Links from new textbox in Comments

1Vector3 said Dec 6, 2008, 8:50 PM:

I don't think this is the same as what Joshua just posted about. I noticed we have the new simplified-options textbox for blog comments, and the process of adding a hyperlink has become extremely cumbersome for me thereby. I seek wisdom about how it might possibly be improved, something I could change or do on my end.

I have popups blocked in IE7 as I am running around the Internet, with Gaia on several tabs as usual, haha. When in creating a blog comment I highlight some text and then click on the link icon in the comments textbox, I get a “Did you notice the information bar above?” little dialogue window, which I have to click on to make go away. Then I have to click on the little bar at the top, about scripted stuff. Then I have to click on the drop-down that says Temporarily allow scripted …whatevers.

Then I have to go back to the textbox and AGAIN click on the link icon. Then a little box is opened up by IE7 which allows me to paste in the URL, and then click the little box closed, and my text is finally a hyperlink.

Thass a lot of work !!!!!!!!

I suppose I could just change the popup blocker option, as I am on so few regular websites that have them…….

I suspect the devs who created the new text editor didn't realize this particular downstream effect. Any suggestions??

With extreme gratitude,
OM Bastet

Oh, I forgot to add. The hassle doesn't end there. Shortly thereafter I get a dialogue box that says something about an error occured, and do I want to continue to run scripts on this page. Then I have to click on that to make it go away…..

Blech.

Hi OM,

I'll have one of the devs take a look at this.  It shouldn't be a hassle!

Hi OM,

I'll ask Franc if there's a way to avoid that popup blocker message.  But you should only have to click it once, and thereafter it shouldn't bug you again.  Is that not the case?

I haven't gotten the other error you mentioned.  I'll keep at it.

Cheers!
Chris

Thanks for both of you for getting on it. That dialog box followed me onto the next 15 or 20 Gaia pages I went to !! It would appear and have to be appeased with a sacrifice of a chicken when I left the page or when I left the tab the page was on, not sure which. :)

I decided to just enable popups everywhere in Gaia, and that should solve the problem, especially as Gaia has no popups, haha. I didn't realize that blocking popups wasn't a blanket thing and could be abled and disabled on different URLs. For example, in typing this, I noticed the blocker was on, so I turned it off, and the turnoff said Enable popups always from pods.gaia.com.

But, still, you guys can probably find a tweak that would make life easier for those who don't figure out the popup blocker strategy…..

Thanks a bunch !!!!!

P.S. Ya know, the same thing is true with the bookmark links-in-toolbar thingy. I have to disable popups when starting to use that. Been that way for months.

Blessings, OM Bastet

As of last night when I last was on Gaia, each time I leave a Gaia page by closing that tab, the dialog box that says Internet Explorer Script Error appears. It always has the same Line number and character, but the URL listed is always the exact page I am trying to leave. It says Do you want to continue to allow scripted somethingorothers on this page, yes or no? Mostly I click yes. Then I have to also click the upper right corner x to get the box to go away.

I'm feeling stalked, haha.

I suspect this is some kind of IE thing I don't understand, not a Gaia thing.

It all started, remember, when I had popups blocked and trying to do a hyperlink in a blog comment textbox activated a thingy that I had to click on Temporarily Allow Scripts on this page, to get the hyperlink thingy to work.

That was days ago.

Any tricks, oh wizards?

Love and gratitude,
OM Bastet

Hey, OM

In IE, under Internet Options (in the Tools menu), on the Advanced tab, you might prefer these selections:

[x] Disable scribt debugging (Internet Explorer)
[ ] Display a notification about every script error

Meaning the top one is checked, and the bottom one isn't.

Only web developers need those settings toggled any other way.

Then those little annoying errors should go away.

Hope that helps!  Let me/us know?…

:)

I will try that, oh Wizard, because, further data, I tried creating a hyperlink in a photo comment textbox today with the new text editor, and with popups enabled on the page, and I still go a “Do you want to enable scripts on this page?” banner across the top of the page, and had to click “temporarily allow scripts…” and it's still happening from the last time, EVERY TIME I close out a Gaia page, I get the darn dialogue box about a script error on that page !!!! ARGH !!!!!!!

I guess I am curious why your hyperlink function triggers scripting alert for IE, but I'm not sure I would understand the relationship/explanation !!!

So will go do what you suggest, and report back.

Blessings upon your sweet head.

No dice, Chris. That's the way it has been set. The top one has two versions, one for Internet Explorer and the other for Other, those are checked, and the lower one you mentioned, is not checked.

