We've moved!

Gaia Team said Jul 26, 2007, 5:33 PM:

Siona here!

I've posted a little note on the team blog about our transition. In short, we've spent the past day shuttling the site into our new digs at Engine Yard. We're looking forward to a much, much zippier Zaadz, but technology being what it is, we know it'll take a bit for the kinks to get ironed out and the site to shift into high gear.

So if you run into any problems over the next few days, please let us know here! We'll be keeping close tabs on this thread and equally close tabs on our new cluster, and we appreciate both your help and your patience with the migration.

Anything? Anyone? We're at the ready! :)

Update: Mail and search are still a bit slow, but we're working with the database queries we're getting and will be getting them up to speed with the rest of the site by this afternoon. Hang in there, and thanks again for all your help!

Very cool!  The site does seem faster now.  Nice work! :-D

I noticed a couple small glitches with pods.  The webchat link seems to be missing on every pod.

And, on my own pod, when you hover the mouse over the “admin” link, a link reading Comment_yellow Donations & Microdonations for Individuals & Groups webchat pod details manage members manage boards all files add a file   appears below, instead of the shortcuts to a few admin control pages.

Fortunately, if you click the “admin” link, it's still possible to reach the admin control center for your pod.

Best wishes,
Apollia

We've removed IM and webchat for the moment while we continue to tune the servers and figure out what we want to do with these features. I'll post an update here on their status when we make a decision.

As far as the link, we'll get that fixed pronto.

have you guys thought of composing a mass email that tells people how to deal with the cache problems that stop computers from recognizing the new IP and sending it out to them so it's in their regular inbox?

Great suggestion, Julian. I'll send out a newsletter tomorrow about the update. I'm pretty sure that after a certain period of time those caching issues will resolve themselves; I can't imagine that any would take more than 12 to 24 hours to update. But I'll check with our more technologically savvy dev team to find out, and if necessary, will include a note on the IP issues.

Big hugs, and bigger thanks,

I hope that the problems you experienced yesterday have been fully (or at least mostly!) resolved by now. We put in place a system yesterday afternoon that funnels any traffic still hitting our old servers to the new, so regardless of IP issues most people should be able to see the site.

Also, we've cleared up a majority of the speed issues we faced yesterday. There may be an occasional hiccup or slowdown over the next day or so but nothing like yesterday's problems.

We're tracking the other bugs and oddities that people have reported here and will be fixing them as quickly as we can.

Thanks again for your patience as the dust settles! :)

When the house is being painted we change many things as well. Zaadz is getting renovated and it shall be a good change to make the site a bit faster also. With improving technology and available increasing internet speeds  the progamming codes and resulting facilities are also increasing. I have a broadband connection, but then also sometimes I face difficulty in sending messages due to 'heavy' input screen for sending messages. I think it shall be a good idea to give two options for that. We should be able to send message in 'plain text' format screen, which shall be quite faster even on a dial up connection and the standard input screen which zaadz is using already. I hope it will speed us the communication on the zaadz.

I had a world of trouble logging in. The first time the 'done' message appeared at the bottom of the page, but it wouldn't move off the sign-in page and the corner message was still “log in.” And all that took a long cuber time not to happen.

Second time was very similar but got a 'done, but with errors on page' message and it took even longer.

Then I got off line altogether and came back in. Logging on still took a long time, but it finally worked.

PS: I signed up for ZPro what seems like ages ago….I don't mind waiting, ever, but I sort of feel like I could have disappeared. The occasional pat on the back might be a good thing for those of us on the waiting list.

Thanks! (It's a great place to be.)

And about zPro! If all goes as planned we'll be upgrading all those interested to the micro-communities at some point toward the end of next week. As ~Matthew wrote above, we've taken the newsletter portion back to the shop for the time being with plans to add the feature later on. But the micro-communties will be available soon, and, well, we think you'll have fun. :)

Noticed a couple more glitches.  Since the move, I've gotten many Zaadz mails, but only one notification by email, for only one message.

And, a person I sent a pod invitation to is listed on the Member Management page, but every time I load that page, it says the person visited “less than a minute ago” (but they're not even online).  They also aren't on the main list of members, and I never got a notification that they joined. (_if_ they joined, but I don't think they did - but I could be wrong).

Hope that helps. :)

Hi folks,

FYI:  While showing my niece the invite email I previouly sent her, I ended up changing my zaadz address and profile nickname.  I changed it back to my former zaadz address and ended up having my join date changed.  I received the auto-welcome email twice from zaadz and some (not that I mind being welcomed!), but it might get a little confusing if profiles can easily be changed like that.

Also, pods invites I received automatically added me in as a member.  It took me a while to find out how to delete the said pods in my list (I remember seeing a handy button to do this, but it wasn't there now).

Other than that, Zaadz's looking good!  Thanks for all the hard work!

I’m not entirely sure this is a glitch, but it seems like a very odd thing to do by mistake:

Amusingly, the resulting thread title was oddly appropriate, but it was not what I intended.

