E-Mail Notifications

I haven't been getting any e-mail notifications (from my groups, threads I've posted to, messages, grapevine posts, etc.) since Wednesday (maybe even Tuesday night).  Is it just me, or is this a system-wide problem?  Is it being worked on?

Same here. Can't tell when they stopped but I received at least one PM and two shout-outs today that I wasn't notified of. :(

Yes, it's system-wide, and the result of a problem with the notification queries due to the server change late last night. We'll get them out shortly!

Same here but it's been even stranger..I just had the Mail Server Dump on me.
I've changed my settings and will see if that helps. It's been acting strange for about 5 days now.  See my Gmail screen dump with times. I had archived all of these and they just flew back all at once. Giggle

Hi Tely!

You should have received them by now - in fact 6 in just the past hour according to our records.  If nothing comes in next day then something is definitely up, somewhere, but we'll figure it out I'm sure.  Regardless, sorry for your troubles :/

They are getting sent out regularly right now with maybe 1 in 300 being delayed more than a few minutes(could be hours for that 1 tho ;) , and next week we'll get it working so that none are.

Thanx for your response, Ryan.  I still haven't gotten anything.  The last e-mail notification I got from Gaia was Tuesday (the 9th) at 4pm.  So please officially consider this “broken” and do your magic ASAP!  :-)

Every indication (well, on this end, clearly not on yours heh) is that the emails are leaving our server as expected.  I even changed the email address of one of your notifications to mine and sent it - it came in fine.  It's still possible that we have a problem (beyond the delay) here, but can you check your spam box to be sure that is not what is happening ?

Hi, Ryan!  Just checked my spam box, and no Gaia e-mail there.  And of course, still nothing from Gaia in my regular inbox since Tuesday at 4pm.  :-(  And I'm getting other e-mails from outside-of-Gaia people, so I know my e-mail server isn't messed up.  Any idea what else could be happening?

Update: I just received one notification about a comment on a blog I've also commented on. Still wasn't notified of two PMs I received hours ago (or of having posted the previous entry on this thread). So maybe the notifications are just delayed again…

Hi!

Quick update

There were three primary reasons for the email delays, and two of them we believe are behind us

1) Notifications getting stuck in a 'locked' position preventing them from being sent before manually unlocking.  We have every reason to believe the fix we implemented early this afternoon has worked here - no more 'loccked' notifications that result in the delay email

2) Our new mail server getting overwhelmed and shutting down.  This is what happened yesterday, resulting no email at all getting out for perhaps 12 hours. Once that was fixed, it took several more hours to get those out.

3) Email providers bouncing email or marking as spam. This happens for a number of reasons, has always been somewhat of a problem - however the great team at our new hosting provider the Blue Box Group have already helped us with this and we will continue to make progress here.

However, so soon after I move it's always possible more complications will arise :/

Hi, Ryan!  In case this information is helpful, I havn't gotten a single Gaia e-mail since Tuesday, June 9th at 4pm.  I've checked my spam folder, and it's not there, either.  Thanks for your continued efforts with this hairy problem.  :-)

After I had received notifications for a few days (first late then right away although some never made it to my regular account, I found them in my spam folder the other day), they stopped altogether on Saturday. Just to keep you posted.

Mine came through yesterday like a champagne cork unplugged - BAM!  I must have had 100 email notifications.  I believe Sandi mentioned that the same thing happened in her email.  My email has been fine today.

Geez – intermittent is sounding pretty good to me!  I still haven't gotten any Gaia e-mail since Tuesday, June 9th at 4pm.  I don't know if these are two separate problems (the intermittent and the not-at-all) or if they're just branches of the same problem.

Friday 6/26.  I used to receive notices in my Gmail if anyone posted ANYTHING related to me, a Grapevine, Q&R, inbox message, reply to a post / thread in a group, etc.  Now, I only get notified about inbox messages, and those notices are coming to my Gmail at least a day later.

Hi Kathy,

so, the first thing I need to know is if any of your notification settings have changed (whether you changed them or not).  Can you go into your settings and make sure that they all point to your e-mail address and that you are set to receive them individually?

As for the bottleneck, we're working on solutions… We're also looking at bounces.  But that stuff should be sorted out soon.  Just another side-effect of switching servers.

Hi Matthew,

Several months ago, I messed around with the settings function.  Later, I wanted to un-do some of those choices (and thought I did), but was told that some areas were still invisible to others.  I don't think I specifically changed notification settings, but who knows….At any rate, this was several months ago, whereas the problem I've referred to has been more recent.

Matthew, can you do me a huge favor and adjust ALL my settings to Gaia's original defaults?   I get confused about the wording and don't know whether I'm turning a setting off or on.  If you need my email address or password to do this, I'll gladly give them to you.

I need help with this because I was just invited to be a moderator in One Light Many Windows.  Not only are notifications important, but other folks' ability to view the summary of my activities on Gaia (whether members or not).

I didn't get a notification that you replied to me here.  Ladybear sent a message to my Gaia inbox, alerting me to please respond to you.

I've helped Kathy and reset her notifications.
They had all been shut off to NEVER. I remember that happened to me
once or twice w/o messing with it. Could of happened in the server move.
Should be fixed now.

Another user told me he had also discovered this had happened to his settings…
I think it was yesterday.

So it's always a good idea to check that I guess if notifications suddenly stop arriving!

Hi, I am also having trouble with receiving e-mail notifications.  I've set my e-mail notifcations to individual for grapevine, Gaia e-mail, entry comments - everything for which you can a notifcation.

