Welcome John! I'm so glad you're here to play with us.

Haiku is a fun place to hang out. As you've probably seen, the NEH is the most active part of the Pod. Sometimes, it's a virtual frenzy of activity.

Another interesting, though not as active section, is the Philospirituasophical Haiku Thread where you can post some Sacred Text of your choice, and then post the haiku it inspires.

Look around, read some stuff and join right in.

Welcome to Haiku! We have a lot of fun here. Nice job on your novice haiku:-)

I'm not sure about the posting of your profile either, but we seem to do a lot of hyper linking, particularly on the NEH (Never Ending Haiku) threads. So I'll just give the little tutorial on that as the easiest way to handle it.

Highlight a bit of text, which activates the link option on the bar above. Click the link (looks like a little bit of chain link). This opens the Insert Link box with 3 parts. In the top part paste the URL, i.e. in this case the address of your profile page. In the middle line "target" choose open in new window. In the bottom line you can title the link, i.e. "My Profile". Then hit insert, and Voila`! you have just hyper-linked your profile. (of course, anyone could just click on your icon to get to the profile page too, but hyper linking is fun, especially in linking videos to some of the haiku threads)

Enough of tutorials, though. Thanks for joining our Pod. NEH is the most active part and it's very fun to link our poetry together in a themed manner.

Look around at the other discussion threads as well for places to post your poetry and that of others who you would like to share.

I'm new to this group and was drawn to it because I love poetry. I like to write in general, but Haikus have always intrigued me in a way. They have their own essence to them. They can hold their own in the short and sweet version, or they can tell a story in the continuing fashion.

Hello,

I have never yet read a haiku, but I always like to learn and try new things. I mostly just want to hear what others have to say. I am more of a visual person, but I want to learn how to write so much that I am actually going to school for it. I am an English major. My empasis is in creative writing. I have only finished a couple of stories. Mostly, I just write to save flashes of the ideas in my mind so that I can preserve my creative memories. I really haven't learned how to turn these flashes into stories, but I am learning. Enough about me...I am open to new friends. If anyone wants to share, I know how to listen.

I am just now seeing this post. I can see from the date that it came only 6 days before my mother died so things have been in a bit of a whirlwind from a little before as well as still ongoing after that event. I appreciate your providing me the reference on Kerouac and I am glad the framework here is that the essence is the thing rather than superficial structures,

David: You know that I am President of your Haiku by David fan club. You have a great gift for this form, and I am so grateful that you share your work here. IN terms of your interest in music, come check in to what I am doing in my blog with the DANCE! feature - very eclectic, but themed with the idea of music that makes me want to move, and that I hope will get GAIA folks dancing for at least a few minutes a day. Love all of your choices listed for rock groups, Toto, Journey, Asia. Come by and add a Comment and share some specific favorites...:) And thanks for mentioning Kerouac's "Scattered Poems." He is such a genius, and really redefined haiku and the short poem form for Westerners. When I first read his poetry, it was a revelation.

I am a writer, and saying that I love to read is something of an understatement. I do believe very strongly in the power of the written word, namely as a way to help others, as well as help myself. For a very long time I was unable to write anything that was publishable (or even readable) due to some unpleasant things that were going on in my life (pretty much me making bad choices), so today I am grateful for the opportunities that I have to pursue my passion for both reading and writing.

Some "Professional" Background: I am a BA in Theater from University of Central Florida (Class of 2000), where worked both on and off stage in varying capacity's, from actor to usher to props to set construction, although my main desire was to be a playwright and screenwriter. I have also written poetry, some of which I have posted on for Gaia Community, and I fell in love with the Haiku form during my time at UCF, after reading "Scattered Poems" by Jack Kerouac. I have read Haiku by both Eastern and Western authors, and have written some myself, and I hope to develop and also help bring attention to this very spiritual form of literature.
I also love music, which has led to to songwriting (which I'm also starting to pursue again). My main focus is Rock, namely band's such as TOTO, Journey, Survivor, Asia, Kansas but right now I'm trying to go to absolute basics (A few chords, simple lyrics: not the 20 minute progressive rock epics I was attempting). I also play keyboards/synthesizers and love to make "weird" sounds, and I play percussion as well.
I do admit that I have tried to do the "9 to 5" corporate thing and found it to be a very unpleasant experience, and I want more out of life than a cubicle and a paycheck (even a relatively large one). If I could get paid to write (even copy-writing), that would be great. But I'm still learning who I am as a person.

New Friends are always welcomed. And I do wish to (finally) post some pictures as well (procrastination is something I need to work on letting go of).

      Here is some of My music. It is free to download or stream if You like. Freely it was given to Me, so please freely recieve. If it makes You feel great and You want to keep that feeling.....,give it away. That's the only way I have figured out how to keep anything real.

   What do I play? I specialize in Indigenous intruments from all over the World. Most notably Flutes. I really Love Native American Flutes for their pithy, hollow, almost Human quality. I also play Peruvian Quenas or Quenachos. It is a bamboo reed Flute that seems to be South America's answer to the Japanese Shakuhachi which I also play. Although I find the Soulfulness of the Shakuhachi, when in the hands of a Master, has no equal. I have also been caught performing with a Feadog (Irish Pennywhistle) and Ocarinas (South America, Africa). I am also quite fond of playing My Didgeridoos as well as a variety of Hand Drums. Occasionally I do Throat Singing ala Tibetan Monk style. You back all this up with ambient Keyboard textures, some Acoustic Guitar and the occasional digital big beats, and You have a veritable audio tour de force. All of the music is Composed, Recorded, Mixed and Performed by Me. For any of You home recordists out there, some of these songs are over a hundred tracks deep!  I use Sonic Foundry Sequencers and Editing tools. I have plug-ins beyond count, and for digital beat sampling, I like to use Rebirth and Reason. As far as any additional percussive sounds You might hear, I have a loose guideline that anything lying around the house can be an impromptu instrument.

     The "Style" of My music, if One must stuff it in a box, is Worldbeat/New Age. Blend Enigma with Ganga Giri with Waterbone with R. Carlos Nakai and pepper lightly with Peter Gabriel and Enya and I think You get the Soundscape I am painting!

     The inspiration for the bulk of My composition is My dearly missed previous Home in the Desert Southwest. However, were I still living there, I might not have composed this body of work, for it seems that It's percieved very absence is indeed My catalyst for creativity. I try to bring My heart-embedded Home back to Me with alluring melody.

Gabriele! Just remember, the essence of haiku is not rules or forms, although those can always be used.

the essence of hiaku is the epiphany, the aha, the insight.

Haiku is the soul of simplicity and grace, shibui, the perfect expression of a moment. the whole point is to let go, jump in and have fun!
