All four of Pattison’s books featuring Shan, as a Chinese investigator in Tibet, are wonderful. The sophisticated view of both ancient Tibetan mysticism and Chinese Communism is very well done. These are not soft-headed romantic mysteries… But nuanced and carefully woven social commentaries set in modern Tibet with all the different cultural flows portrayed unflinchingly.