I'm receiving sporadic e-mail notifications as in 1 out of 10.  For example, on the same blog entry, I received a notification for one comment and none for the other comments on the same entry.  Even stranger, for the 1 notification I do receive, I receive it in duplicate e-mails.

I haven't altered my settings; they each say individual notification.  Please help!  I am missing quite a lot :)

This afternoon, I received 10 e-mail notifications:  2 each of 5 comments from the past few days.  However, they continue to be sporadic as notifications for each comment and grapevine note are still not coming.  For example, I received notifications of only one person's comments on a thread of over 25 comments.

Thanks.  Just a note: as of today, I'm getting about 3/4 of notifications.  And, I'm receiving 90% duplicates to 10% quadruples of about 1/4 of the ones I am receiving.

Something has changed. I just received my first (in a long time) Notification of friends' Recent Activities. It use to fly in my inbox like clock work at one minuet after midnight.
I'm just glad to see it again. Keep up the great work, it's appreciated

I'm sure there is a lot of work to do in resolving the myriad of glitches here and there that come along with running a site.  Duplicates and quadruples are better than none!  I just wanted to let you know what was happening, in the event knowing some details might help you determine a core glitch issue :)

Matthew, just to update you, I got a “@gaia.com” e-mail account, and this past weekend, I changed my settings to reflect that as my primary e-mail address, and I re-checked my e-mail notification settings to make sure they were still on.  But even so, I still haven't gotten a single e-mail from Gaia (either to my former Earthlink e-mail address or to my new Gaia e-mail address) since Tuesday, June 9th at 4pm.  Help!

Hi Tely,

I think you still need to set each of the individual notifications to be sent to the new address that you've added.  Setting it as primary doesn't change where the old notifications are sent.  Just future notifications.  So, check in your settings and let me know if you're still having an issue once you've made sure the notifications are being sent to your new @gaia address!

Tely, I checked your account, and yes, that was the issue.  The notifications were still set to go to your old e-mail.  I just switched them over for you to come to your new @gaia account.  So, from now you should be receiving them.  Let me know if you are not!

An update to the e-mail notification problem …

I seem to be getting notifications, but when I get a “There is a new post on a discussion thread you have also posted on” e-mail, that e-mail is always duplicated (in other words, I get an e-mail notification about the post on a group I belong to as well as 2 “There is a new post on a discussion thread you have also posted on” e-mails, totalling 3 e-mails).

In one of my groups, the Integral Pod, when someone starts a new thread, rather than getting the notification for that, I get a “There is a new post on a discussion thread you have also posted on” notification, even if I haven't posted on the thread.

This is what I've noticed so far.  I hope it helps you in resolving the glitches.

the wording has always been unlike the reality on those notifs, Tely.:)

but here's part of what you might be talking about in the first paragraph: The notif of posts on threads you have posted to is like a compendium of all the activity in threads you really have posted to, that day, in every group you posted in. It includes all your own posts of the day, so is very precious as a record and resource. I save them all.

But then if you are on notifs of groups, then there will be duplicates of your own posts and the posts on threads you have posted on. This time they are grouped by group, not multi-group as the above notif. is. This all makes sense to me, and is fine. It's mostly fine because the description lies, and there are actually posts from threads you have NOT posted to, but I never figured out whether it's all the new posts for that group for that day, which would of course be useful. I think it is. 

I can't figure out which is the 3rd email you are describing…..

Hi, OM!  Yes, I'm familiar with both of those types of e-mails, and before the e-mail notification started malfunctioning, I received both, which means that when I posted to a group discussion, I would receive two notifications:  one from the group, and the other saying “There is a new post on a discussion thread you have also posted on.”  But now I'm getting one from the group and two saying “There is a new post on a discussion thread you have also posted on,” totaling 3 e-mail notifications for each such post.
What's more, on at least one group (the Integral Pod), instead of getting notified when someone starts a new discussion, I'm getting a “There is a new post on a discussion thread you have also posted on,” even if I haven't posted on that thread yet.
The information you gave is correct for when the e-mail notification is working properly, but the situations I'm describing are showing that it's not working the way you described – it's malfunctioning.  I hope I've described it clearly enough for the tech people to be able to understand.

I guess I am jumping in late, but I have had no notifications of any kind for about a month (or two). Should I be checking somewhere at Gaia to see if the notifications got turned off somehow?

My last direct notifications were between 5/21 and 6/8. I did discover a lot of comments on photos and blogs that I was not aware of since that time. Even direct messages don't get a notification anymore.

You can switch your e-mail address on the site, if you'd like.  You would just need to add a new e-mail address to your account and then adjust your notification settings.

Hi Gia,

You should be receiving notifications from us.  If you want, I can check a specific one to see if we've sent it, but if we have then the issue would be a filter on your e-mail ISP's side.  We are trying to resolve all issues with being blocked by certain carriers, but there are still some we have not gotten the green light from yet.  If you have a gmail account, I'd suggest using that until things get straightened out with your particular carrier.  Also, make sure you have us on your safe list and check your spam filters for our messages.

My apologies for any dissatisfaction you may be feeling.

We've been having trouble with both Comcast and Earthlink; despite all my conversations with both ISPs, they're still blocking many, if not all, of the emails that come from Gaia. They might take concerns from their customers more seriously, though, so I'd very very very much encourage you writing and letting them know your mail is not getting through. :)

OK, it seems that Tom has solved the Earthlink problem.  Thank you, Tom!  Can anyone with an Earthlink e-mail address confirm or disconfirm this – are you getting notifications now?
