Juke Box Love Song

Langston Hughes

I could take the Harlem night

and wrap around you,

Take the neon lights and make a crown,

Take the Lenox Avenue busses,

Taxis, subways,

And for your love song tone their rumble down.

Take Harlem's heartbeat,

Make a drumbeat,

Put it on a record, let it whirl,

And while we listen to it play,

Dance with you till day–

Dance with you, my sweet brown Harlem girl.

1950

Dream Boogie

Langston Hughes

Good morning, daddy!

Ain't you heard

The boogie-woogie rumble

Of a dream deferred?

Listen closely:

You'll hear their feet

Beating out and beating out a –

You think

It's a happy beat?

Listen to it closely:

Ain't you heard

something underneath

like a –

What did I say?

Sure,

I'm happy!

Take it away!

Hey, pop!

Re-bop!

Mop!

Y-e-a-h!

1951

Trumpet Player

Langston Hughes

The Negro

With the trumpet at his lips

Has dark moons of weariness

Beneath his eyes

where the smoldering memory

of slave ships

Blazed to the crack of whips

about thighs

The negro

with the trumpet at his lips

has a head of vibrant hair

tamed down,

patent-leathered now

until it gleams

like jet–

were jet a crown

the music

from the trumpet at his lips

is honey

mixed with liquid fire

the rhythm

from the trumpet at his lips

is ecstasy

distilled from old desire–

Desire

that is longing for the moon

where the moonlight's but a spotlight

in his eyes,

desire

that is longing for the sea

where the sea's a bar-glass

sucker size

The Negro

with the trumpet at his lips

whose jacket

Has a fine one-button roll,

does not know

upon what riff the music slips

It's hypodermic needle

to his soul

but softly

as the tune comes from his throat

trouble

mellows to a golden note

And now for a brief carnival history of Italian colored socks! (Thanks, Loriann!)

So put on your most colorful socks (perhaps sock of your crayon color from Dave's epic crayon post?), and enjoy the show. :)

Compagnie della Calza  (“Trouser Club”)

The Compagnie della Calza companies were young Venetian noblemen who organized the spectacular Venetian life between the XV and XVI century.

Two companions of the Brothers Zardinieri Le Compagnie della Calza were born around the middle of the fifteenth century Venice where controllarono and organized performances citizens. Every year at carnival every company of sock organized a series of shows reserved for the Venetian nobility in which were used (at the expense of the company) famous buffoons time, but also real theatrical even with the presence of famous authors Beolco as Angelo said Ruzante and Pietro Aretino.

The various companies had names of imagination is inspired by virtue such as those
of Floridi, U.S., and Arrange; others traevano inspiration from trades like the Ortolani and Zardinieri. The companies are distinguished for colored socks the color of the company and complicated embroidery that recall the name of the company itself. As part of Vittore Carpaccio The departure of the engaged which is part of the cycle of Sant'Orsola, one sees clearly the complicated embroidery with the initials F. [ratelli] Z. [ardinieri] on the left sleeve of one of the two.

Bollywood is the term for a film industry in India where the movies are long and have several dance and song segments juxtaposed in the course of the film. Usually there will be about 6 segments of this dance and song routines. We have to have scenes from a French Mardi Gras. I am preparing one now for scenes from Philippines Mardi Gras so come back again and keep posting and have fun.

(Random fact of the day: My first dorm room was in a building at Sonoma State University called “Merlot,” in “Cabernet Village.” The next year I was in “Fume Blanc” in “Sauvignon Village.”You know you're at a good school when the dorms are named after wines.

The Largest Winter Carnival in the World

Since the beginning of our French colony, the habitants of New France created a rowdy tradition of getting together just before Lent to eat, drink and be merry. At this time, this intense period of revelry was already designated as the Carnival - a word of Italian origin meaning Mardi Gras. The custom of celebrating from the end of January until mid-February has long been popular.

The first large winter Carnival in Québec City, the world's snow capital, took place in 1894. Often faced with winter's hardships, the city's population reinvented this popular tradition with a winter celebration that warmed up the hearts of all of it revellers. Interrupted by two wars, then the economic crisis of 1929, the Carnival was held sporadically until the second half of the century. In 1954, in the context of the economic development of the Old Capital, a group of business people re-launched the festivities. That year, Bonhomme was born and elected the event's representative. The first official edition of the Québec Winter Carnival took place in 1955. The Carnival snowballed into an undeniable manifestation for the entire Québec City population, and was an important vehicle for tourism and economical activity in the city.

From one winter to the next, the Carnival enriched its activity program. We have since added even more popular activities, such as winter sports, snow sculptures, and activities based on the traditional Québec lifestyle, such as canoe races and dogsled races. The Québec Carnival is the largest winter carnival in the world today, and is third on the List of Top Carnivals after the famous carnivals in Rio and New Orleans.

Great posts from everyone!!!  I am so happy.  Nicole I did not know that is your heritage so as Ariela.  Have fun all Paul, Sherri, Jenna, Loriann, and everybody.  Let's make this a wiki, a collaborative collection of Mardi Gras, Festivals, Fiestas, Carnivals, Carnavals, Circus from around the world.  Ok friends, you may think I am not here but I am preparing for some more stuff to post for everybody.  Here is some Filipino style food.  My Philippine Fiesta, Phillipines Mardi Gras will be coming soon.

Ooh yum.

Let's make Loriann smile even more by furthering our international adventure… Let's travel a little more Eastward, shall we?

….To Japan's Asakusa Samba Carnival!

Let's keep it colorful now:

Here's a little red for you all
We could always use more rainbows
And some gorgeous flowing white with a tiny bit of blue

…and OK, someone here HAS to get THIS costume!

(And now it's my turn to ask: how can you directly paste pictures here? I should know this by now… )

These pictures are taken from the net arranged by me in a slide show.  These are pictures of Filipino Mardi Gras and Fiestas from the Philippines, the land of my birth.  For the most part, a patron saint is always venerated in fiestas as in the case of Santo Nino (baby Jesus).

Oktoberfests! Awww, that takes me back to when I was a girl. My grandma used to take my sister and I to one every since, since we're part German.

Those were the days. It'll be nice to go back to one now, now that I'm older than 21.

Ah yes, Oktoberfests in Michigan, those were the days indeed.

I grew up about a mile and a half outside of Frankenmuth, which had the largest German American contigent inside the United States.  All of us kids wanted to work at the famous Bavarian Inn, the best job in the area, especially summers.  I even learned to dance the polka at one of those accordion events!

Remind me to tell you, Jenna, about my 21st birthday party sometime…  Oh the humanity!

Wukkin up!

Appropriate Trinidadian music that was introduced first in Barbados for our Carnival last year. Great fusion!
