Hi anonymouspersona,

There are so many topics and styles of writing… that I could never recommend anything for you that isn't filled with my own biases, good and bad.

Can you tell us what you are passionate about, and the style of writing you like?

Take care,

I'm reading Leaves of Grass right now! I discovered it almost by accident in the school library, and now I read a bit every day. I'd never read Walt Whitman before, but I felt like he spoke my soul, which almost never happens. Actually, I'm not sure if that's ever happened to me before… But it was very beautiful.

Hi There,

The “great-ness” of a book really depends on the reader. Everyone enjoys different kinds of books…

If I am seeking some romance I look towards Nicholas Sparks. He's great with detail. I was unable to read one of his books without crying, or laughing out loud. The Notebook, Message In A Bottle, The Wedding, and The Choice are just a few of his, however they are all excellent in my opinion.

If you like Science Fiction, Try The Chronicles of Narnia. Many people believe that they are specifically from children, however in my opinion everyone can relate to these chronicles. They illustrate morals and values through the use of imagination. These books have enabled me to escape from reality!

If you enjoy books on life, I read a book on Oprah's Book Club called She's Come Undone. It's basically the story of the life development of a young girl, how she grew into the adult that she is. It's an absolutely bazzaire book. It constantly keeps you guessing. I odd thing about  it is that it is written by a male author, so basically it's a male percepective of what women go through, however if you touchy about sexuality and personal development I would sway away from this one.

So, Just a Few Suggestions for you! :)

I was just speaking to my neighbor about a fiction novel called The Master and the Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. It is an excellent commentary on the delicate state of Moscow, Russia in the early 20th Century. Satan arrives under the pretense of a magician along with a group of cronies to tempt  and damn the Muscovites in inventive and thrilling ways. This is one of a few intriguing plots in this well-written book. I loved it!

Another great book that heightened my awareness about the state of the world was Thom Hartmann's The Last Hours of Ancient Sunlight. He refers to oil as ancient sunlight, carbon that has been locked in the earth's core for ages and has only begun to be tapped and drastically reduced in the last two centuries.  The book reflects his concern for the role of oil on many fronts and he also describes the other issues that we need to confront in the world,
i.e. water, television, lacking spiritual consciousness and loss of endemic species.
While the book can be overwhelming at times the third part reminds us that there are solutions available and that by making individual shift and connecting to indigenous ways of thinking,  we can find hope and be the change that we want to see in the world.

I also recommend a book by Jeffrey Rothfeder called Every Drop For Sale. Rothfeder reports on water as a growing commodity and potential for political conflict in the future. The book is very accessible for people like me, who struggle with non-fiction and lots of facts, and it was certainly an eye-opener to the value of this often-taken for granted resource.

I hope a few of these books appeal to you. Each one has definitely served me. Enjoy!

Almost all of Nicholars Sparks' Books are quite good.

Much Ado about Nothing (Shakesphere)  and Tales of the Grotesque  and Arabesque ( E. A. Poe) are oldies but goodies.

The Bluest Eye (Morrison) and Under the Blood Red Sun (Salisbury) are blue notes (aka tear jerkers)

As far as books that were life changing or atleast quite touching go:

Moral Apologetics:

The Nicomachiean Ethics (Philosophies of Aristotle) and Mere Christianity by CS Lewis

and
Boundaries ( Cloud & Townsend)

Although the word boundary may cause a person to think of physical boundaries, it addresses emotional and spiritual boundaries as well.

hi there

i would recommend you these two (after thinking a wee bit)

a. The Tree House: Eccentric Wisdom on How to Live, Love and See by Naomi Wolf. it’s about wisdom of naomi wolf’s father. how he sees life and lives the life fullest.

b. Incendiary by Chris Cleave. It’s a novel about about terrorism. How a mother and wife sees terrorism that kills her husband and only son, how she lives her life and sees the effects of the bombing for the majority of the people. How she survives (or not survives? depends on the reader). And nope…i’m not telling the end of the story. It’s simply blown me away. It made me cry and laugh at the same time. My professor gave me the book, saying “You’re a bit cuckoo you would enjoy this book.” He was right.

c. The Curious Incident of The Dog in The Night Time by Mark Haddon. It’s about a 15 yo boy who has asperger’s syndrome. He knows how to do the math, but doesn’t know how to deal with people. It’s simply hilarious.

by the way, i still love the secret garden tho.

Also, any books by Neale Donald Walsch!  (Read Conversations with God Books 1, 2, and 3 in order, though…….well, you don't have to, but they will make more sense, because he'll refer to his earlier books as you read the next) They are not “religious” but very insightful!

I read your blog on Cultural Creatives. Thank you for sharing that. I just joined the GAIA communtiy and, in fact haven't even looked up GAIA to know what these letters actually stand for yet. I'm excited to be apart of this community now and look forward to sharing and learning and fusing journeys through attunement. So many things I have been led to understand more from simply being open to the smallest of moments in life. I will enjoy learning more from you and want to thank you again for sharing this. I would also like to share with you some other books and videos I have been drawn to this last year.

Videos:
*What the Bleep Do We Know
*Waking Life
*The Secret ( which I'm sure you've seen and am always open to discuss as all the others I'm listing)
*Peaceful Warrior (which I've learned balances energy direction, focus, and perspective to enable the purest path to understanding the bigger picture of The Secret)
**quick note** I have witnessed some who seem to see using the power of attraction as a form of control. The Peaceful Warrior expounds on being more connected to others in this.
I'm excited in the fact that you too KES see that we are living in absolutely beautiful moments of existence while simultaneously witnessing the exponential expansion of it. I'm so grateful for becoming part of this community and am happy that I've chosen you as the first I've actually directly shared my journey with. I will be loving to learn more.
I also again recommend the book The Mindful Brain. And always remember … It is where you are, not where you are going.

