Writing from his prison cell in Nazi Germany in 1945 Dietrich Bonhoeffer, a young German theologian, sketched a vision of what he called "religionless Christianity." In this book, John Shelby Spong puts flesh onto the bare bones of Bonhoeffer's radical
...(more) thought. The result is a strikingly new and different portrait of Jesus of Nazareth(less)
Spong has written prolifically and continues to challenge traditional religious people everywhere with this new book. The first half of the book is a summarization of much of his previous work. It is worth reading to gain an understanding of the stories of Jesus presented in the four traditional gospels as a liturgical metaphor. The remainder of the book rings with the understanding that the message of the Christ mind is one without boundaries, without gender, without any limitations, one filled with respect and passion.
Spong has been accused of being atheist and he does not deny he no longer believes in the theistic traditions about Sacred Being. Theism does not define God. Rather, theism is man (and I mean that to be gender-specific) describing his opinion about who God is. Bishop Spong contends that God has died and it is past time to begin to discover Being within ourselves and to become fully human and whole, united with Sacred Being.
Happy thinking.
