I am living with Cherokee principles on a forest farm that I hope to leave behind as a sanctuary for wildlife and people in the theatre. I want to turn the whole beautiful watershed into a natural arboretum / garden and keep it as a home for the many animals here, and particularly, the giant mountain ravens. These ravens were massacred in the 10s of 1000s by men doing target practise in the early 1900s, and they still shoot them. Only a few are left in this state, and six are on this land. It is home and should be forever. I wanted to turn the four houses on this farm into the nexus of a small community to operate a playwrights retreat – a place where we develop new plays and get to hear them read by live actors. Maybe we can build a small amphitheatre, a natural one like the stage at the Cherokee Reservation in N.C. Maybe we could build natural wee cottages for the writers and actors to stay in when they visit. And there could be a community kitchen, a small indoor stage and studio, and of course, gardens, gardens, gardens. I am biocentric, valuing the life spirit in all things. I am like my father, who was almost half Cherokee, in trying to always practice what I preach, and now I am trying sincerely to live in harmony with nature. If anybody is interested in this project, I hope you will contact me. I could use help from gardening people, people who love the woods and taking care of woods, and people who are in theatre especially.