Mindful Brain

by: Daniel Siegel
This book not only showed about what we are more recently learning about the brain, but also how our brain goes through physical changes when we change our way of thinking. When you eventually end up reading it, I look forward to hearing more about what this book blessed you with to apply on your beautiful journey. The principles contained in it's text correlates with the video I watched that also gave me a much broader awareness of how little I really know about life and all the more possibilities I have to look forward to continue in being open to the moment more often and in realizing that there is no ordinary moment. The video was called Peaceful Warrior. Again, I look forward to hearing how this information has enriched your life.

Loved it. Awakened me and inspired me no end. Brought on very deep changes. It's always going to be on my shelf. Thank you Eckhart.

Thanks everyone for sharing what they have loved. I simply love reading and am always looking out for good books esp the inspiring ones.

Hi,

“The Ending of Time” by JK and David Bohm, a great book in conversational style between one who is of spiritual discipline the other of scientific, in the end they agree, but to begin with the dialogue seems unnecessary and a bit pedantic, and it is, but for good reason if you read it until the end. This may blow your mind.

Another less important, but maybe still has the ability to open your mind up is “Think on these things” by JK

Another is “Freedom, love and aloneness” i think it is called by Osho, he seemed to me to be a really enlightened guy who knew what he was talking about.

Peace

My favorite fiction of all time is a series that starts with Angelique, by Sergeann Golon. It's historical, romantic, heroic, epic. But for lighter fare I am also fond of Georgette Heyer's historical (accurate history) romances. I blogged about her.

There are over 300 books in my books list. The ones on my Favorites list all blew me away !! Happy browsing.

We lost the originator of this thread, but there are so many great personal recommendations, I am contributing this thread to Collective Wisdom: The Library for Community Threads. Stop by and applaud it !!

Blessings, OM Bastet

I would highly (HIGHLY!) recommend “Three Cups of Tea” by Greg Mortenson. A true story about how one person can make an incredible difference in the world. Not only should it be required reading for everyone on the planet, but this man seriously deserves the Nobel Peace Prize.

By far the best book I read this year. Give it a shot.

The Goddesses and Gods of Old Europe, by Gimbutas. There's not that much text; there's hundreds of photos and drawings of artifacts from SE Europe that are 7000 years old. This is where Gaia's “Golden Age of Peace” came from.

JP Mallory, In Search of the Indo-Europeans, says the earliest Aryan word for an authority figure is raj. As in Raja, region, regina, aregon. [sanskrit, english, latin, greek]. And he goes on to say that Raj was “a female tribal leader of great wisdom and mana.” And Gimbutas above, shows you their portraits in pottery and stone. These ladies were not fluff bunnies.

Archeologists since have taken modern forensic gear into obscure Transylvanian museums to look at the pollens and resins in the pots to see what they cooked up. They had some of the most powerful psychedelic potions the world has ever seen. They left us a large collection of what Gimbutas calls “Phallic Wands”, but Nicole, I've seen porn flicks, and I know dildos when I see them. The witches also cooked up lotsa potions for birth control and abortion.

Which is why the population was so stable and the parties were not often interrupted by women who were too pregnant to enjoy it. Other cultures have used violence at the hands of the warrior class to control men. They used sex, drugs, rock and roll.

I can see there have been a plethora of books recommended to you.  If our looking for something to truly inspire, The Travelers Gift by Andy Andrews is fantastic and breathtaking.  The Five People You Meet In Heaven by Mitch Album is a short and profound read as well.

There are such an amazing ray of great spiritual books, teaching books, how to books and I enjoy all those, however my favorite is to connect to a story and really learn from the experience being shown.

Good luck!
Nancy

It really depends on your likes/dislikes.  I really enjoy the FBI series by Catherine Coulter, the Valdemar series by Mercedes Lackey, the Belgriad and Mallorian by David Eddings, the Dragonrider series by Anne McCaffery and so many others.  The Harry Potter books are fun and the Twilight series is supposed to be good.  I have not stared them yet.

The problem I have with Rand, which I didnt realize til later, is that I've yet to see an idea she presented she didnt steal from Nietzsche. She got away with it cause the Nazis claimed him as a patron saint, so nobody read him to catch her at it.

Its a testament to the lack of scholarship on the part of the Liberal opponents of the Nazis, that they never read how Nietzsche called anti-Semites bufoons.

Re: Can anyone recommend any great books to me?

daybrown said Jul 24, 2008, 1:52 AM:

Rather than Rand, Nietzsche. In The Birth of Tragedy, he points out that whereas Dionysianism (eg typical Aryan religion) was based on works of theatre claiming allegorical truth, the Levantine religions were based on works of literature claiming literal truth.

And clearly, if you just dont get it, then the claims of literal truth are appealing. In The Genealogy of Morals, he comes to grips with the failure of readers to get where he was coming from in Zarathustra. Among many other things, he says that if you can not seize justice do without it. To have to ask for it results in what we now call exploiting victimhood.

He didnt say that God is dead. What he said was, and many here get it, The Levantine concept of god is dead.

Hey!

I recently read “Go Ask Alice” and it completely blew me away. I really like abnormal psychology books, and one's involving drug addiciton and downward spirals. Its sounds weird, but I'm really not weird. Definitely read it.
