I actually found this book on the shelves of the Beach House in the vacation rental we stayed at on the east end of the island. And strange as this may seem, chapters are set right on this tropical estate! It's coming of age, about a boy who is somewhat Holden Caulfield-like struggling for identity in an elite prep school in Honolulu, the same school attended by Barack Obama. Each chapter is like another hurdle for the boy as he deals with a domineering father, the school bully, losing the girl of his dreams, getting suspended from school, you get the picture. But he's different than Holden in that he fights back, including calling the bully out to a fight on the golf course during the Hawaiian Open. What a fight! There's also the tricky matter of interracial dating and lots more, including meeting the boy's grandmother, who's a real firecracker! Great book.
