<![endif]-->

Some months ago I was in Spain visiting my father. My father has always talked about the I Ching, but for some reason I had never myself thrown one. So after a great night of philosophy at the house of a friend of his, we went back home to my father. The theme of the whole day had been the possible change in consciousness and/or the world predicted to happen in 2012. We decided it was the right time to ask the I Ching. So we did. This would be my first I Ching.

We sat at his desk in his apartment. He told me how it all was with the coins and this. The lines and how it all works. So I sat rubbing the coins in my hands contemplating the question. (We had agreed on a good formulation beforehand.)

I began shaking the coins as I contemplated the question, getting ready to throw the coins. "Will ... there be a ... radical change in the year 2012?" I timed the throw so that as soon as I finished the question in my head I let go of the coins. So I thought: "Will there be a radical change in the year 2012?" And BANG! The instant that I let go of the coins the light went out in the apartment making quite a loud *pooft* sound! We were quite disorientated by the sudden total darkness. My father fumbled his way to the flashlight and gave it to me. As we stood there we noticed out the window (this is on the 6th floor) that it wasn't a local blackout in apartment we were in, the whole city was without lights! At least to one side of the city (the part that was visible from the window).

I put the batteries in the flashlight and pushed the button. The flash didn’t work, but the lights went on again the second I pressed down the ON switch. Retrospect this is also interesting, because the reason that the flashlight didn’t go on was that I hadn’t paid enough attention when screwing on lid to the batteries and it wasn’t on correctly. My father and I extrapolated from this that when the shit hits the fan there will be a time of darkness, confusion will arise. One will have the capacity to make some light locally, but it is crucial that one stays frosty and attentive in this confusing situation if one is to be able to get the light to shine locally. But the light comes on by itself – rather it will come back on, so it’s about riding it out.

When the light came back on we sat down and finished the 5 remaining tosses. The result was even more hair-raising than the blackout…

As it was a Spanish translation of the I Ching; the answer I got was the 23 “La Desintegracion” – which directly translated means The Disintegration. In the English version of the I Ching the 23 is “Splitting Apart”.

If you have the I Ching you know what this (might) mean. If you don’t you can get a picture just by thinking about the title… But if this is the case you need to go get yourself the I Ching asap!

This was my first I Ching. Later I bought my own I Ching and am now officially an investigator of the (ingenious) Chinese philosophy.

Tell me what you think this answer could mean – I have an idea, but this is of course my own interpretation and I would like to hear some other points of view.

Oneness,
Evo

Wow! what a great deal. I hope everyone takes advantage of this offer. My book came in less than a week, in good condition and I was over joyed to see what a high quality book it was! I still need some time to really read it through, and it looks like there is quite a bit of material that is covered between its covers1

hi all - my name is Dori, and I just joined gaia in this entity yesterday (i have a personal profile on here somewhere, too, though i haven't used it much if only because if it weren't work-related it wouldn't be cool for me to be here and i don't have much time outside of work for online social networking - yay for work-related!)

i'm the PR department for a small indie press here in Portland, OR called Visionary Networks Press. We are funded by a grant from the Divination Foundation - find out more about us here - http://www.divination.com - our aim is to introduce people to using divination systems to stimulate their intuition and make better decisions. In reading our moderator's postings here I feel we're on the same line of thought. :-)

while i am here i would like to give away BOOKS! FREE!

Our first title is called Divination: Sacred Tools for Reading the Mind of God - It discusses a few different divination systems - i ching, astrology, tarot, numerology, and runes. I am looking to mail out some copies of the title to those of you willing to give it a read, add it to your bookshelves here, and provide us with a short review on Amazon.com.

If you're interested just drop me a private message here on gaia.com and let me know where to send your copy.

thanks, and nice to meet you!

dori

      ------------------------------------------------------------------------

study of the i-ching and an integrally informed relationship to life
seem to go had in hand.
what do you think?

i loved this quote/article and was
amazed how much it brought me back to the lessons of the i-ching.

===========================================
"if we had evolved beyond ego to a significant degree,
how would that be reflected in our personal relationships
-with our sexual partners, with our friends, with our children,
with our bosses, with our colleagues?

In what way would it be demonstrated in our
organizations and our social structures?

How would it affect our relationship to our work, our creative potential,
our capacity for leadership and collaboration?

What impact would it have on
our relationship to our own bodies-our health and fitness?
The list could go on and on, and the implications are profound.

Of course, there have always been spiritual teachers
talking about many of these things
as a means to develop and attain higher potentials,

but what I'm talking about is something different.

I'm talking about using these concrete examples
as windows through which to discern
and dare I say judge the degree of an individual's
or a collective's actual attainment,
in such a way that has the potential for making
the usually intangible, inner,
subjective experience of enlightenment or
consciousness beyond ego
meaningful for our own times."

