Greetings everyone! I just found Gaia a few days ago while researching sound healing. And, now I find this group!
I've been a bodyworker for the past 18 years. I came to bodywork by finding Wilhelm Reich's work, a therapist who used his ideas and by a desire to learn more about the body since the work is body-centered.
Along the way, I've realized that what Reich refered to as “the thin red thread” that is at the core of everything is vibration. We are in duality which creates a constant state of oscillation between the poles of duality. But, we are also in a state of unity simultaneously. Unity is the state of simply being. There is no movement, there is no-thing. It is the state represented by the 0 and the 1 while duality is represented by 2. Why 0 and 1? When you compress duality to the point where the split begins to disappear, THINGS begin to appear as ONE THING. I believe this is the wholeness we seek.
But, paradoxically, the state of wholeness is really the state of no-thingness since duality disappears. So, some paths point toward wholeness and others toward nothingness. It is the same. But, our dualistic mind needs two numbers, two points of view to “understand” this. Hence, 0 AND 1.
What does this have to do with vibration and sound healing? Imagine energy oscillating between two poles. This can be represented as a wave flowing from one to the other. The more we are in duality, the farther apart the poles. The closer we get to center, to unity, the distance shortens AND the FREQUENCY increases. This is what I view as “increasing our vibration”. And, the “highest” vibration in duality is what? LIGHT!
Becoming more “centered” is moving toward enlightenment which is the highest state available in duality. Go BEYOND that and you're out of duality and become God, whole, nothing…you stop existing and just are.
To my mind, sound doesn't put us in touch with God or our unitive existence. It is part of our dualistic existence and it can facilitate harmony OR dissonance (both are useful) through harmonic resonance or dissonance.
I experienced what Reich called the “orgasm reflex” through the bodywork that was part of his therapy. I began to use that in my practice. It amounts to putting stress on a blocked area while the person initiates and maintains a wave through their breathing. The wave intensifies the energy from within and starts to disperse the stuck energy which is carried by the wave of the breath out of the body. As this happens, energy rushes into the void created and is now allowed to flow unimpeded through the entire body. The body vibrates “on its own”, as in an orgasm.
Aquarian energy is related to this. I associate Aquarius and it's planet Uranus with lightning which refreshes what it flows THROUGH and destroys what resists it. It is also electric and revolutionary.
Until 1760 humanity could not see beyond the planet Saturn. It represents the boundary of our consciousness. Uranus is the next planet out there BEYOND OUR BOX. At the time of Uranus' discovery two interesting phenomena occured. First, there was a spate of “possessions” where people began to spontaneously vibrate, often during religious rites. This was experienced as either possesion or the spirit of God moving through the person. It was the orgasm reflex occuring “out of the blue”…so Uranian!
The other dynamic of this time was the very sudden desire for freedom in the masses. Freedom was never a major desire beyond a few far-sighted individuals. Then SUDDENLY we experienced the Age of Revolution.
Why am I bringing all this up? Because we are segueing into the Aquarian age. We are experiencing lightning-like changes that can either revolutionize the world or destroy it…probably there will be some of both. What gets “destroyed” is what refuses to change. So, it behooves us to become as pliable to the Aquarian energy as we can be. SOUND is the simplest way. Edgar Cayce forecast that sound will be the medicine of the future. Here we are!
I've experienced the didgeridoo as an even more potent way to break up stagnation…beyond deep bodywork…but, IF its combined with breathing. I've experienced crystal bowls and gongs having the same effect. Its really all about vibration. Didges tend to creat the dissonance more than bowls, but bowls create more harmony. I've looked for people to collaborate with in my project to combine sound and breathwork, but its been strangely hard to find like-minded people who I could co-ordinate schedules with.
So, I finally bought a bowl and a slider didg and will try it myself! I bought the slider didg because I know what Samme just posted about the scale somehow being “off”. I was born in Chicago, son of a Bosnian Muslim father and Croatian Catholic mother. I grew up with middle eastern and western music simultaneously. And, because most of my parents' friends were Eastern Orthodox, I was exposed to those chants as well. As I grew, the music of the late 60's influenced me. The Beatles and the Chicago blues. I saw no lines between gut wrenching music and transcendant music. I didn't understand anything, but I felt it.
Now, its all making “sense”, its coming together and its so SIMPLE, so elemental. Its all just frequency. Check out Nikola Tesla's work with harmonic resonance and…LIGHTNING! And, he was from the same part of the world as my parents…the Balkans, the midpoint between east and west.
I'll be posting my experiences with sound. I will especially be experimenting with Samme's info about the Gregorian scale and other “off” scales. I find it interesting that Jimi Hendrix was drawn to a different tuning. So was Albert Collins who was also using rattlesnake rattles in his guitar to create vibratory effects. And, my favorite musician, Peter Green, played a guitar with an incredibly unusual tone. Nobody could tell how he got the tone he did out of his Gibson Les Paul until he had someone do some repair on it. It was discovered that his guitar was shipped with the pick-ups out of phase creating an unusual “off” vibration! Now, Gibson has released a Peter Green guitar with the pick-ups intentionally out of phase! Green was also a great guitarist because of his intensity. He would wait a split second to play a note which increased the tension. He would bend a deep note, hold it with vibration and blend it into a cascading climb that was incredibly cathartic. The man had four planets, including his Sun, in Scorpio with a Sag Venus. His playing was like the Buddhist symbol of the lotus arising from the depths of the darkness at the bottom of the swamp to express its expansive beauty. Truly sound healing.
Pleased to meet you all!