So vat's next?

Very strange.  I assume you've looked through the rest of the options/settings for obvious things…

When the alerts come up, do you have an option to uncheck a box that says something like “show errors like this next time”?

Anything special installed on your IE, like a toolbar (which sometimes have their own blocking functions, that you have to tweak settings for)?

Thank you thank you for helping me with troubleshooting this, dear Chris !!!

I will look again for anything about scripts.

No, there is no option to show or not show the error message again. Here is what the whole dialog box says
Title of box: Internet Explorer Script Error
Content of box:
An error has occured in the script on this page.
Line 249 (original line number same in every case)
Char 1 (original, same in every case of this dialog box)
Error: Object required
Code: 0
URL (always the URL of the page I just clicked x on the tab to close out)
Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?
Yes No.

Here's my toolbar stuff:
Top blue line Gaia: Community that changes the World - Windows Internet Explorer
Next line back and fwd arrow, address field, refresh and x buttons, google search field
Next line says File Edit Favorites Tools Help
Next is the google toolbar, with a search field, gmail icon, popups blocker option, bookmarks thingy, and some other options like Find, Notebook — and “access features” and “change toolbar options” that I am scared to use now because they seem to disappear the File Edit menu bar whenever I even access them!
Next line has the favorites star, tabs, and some icons like Home, Rss feed icon, print icon, page icon, tools icon, Help, Skype and Messenger

Anything problematical in there? Any clues from the dialog box info?

Yeah, Meenakshi, I suppose I could try Firefox again. I just found it soooo non-intuitive and cumbersome…… But you're entitled to tch tch. It probably really is superior. I just don't have time for the learning curve. LOL !!!!

Blessings, Blissings,

Ok,

So, I know you said the checkboxes match what I typed above…  But still, can you try different combinations of those, to see if it gives any different result?  Those really should be the ones… and for some reason they're being ignored…

Will root around for more ideas…

I can't help but wonder whether this problem is related to the ones in the converstion about new blog comments text editor hyperlink function you are having with Janet and Ladybear concurrently, ~Matthew.

And Chris,
I do believe the popup blocker that wouldn't allow scripted windows in the first place is the trigger of the problem with the scripted windows thingy, but shifting to popups OK on the pages has not solved the problem.

And to compound the problem, I think that the scripted windows thingy is somehow “sludging” (technical word perhaps used incorrectly?) my CPU because it maxes out in iexplore.exe and then IE hangs, very often now. Never did before.

BTW the Google ads keyed to my gmail (trading relevance for privacy, IMO !!) tossed up an ad about a  program that purports to keep iexplore.exe from maxing out a CPU. Apparently this is not unknown. They used the word “sludge.” I will get an expert opinion before installing it, of course !!!!!

I have not played with the control panel options re scripts yet. I am having a generous local geek take a look at the problem later today….

Blessings and gratitude,

OM

This place purports to fix my “registry” problems  (which I have in Word Reader) and script problems and CPU usage problems (which has emerged recently as I mentioned earlier.) Does anyone reading this know anything about it? I would never download anything without an expert opinion. But Google ads did include their ad.

http://www.100-cpu-usage.com/100-cpu-usage.php?tid=SNR&gclid=CO2lpsDixZcCFQR1gwodZlqxRg

I didn't like that they did a popup on me when I tried to leave the page just now.

Update. Since I last turned on the computer I have not done anything to trigger the script error message, though I have obviously been on Gaia, and the CPU usage by iexplore.exe is running 88-99%, so I guess the problems are independent.

My processor speed is over 900 MHz, so that's why I am puzzled….

OK, I will be quiet now…

Yikes, OM.

Sorry to hear about the CPU thing.  Usually just needs a restart of the browser.

And the script to pop up the link is extremely simple, some of the simplest script possible, in fact.  So I'm pretty confident that it's unrelated to CPU.

Good luck with your local geek!

Update. IE7 just essentially stopped functioning for me. It was crashing unexpectedly at least once a day. It was slow to the point of ridiculousness, though some of that might have been the site here. But it really got unuseable yesterday so I switched yesterday to Google’s free Chrome browser. It is not hassle-free, but it’s quite useable. So the above problems are no longer plaguing me.

I still have IE and might try it again in the future…

And my CPU isn’t being maxed out anymore, either, hoooray, by the iexplore.exe thingy !!! But that problem actually had gotten better on its own, oddly enough.

Sending blessings, love, flowers, hugs, to you Chris and :franc and Ryan, and ~Matthew, and Siona, and everyone else working your butts off for us !!!