---
-andrew cohen

-----

I found myself overwhelmed when I faced the reality that I had an exam in a few days and had not mastered anything or even gotten close to being prepared. I started off four weeks ago with a strategy and visions for success & correct balance (work, school home, fun, friends, health..) , but instead saw myself treating my tasks in a half-assed way. ...and struggling through the consequences of procrastination, numbness, and inefficiency.

The ultimate goal for surviving grad school in my mind is -how to be an efficient, effective student (and well rounded practically engaged 'light-bearer' human). To make the best of a choice I made to be in grad school part-time for X amount of time.. and fully engage in that choice.

[btw. I already tried 'not doing' the grad school thing and after a lot of contemplation I concluded that inevitably that is a choice I am compelled toward. I sense it is an added tool that refines whatever it is I was specifically brought into this world to fulfill.

It became clear that we do have inclinations and an instinct that points us to activities or commitments that may be good tools for our development though, it's a matter of recognizing them and then honoring them. This grad school choice seemed to keep showing up for me and so I decided to go for it - so why then would I be half-assed in doing the work it takes to get through it?]

-----------

Each experience we have is an opportunity for being a 'light-bearer' and 'superior-man' (as the iching describes it.)To be present in the life process as it unravels.

I found myself asking -do I need grad school to life a fully engaged life? - likely not lol.. but I am convinced it has little to do with the actual thing we are experiencing as much as the position we choose to take in doing the 'thing' once we venture into it. (i.e. half-assed or fully present?).

For instance - One can be a Harvard graduate and a quantum physicist or a high-school graduate and not quantum physicist, but if the engagement in life is half-assed, does it really make a difference?

When considering lines of development, a fully engaged entry level office assistant who shares light and present awareness with all he meets may be far more developed than a half-assed quantum physicist.;-)

-----------

I am learning that ‘Perfectionist idealism' also takes us away from the reality at hand and can be equally debilitating. One can create huge blocks waiting to be a ‘specific' way - rather than engaging in the small tasks at hand that lead to the next best choice.

I-Ching:

So...I was not surprised that this hexagram below showed up in my 'time' for the day - affirming that which I innately know and also reminding me to breathe and yield and build energy and set my priorities so I can efficiently handle what is in front of me. This hexagram tells me that while goals-ideals can be useful, the way in which we approach them and the way we develop through life is the wise place to focus on.

Baby steps at a time..in clear, precise steps we get to the end point. (not to be cliché but.. - it's the journey not the destination..)

----------

In a moment of asking for an answer, the universe replies and reminds us of the ultimate goal in living a life in this moment, doing the best we can in this moment. We create blocks for ourselves and also have the capacity to let them dissolve through to what is actually real. It all links back to the position we choose to take in relation to life. Are we victims? Or light-bearers? What is our responsibility at any given moment when faced with a task or opportunity? De we hide under the covers and focus on what isn't or do we understand the nature of things and face it through its natural process?

We know deep in our hearts when we are being either ‘half-assed' or too idealist about life.. and we always have the opportunity to yield to a different action. i.e. what is the next best move now! this moment?

--------

"53. Chien / Development (Gradual Progress)

A tree on a mountain develops slowly according to the law of its being and consequently stands firmly rooted. This gives the idea of a development that proceeds gradually, step by step. The attributes of the trigrams also point to this: within is tranquility, which guards against precipitate actions, and without is penetration, which makes development and progress possible.

...Principle of gradual development:

..The development must be allowed to take its proper course. Hasty action would not be wise.

A correct way of development through cultivation of one's own personality. No influence such as that exerted by agitators has A lasting effect. Within the personality too, development must follow the same course if lasting results are to be achieved. Gentleness that is adaptable, but at the same time penetrating, is the outer form that should proceed from inner calm. The very gradualness of the development makes it necessary to have perseverance, for perseverance alone prevents slow progress from dwindling to nothing.

THE IMAGE

On the mountain, a tree:

The image of DEVELOPMENT.

Thus the superior man abides in dignity and virtue,

In order to improve the mores.

The tree on the mountain is visible from afar, and its development influences the landscape of the entire region. It does not shoot up like a swamp plant; its growth proceeds gradually. Thus also the work of influencing people can be only gradual. No sudden influence or awakening is of lasting effect. Progress must be quite gradual, and in order to obtain such progress in public opinion and in the mores of the people, it is necessary for the personality to acquire influence and weight. This comes about through careful and constant work on one's own moral development."

[Excerpt from the Wilhelm/Baynes version of the iching.]

------------------------------------
A question arose recently about spiritual 'practice' and what that meant for me.

I am inclined to believe that we are as spiritual as our life story reveals it to be. Spiritual intentions, thoughts, ideas, understanding, mean very little if they are not in action.

At the end of the day it comes down to how well we've lived our lives and how present we are within that process.

