Straightforward, sober, helpful

What I love about this book its simplicity and humility. Rahula isn't trying to sell you enlightenment, he's just trying to explain Buddhism so a layman can understand it. I find many other attempts frustrating in their pretentiousness.

This is worth the effort to get through

This is not an easy read.  It is very well organized and very well researched, however.  It is considered one of the classic introductions to Buddhism.  A lot of it is from the Theravada viewpoint, but the analysis is thorough and the text selections are very good.
