any designers in the house?

Vanessa said May 31, 2006, 2:33 PM:

Hi Everyone,

I'm Vanessa and I'm relatively new to zaadz! I was excited to find this pod, as I am currently studying Fashion Design for my AA. Before I started school I had no idea exactly how much work really does go into our clothing. Now I'm working on my first real design, I really do appreciate all the work that goes into making garmets. It really is art work. Is anyone else here designing?

Hey all Fashionistas,
Hey Vanessa, I'm not a designer per se, but love love love fashion.  I've worked in fashion my entire career in production mgmt. (w/ a few others on the side) always come back to the rags.  I went to F.I.T in NYC for my AA, it was a great experience and had a long sometimes bumpy career thereafter.  I'm still in fashion & hv always wanted to start my own line.  Right now, I crochet pieces.  I'd say for the most part couture is art work, handcrafts are artwork.  Mass produced pieces, not so much.  But I can see beauty in everything, even the mass produced pcs.
Good luck on yr AA.  When you love what you do, yr bound for success.  Anything I can do or gv any info, wld be more than happy.

Peace & Blessings
Kelly

Kelly and Vanessa,
Thanks for the comments. And yes you can find beauty in almost any item of clothing. Sometimes it is just a little detail like a very neatly alligned piping that catches my eye. I never realized just how much attention one has to pay to these small things like buttons or seams in order to make a master piece. I think for me Haute Couture is beautiful but it defeats the purpose if I can't imagine wearing the item anywhere. Lately though some designers haute couture is creative yet wearable.

Do you have a line or make any wearable art?  Could you suggest wearable art lines to check out?

Hi,
Fashion School is amazing, I have an AA in Fashion Design
and worked as an assistant designer for a couple of years.
I love Fashion, however, I don't take it seriously.  It has become
a hobby that I love.  I've always been the fashionista who wears
what no one else is wearing.  Wearable art is a choice and I don't
believe we have to follow the colors, textures and skirt lengths for
Fall to be “fashionable.”
Creativity is boundless.
Style is limitless.
Exploring your own style is the essence of fashion.
Good luck in school……
Blessed Be,
Navah

Hey ladies thanks for the comments. I do have my own line it is very small and so far has only had one collection (Spring 2005). Right now I have taken this year off to concentrate more on improving my skill and studying fashion at school. I am planning to release a new collection in December of this year.

I would suggest you look at Alabama Project's website if you haven't yet. Their work is not only art and beautiful but they use real craftsmen and women to create the art. I love the idea of using craftspeople to create clothing.

Hey! I'm new to zaadz and although i have no formal training in fashion design i am a self proclaimed fashion designer. I design and wear my own clothes (a more modern take on the hijab) and have been told by many people to start my own line. I'll post some stuff and maybe you guys could critique?

I’m not a professional by any means, although I’ve worked as a costume designer before. I just like to make things - quilts, clothes, costumes, fashion dolls.
I’m looking forward to doing more textile arts in the SCA when I move, and I have a list of clothes I’m making for myself.

I especially want to tailor myself a military-style frock coat (the “pirate” coat, or maybe a rifleman’s coat with rows of silver buttons and braids) for street wear. I will need to do some major pattern adjustment, as I’m sure no man of the period ever had to deal with such a bust as mine. :)

I hope to make myself more art clothes - fun, flirty skirts and tops, historically influenced pieces, and a couple of really nice fitted formals. Mmmm.

Ironically, my stage costume experience is a detriment to my clothing construction, since so few stage costumes are ever formally finished - they’re always being adjusted, velcroed or laced onto a new actor, etc… I have no experience in finishing the things I work on. Oh, well. Live and learn.

sounds like fun to do costume making. Do you get to design the clothes from scratch or only adjusting?

Hello!

I am a student also, but studying dance and global cultural studies. However, I can't deny a passion for clothes fashion, design, and art. When I have free time, I like looking at Vogue and other fashion magazines and designing purses. Over the summer I've finally put in time to make my own dress, which came out a very nice success. I am much more appreciative of how much goes into the fabrication of clothing too, now that I've gotten my hands in it; so I know how you feel. Whenever I go shopping, which is surprisingly not very often, I am always at awe during sales: sometimes I end-up paying $10 or less for one item, and I wonder, how much time and effort really went into this? And for only $10? Really? It is especially sad thinking of who actually made the item and how much they're getting for making it, especially if it comes from a “third-world” country. I always appreciate clothing that is hand-made, and I have paid a lot more attention to such details when I do go shopping.
What is the project that you're working on at the moment? How's it going so far?
