Encouragement needed

Lou-Anne said May 31, 2008, 12:53 PM:

Hi everyone,  I'm new to the community and am looking forward to learning from all of your experiences.  However, life is crazy right now.  I am currently finishing up my M.A. in History and am spending the next three months studying for orals and working as an intern at the Louisiana State Exhibit Museum.  I would really appreciate all of your encouraging thoughts and prayers during this time.  Unfortunatly, I will not be able to interact with you as much as I would like, since I have come to my parents house for the summer in order to work at the museum and they do not have the  internet. I am trying my hardest to provide encouraging words where they are needed and hope that I can have a beneficial influence where it is needed.

Lou-Anne (LA)

Hi there! I'm a newbie here too. Good luck with your internship and finishing up your Masters. I'm an undergrad student, so I can sort of relate to the hecticness of keeping up with school and work and things, though I know that the grad level things must be a lot more of a challenge. I just finished my sophomore year at a college here in NJ,  but i am trying to transfer to the University of Florida to study zoology and then hopefully get into vet school, so I have a lot of school and work ahead of me! good luck and hang in there! :~)

Zoology should be interesting, I originally wanted to be a marine biologist, but after organic I transfered to History.  I do miss all of the math and biology, but this past year I've found what I really love doing (museums and planning events).  I'm kinda hoping I might get a job at a natural history museum so that I can still have some contact with biology.

Good luck with your transfer and thanks for you words of encouragement.

Hi Lou-Anne and Aime,

I, too, am new to the Gaia community. I'm a little unsure of what it means to be here, so far. But, what I do know is the universality of newness, support, and encouragement.

Lou-Anne, best wishes in finishing up your MA and studying for your orals! That must be challenging. You asked for encouragement. I'm wondering how best you are encouraged? FOr the time being, perhaps some shared words of wisdom will be useful:

“Nothing in the world can take the place of perseverance. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent.”
– Calvin Coolidge

“Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambitions. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.”
– Mark Twain

“The higher we sore, the smaller we appear to those who cannot fly.”
- Nietzsche

Aime, thank you for sharing your aspirations! You're right, graduate school is challenging, but I have no doubt that your undergraduate studies are intense and challenging in their own ways. Good luck in Zoology. That must be fascinating. I'll know who to ask if I have any zoo-ological questions ;). (Re: marine biology) I also considered studying marine biology (breifly). I SCUBA dive, so the world beyond sea level is breathtakingly amazing.

As for me, I am also a graduate student at Cal Poly in the central coast of California. I am working toward earning my masters in Marriage and Family Therapy. It is quite challening to be learning the ins and outs of a career that is so soaked in responsibility. I began seeing clients this quarter and it is amazing, terrifying, and extremely rewarding. So ladies, I feel your struggles with school. Keep following your amazing dreams! Best wishes.

I had Zoology as a course in high school last year for two semesters. Before that, it was Botany. I really enjoyed Zoology and learned about organisms that I never saw before. =]

Lou-Anne -

I must say I really admire you for majoring in history.  I myself LOVED my history classes in college but once the class was over my long-term memory failed me….I'm sure I would be just as fascinated and enthralled if I took the same classes over again lol

It does indeed sound like your life must be very busy and crazy right now…..I suppose I could feed you the cliches of, “this too shall pass,”  “the sun will shine after the rain,” yada yada….but I think what might make more of a difference is not to necessarily listen to the words of everyone whos gone before you (even if you are a history major) but rather, listen to the words that are inside you.

You are strong, and completely capable.  And yeah sometimes it may seem crazy hard but just remember that this is YOUR DREAM!!! And look how close you are to reaching it! Think about how strong you will be when this is all over.  And, of course, focus on the trophy……your dream job that you have worked so hard for and totally deserve!!!!

YOU CAN DO IT!!!!!

PS I'm new here too :)

Do what works for you. A lot of people who are supposed to be understanding, can be selfish., I know how things can stay busy and never seem to stop. Just keep looking forward and know that you will evntually have what you want. Be specific in what you ask for, for you will get it. Be specific, i cant stress that enough.

Well LA and others on this thread, I'm not so new, I've been here on Gaia for a while and I still remember the newness shakes and shivers, I am now a Gaian Ambassador, so if any of you newbies have questions, I will do my best to answer, feel free to ask. Even Zoology questions as I have a bachelors Degree in Zoology, from UCC which is part of the national university of Ireland, my native land. I looked for some clever words of encouragement for you and drew a blank. My only advice here on Gaia, is to dare, dive in and exchange with others. and you will get back as good as you give and often more
Good luck on & off line and enjoy yourselves and I will also take this occassion to invite you to my birthday bash (Party Animals) on July 20th- see my blog for more details- but everyone is to come as/ with an Animal and have a whale of a time
blessings

Dear Lou-Anne,

I wish you all the best for finishing your M.A. and preparing for your oral exams. I graduated three years ago and I still vividly remember the time I was writing my M.A. thesis… and after that having to study the written and the oral exams. It was hell! I suffered. Not so much because of the workload (which was managable) but more so because of the mental strain and pressure that was connected to graduating (and doing well).

But, I got it over with! And so will you. Sending you strength and a clear mind to successfully prepare and finish everything up. Don't forget to take a time out to relax every now and again!!!

Peace.
Jenny.

You will do fine and you'll never regret your hard work.  I just received my masters degree in psychology last month.  I did an internship in a public school district and it was a wonderful experience.  I hope you are able to access the internet somehow once in a while.  Congrats to you.  Keep up the good work!

Dear Lou-Ann

It sounds like you're at a very stressful point in your life. You've chosen a difficult path, but it also means it will be more rewarding in the end! I can only relate by saying that junior year has been the most difficult for me, maintaining not only a 4.0 and competeing for the best SAT scores, but also a hectic social and extra-circular life. Remember to just stop once a day and say one positive thing about yourself and just take a deep breath. One day it will be over, but you may find yourself even missing it
Best of Luck to you!

Lou Ann,

Just think of how far you have come. I am sure you will finish with success with your orals. I am just returning to school after being out for 18 years. I always found history to be very interesting. I love museums.

Hang in there, success can be yours if you reach out for it.  Remember, you can do whatever you believe you can do.

Lou-Anne,

I just joined the community today.  I wish you all the best with your classes and your life in general!  I know you will do just fantastic.  You have the strength to finish what you start but remember to take care of yourself.  Taking time for you is the best gift you can give yourself!

Take care,

Lou-Anne (and everybody)

I just joined today as well and I love it here! Good luck on your courses in life (zoology, botany, psychology). I'm going to be a high school senior in the fall, and college is looming near (nervous, I am). Although I may not know a lot about craziness in college, I'm sure I will soon. I too want to study History, but what I want is a degree in Graphic Design (I think that's something new on this thread), but yeah!

My advice is just take things easy and breathe. Breathing is important and you'll find it easier to concentrate and see things clearer. So just breathe and you'll be fine =)
