Edit Icons visable to others on my Profile Page

Hi

I'm using Windows XP Media Center Edition, Version 2002, Service Pack 3.

I noticed, whether I'm logged in or not, there are edit icons visable and active on my profile page.  And oddly, they're also visable and active on my friend Balder profile page, which would allow me to edit his profile.  I fear others can edit either of our profiles.  I notified him about this.

Not sure why this is happening.

I just wanted to add, I also notice I can edit my friend CLeo. profile page too.  All the edit icons appear and are active there.

Also I neglected to mention I was Using Explorer v. 7.0.5730.13

Hey David, thanks for the report, very weird!  It's a brand new feature, so this is the first we're seeing.  We've got a solution we're putting up shortly.  But please know:

You can't edit another person's profile, even with this bug.

It will change values on your profile only.  (Trust us, we tried it :)

It's just a caching issue – but please know that one person can't change another's profile. 

Really sorry for the headache, and will have a fix immediately.

ok, i accidentally clicked the button that you guys are talking about and now those edit icons won't go away on my profile page.

how do you make them go away?

Ok, should be back to normal now.  Should only see profile icons on your own profile page (and only when logged in).

Hi ~Matt & Chris,  :-)

Before w/o the flag to add, find resonance, if we left something blank, like books or movies,
it disappeared. now it shows as a blank box.
Will we be able to delete it totally at some point instead of seeing a blank box?

Why do we need a second option for editing?  The icons are just a hindrance then a convenience and they are an eye sore.  I have to now avoid those edit icons so I do not mess up my profile page.  Can we please have the option to turn them off?

I agree, we don't need two methods.

This particular method has been asked for across the board - especially a quick way to edit your About Me area.  But especially ways to get things done on the page, rather than navigating away.  So we may end up making this the default way of editing a profile. 

If we do stick with two methods, certainly I'll try to find time to make an optional setting.  And will try to make them less of an eyesore :)

Thanks for the reply Chris.  I'm sure all you/dev team adding these links  is in the best interest of Gaia.  Maybe this is just the beginning of a process to help simplify things.

It isn't to bad knowing only I can see the edit links and possibly have the option to not see them.

Hey Lb, how's life?

The empty areas will still show up blank for visitors to your page.  Like I see you don't have a Books section.  But when you're on your own page, you'll have a chance to fill in anything you care to. 

Really hope this isn't obtrusive, after a day or two of getting used to it.  This is just really the way people want to interact with web pages… in place, rather than trying to find a link to match what they want to do, navigating through odd pages… you know? 

If it's the icons themselves that are distracting, another way is to just use a text button, that literally says something like 'edit'… but that becomes even more “cluttersome” (I've tried it).

I tried to push the icons way out of the way.  I played with making them smaller, but it makes them harder to click (esp for some folks). 

Please keep the input coming, tho.  We talk a lot in house about things like this - and frequently.

I'm happy the little icons aren't roll over activated!

The icons aren't bad, we'll get use to them.
anytime anything new is added, it takes time to adjust.
i'd rather have an icon then text.

Just noticed a bug,

I click the flag to add something,
it posts ok, but then if I leave and go back the change isn't there anymore.

But I just went in to “update my profile” the old way, and the words I added
are showing there in text, but not on my profile page.

That's weird!  Just added a couple things myself, this morning, and so far so good.  If you get a second today, mind trying it again and seeing if you can recreate the problem?  If so, let me know which fields aren't working.

It's actually using the exact same parts from the full update page, so if only one of the two worked, then yikes.

Still buggin!
I clicked the flag, saw the text of what i added in music and heroes, click done.
and it's there.
go away from profile, clear cache, return and it's not there.
it's there in the text, but not showing on the profile.

i.e. in music i added the word Joni at the end for Joni Mitchell.
it's in text, not showing on profile in FF or Netscape

Do we still lose a seed every time we edit using this method - even if we, say, delete one interest and add two?  When I saw these, I thought it might be a way designed to let us add stuff without losing any - in other words, the suggestion that adding to our profiles is a benefit to (us and) the community.

I kinda like the little icons; they remind me to look at my sections once in a while and add to them.  They're much cuter than a text button and yes, less distracting!

Hey, Chris, I thought the following problem got fixed awhile back, but it's still here for me !!! (I think I mentioned it ages ago, and others did too, but I can't recall where, and this was the nearest quickest relevant thread I could find….)

I went to edit the About Me section of my profile for the first time in many weeks and the first click on the little icon did nothing but make the print look funny. Then I clicked again, and got the text box, but it had the HTML visible, so is really challenging for me to edit. (All other text boxes on the site work normally for me.)

Then when I clicked done, IE7 or Windows or somebody thought I wanted to download something. And the changes I did make, just entering of new text, never did get posted.

Whazzup ????

Hmmm. But then I went to the old way, Edit My Profile, and the new text showed up in the textbox there, so when I clicked on post or save or whatever it says at the bottom of that page, the new stuff posted.

Just tried the process again with the little edit icon in the About Me section, and it all worked nominally. sigh.

But the print in the profile looks kinda dark and glowy and blurry…..

I'll check out the About Me/HTML problem - javascript is tough so I'll need a block of time, which I should have when the next thing goes out the door (a week or so).  Yah?

Thanks for your everlasting patience :)  We've been mopping up bugs like crazy in the last couple months, and things are running better now than they ever have, if you believe that!
