Berbers tribes in North-Africa had communal living where everybody was included; this book also describes the 'timchret' or communal meal.

It has a particular meaning for me as i got it from my berber friend who is from Djur-djura mountains in Kabylia(Algeria). Berbers are little known as culture these days but their living community still thrives on unnoticed in the mountains of Algeria, may it be an example to us!
