I think that the editorial review doesn't do justice to this book. I read it a few years ago after seeing it reviewed in The Guardian (UK). If you want a light, humourous read this is not for you BUT I was moved. The characters drew me in to such an extent that, by the end, I was a wreck! It is a perfect example of man's inhumanity to man (and animal) and although there may be some parts that could have been written better-or perhaps translated better, I don't know which should be criticised-it ultimately gives the reader something very important to think about. Read it and make up your own mind.
