orange oil would probably be good as well, but I haven't tried that yet.

I use Young Living oils to scent bath salts. I have used many types of oils but have not been nearly as happy with them as I have been the Young Living Oils. I intuite which oils or oil blend is optimal for the person in their salt and do a custom blend just for them.
Some of my favorite custom salts are Joy, Peace and Calming and Sandalwood & Rose with a drop of Valor. I also use bath oils in my massage therapy work by applying with mixing oil to various parts of the body as I am guided. They are also wonderful difused and also inhaled as steam when you have a sinus infection or cold. I also mix a disinfectant type blend to spray on my massage table after each client. The uses of oils are pretty endless really.

Well, when I was younger I was waging a war with acne. I mean, I probably could have one an award for how much acne I had on my face. Haha anyways, one day my acne, i mean my face, got really sunburnt and I was supposed to be lavender on it because I was one of those strange kids who actually listned to their parents. Well, I ended up putting valor on first and then shes told me its the wrong one and to put lavender on next because valor will only enhance its effects. So I did and went to bed smelling like... whatever those smells smell like. Anyways, I woke up the next morning, sumbled out of bed, and wizbang! Acne was gone.... I was still sunburnt but the acne I had for years just dissapeared over night. It was bizzare. I don't know if this will work for everyone or not but give it a shot! My sister tried it and it didn't work for her but I thought maybe it had to do with the melanin I had in my skin due to getting sunburnt.... So maybe thats another ingredient....

Okay, testimonial time. I've been using the mosquito repellent for the past few weeks. It has been a HORRIBLE mosquito summer. Why? We've had almost NO rain. Doesn't make any sense.

Anyway, this stuff really works. I watch the buggers hover over me and then fly off. Not kidding!

On Sunday I shared some with my neighbor who's toddler was being eaten alive. I'm about to take her a printed copy of the "recipe" now, which is why I'm back here. I thought "what the heck, I should report my findings!!"

Check it out... it's SO MUCH nicer than DEET.

Di

Thank you so much for this inquiry - there are different applications and depending on what you are trying to achieve, the methods vary in effectiveness. There are various methods of inhalation that I can post for you later this week. Yes, it is true that inhalation is highly effective because it does enter your blood stream more quickly via the thin membranes in the nasal passage. One methods that is a time-honored tradition is the bowl of hot water with a few drops of essential oils (like this blend for instance) and a warm towel over the head... deep breaths in.... and WOW... amazingly powerful.

Again, I will post and send you a notice when I post about various application methods for essential oils.

Essentially at Your Service,
~K

Hi Kelly,
I'm sort of a novice at this. That's the main reason (other than forgetfulness - ha! ha!) I haven't ordered anything yet. So here's my (first) question: which method is most effective, a topical or inhalation? My guess would be inhalation because it gets straight into your system (thinking about meds in general here). I like the idea of topical, 'cause then I might smell good too. : )

Also, for inhalation, is that done by heating the oils over a candle and letting it waft around you (ala smudging)?
