I love fiction that also teaches! This novel gave me a real glimpse into the lives of women of the time as well as keeping me turning the page to read what happened next.
No wonder men worked so hard to confine us. Women are powerful creatures!
Words cannot celebrate this book enough… Diamant takes us back into the untold lives of women of biblical times… She creates characters with emotion, and raw heart. I ended the book asking where is my red tent? Sure, I'd love to rub my body with oil, eat fresh feta and olives, paint my hands with henna, and tell stories with other women three days a month! Count me in! ALSO, I think she just came out with another history-based fiction piece. I believe it is about early America and the women of that time. Tune it to Diamont – she is telling the tales that have been pushed under the rug and forgotten…until now!
I've read this book several years ago, however, I also have the book unabridged on cd. Since reading the book I have probably listened to it's dramatic reading at least 10 times.
Hearing it read draws you back into an ancient time finding yourself walking past the red tent and hearing the faint chatter of the women inside. You are really able to get a feel of the way women may have lived.
The book is so well written and so plausable it is as if Sister Dinah whispered her life's story into Anita's very ear.
I never tire of revisiting this ancient story. If you have read it also acquire the unabridged cd recording you will not regret it.

This was one of the best “biblical fictions” I have ever read. Diamant absolutely drew me into these characters in such a way that was completely riveting. She wrote in such a colorful manner, I felt every emotion, I could see the features of the characters, and I just could not put this book down. I seldom go back and read fictions after on read, but this one was so “educational” I just may re-visit it one of these days. Great read!