Hi:

About an hour ago (maybe a bit less) while I was on a pod and moving between web-pages, all of a sudden I got “404, Page =Not Found” for a page I had bookmarked (my own Profile).  Odd, so I closed the browser, and for almost the next hour (til I got here) I couldn't get into Zaadz at all.

This is the third time in as many days that this has happened.  Kinda scary!!!

I'm using IE 7 (latest version), on PC, running XP SP2, if that helps at all.

Is this just because of the “dust settling” STS?

I haven't really noticed any improvement on page load speed, but I'm thinking it might be related more to my ISP than what's happening on Zaadz.  Day-time speed around here is terrible.

Hoping I don't get any more Error 404's……  I've grown attached to this place!

Cheers!

Those ugly 404 messages are the result of our servers “getting their wires cross”, metaphorically speaking. They were happening when we were trying to fix issues on the site, and we've learned what the cause was and addressed it. This should be a thing of the past. Sorry!

Re: We've moved!

Ryan said Jul 28, 2007, 2:18 PM:

Hello Gem!

The 404s you speak of a couple of hours ago were a result of me(!) inadvertantly taking the site down. And it was scary for me too ;)

I’m so sorry for your troubles (and everyones) but please do not give up on us yet - 404s should be few (if ever) from now on. The worst of the hiccups are behind us and now our focus is on improving performance, so that in spite of a the glitches and my slip-ups, we will all say it was worth the effort.

Some pages have indeed not sped up at all, and some are inconsistent - and we are working on that. So while it could be your slower day-time speed, it could also be certain pages here on Zaadz. E.g. discussion board pages like this definitely need some improvements.

So thank you for your patience and let us/me know of any other concerns or comments!

Hate to throw new things at y’all, but was wondering if you could do something with the whistles and bells (such as bold, italic, hyperlinks, colors, etc.) for those of us using Mac computers, with Safari browsers.

I’ve used HTML coding for the entire time I’ve been on Zaadz – and discovered I could drop in through Netscape and find some of your “design” options available. However there are other issues with doing that – where the line breaks are all messed up every time I perform a new edit (getting odd “widows” – ya know, short lines breaks, dropping down to another line) just because it lined up that new way in the editing window of the text. And the text sizes change on their own from what I had coming from Safari to Netscape. I’m throwing my hands up at this point to get any edits done, as what I had neatly aranged in edit mode for *my* recognition is no longer recognizable – it’s all run together and resembles the Matrix code. It’s really a drag having to type in/copy all the HTML code for hyperlink references and all that stuff.

I hope you can one day soon help us Mac people out here. Thanks so much and good luck with all the wrestling around you’re having to go through.

However…when emailing Zaadzters there are still none of these options for bold, italic, hyperlinks, etc. as there are in editing our profiles. What’s up with that?!?

Tony, I just tested this to make sure, when using firefox on a mac you really should have the options for bold/italic etc available on the compose zmail page.

could you please try again and confirm that these options do not show up? make sure the page finishes loading, and that javascript is turned on for your browser (which is safe to assume it is as you do see the editor when creating blogs)

Hi Paul,

the done symbol with error sounds like it could be a javascript/browser issue; what browser are you using?

I saw that you had multiple notifications setup for some of the pods you belong to. I removed the duplicates, so you shouldn't be getting those anymore. (let me know if you still do though, and i'll figure it out)

the 404 error was probably due to a hiccup on our server at the time. These hiccups shouldn't be occuring anymore, so let me know if you see this happening again.

Thanks for the feedback,

Hi, franc i am enamored at the unity of helping others throughout zaadz.   I'm so pleased to finally find a web site that resonates with me.
1. I'm using windows internet explorer 7

 2. Yes, this morning I had thirty two emails in my outlook express home mail, and I'm in the process of deleting the duplicts.  It's a bit frustrating because i have to read each notice twice and then delete.  And it has become confusing on what is what.  I think i will go into my account and unchecked all notices - save - and check news letters and see what happens.  If you can rectify this problem it would be most appreciated.  and on my part i will go and “reboot” all my notifications.
what is the difference between, individually and newsletter? should i just have newsletter check instead of individually.
I love the notifications, and find it to be a great program and I'm sure we will be able to get it configured properly.
thank you so much for your help!

Could you let us know what operating system (sounds like a PC running Windows?) and what browser you're using, and a bit more about the error message so that the dev team can have a look?

Thanks hugely, and with any luck we'll sort this out soon.

Hi there
Braveheart here
When do think the chat feature might be up and running again as I feel it is the most important feature on zaadz. I wouldn,t have met the people I have without it and now I cant talk to them about important spiritual issues

Keep up the good work

Hi Braveheart,

we're investigating some other options for the zIM feature.
In the meantime I suggest sending zMail to these users and then organizing to chat via IRC, gtalk, MSN messenger Live or skype.

Hmmm…   May have something to do with the move, as it seems to be working for all the heroes and teacher I had entered previously to that, but I'm not sure what the issue is.  I'll inform the dev. team.

thanks!

Hi Gabriel,

If the person embedding the link doesn't include the http:// it won't work.