And the measure of ‘how well' is not necessarily something others can see or measure (yet they can!) but ultimately the point is to know that we know when we are *not doing so.

We are constantly given flags when we go 'astray'. .. through our relationships with others. engagement with family, friends strangers. Worldviews. Citizenry. through our jobs or interests or school. through art and music and books.

The constant hallmark is how we respond. We begin seeing that in essence, life doesn't change but our relationship to is does. We don't have to be perfect at anything .. but it is essential we view our relationship to the elements life reveal to us and how we respond. Choice is more about responding than observing. It's an action.

-----
A conversation with a friend lead me to want to do an exercise of listing out some insights that came together after the I Ching entered my life.

To understand that spiritual development and light-bearing has no end point and is by nature in constant evolution, answers questions of:

1) Who am I?
- a manifestation of god/consciousness in material form

2) Why am I here?
- to know myself as consciousness through my material being. i recently heard someone say "we are god having a human experience, not man haveing a god experience". how does that change our framework?

3) What must I do? & why was I placed in a cognitive, acting, feeling, moving mind-body organism?
- to live life knowing my nature and tune in to my evolving nature & creative impulse as i participate in life. (in whatever form that manifests).

4) Where am I going?
- have no clue and it doesn't matter. :-). if I stay at the edge of that awake, aware, open place of constant development and awareness, I know I am at the edge of that forward momentum.

And that space of ‘constant development' is not burdensome or heavy or concrete. It is ever-new. It is liberating. It is not hyper - just expansive and 'light'. It is equally still and silent as it is active or sound.

5) How do I know when I am not in alignment with my truest nature?
- The signals of life indicate it clearly. Our ‘emotional' responses indicate it clearly.

The very nature of consciousness is ‘positive', ‘regenerative' and 'good' - (not about being happy ..or peaceful - see the difference?). It is abundant and awake and aware. It is unceasing humility yet deeply open to infusing all of life with movement and energy. (even in perfect stillness).

We have all tasted what this is like, mistaking that moment of perfect knowing with the activity we were engaging in at the time we recognized it.. then becoming disappointed when that moment no longer provided that high.

To know who we are and why we are here adds an important framework to relating to life.

The I Ching helps me refine my relationship to that framework each day. Meditation & contemplation are tools I use to connect my relationship to my nature (pure consciousness). But to know my nature is but one step in a huge symphony still in process.

To then infuse all of life (the mundane and extraordinary, the sacred and secular) with this. To stay true to it, is a birthright. Why else are we here as sentient beings in manifest form?
---------------------------------------

"The way to study the past is not to confine oneself to mere knowledge of history but, through application of this knowledge, to give actuality to the past."

A very profound truth.

(I look forward to writing more about this later and integrating it into my study of the iching)

From what I’ve read/heard – I’ve gathered.. that allowing an integrally
informed approach into one's awareness is meant to be a *position one takes
toward life; and helps in understanding there is perpetual motion, not
some end point we are all seeking to get to. (for instance one is
encouraged to ask – is it about my enlightenment and my suffering and my
happiness or is it for the greater good – i.e. the very evolution of
consciousness.. which I am part of?).

And to do that one becomes a consciously informed human being who can
exercise body, mind, spirit, self, culture and nature. And integrate an
expanding relationship with self, others and a relationship to the world.
And also be most efficient toward all those areas of development (or always
be forging forward toward that..).

—–It amazed me that with all that material soaked into my pores.. I came upon these words in the quote above, as I was doing my I Ching reading tonight.

The thought occurred to me that the I-Ching was perhaps the edge of its time, the integrally informed model of its time.. and universal. It’s messages are so ingrained with the very workings of the kosmos that one can apply it today quite easily – because it speaks to many of the same lines of human development as well as similar structures and stages of development even if evolution has occurred over time.

It appears that the key is to be able to yield to the messages and first transform the methaphorical constructs (that at first may appear antiquated) .. into the core make-up & meaning of the hexagrams. (i.e. a common denominator that transcends time/history)

Frameworks and maps help us evolve and make sense of things that may appear different or irrelevant but actually all belong to the story.

Good post... good poem. I can recognise my 'blocks' and those parts of life I'm not living fully by a simple sign: I avoid talking with the I Ching about them. "If you don't want to know, don't ask the oracle."

My reading for this week begins with Hexagram 25 - being Without Entanglement. What you wrote about 'fine-tuning our link' reminds me of that. There is the inner creative spark, thunder on the inside, and it connects purely and straightforwardly with the absolute creative power, qian, on the outside. And with that connection alive and vibrant, we can no more be 'wrong' than thunder can.

all very best,
Hilary

I Ching with Clarity

"You must understand the whole of life,
not just one little part of it.
That is why you must read,
that is why you must look at the skies,
that is why you must sing and dance,
and write poems,
and suffer,
and understand,
for all that is life."

----------------------
j. krishnamurti

this krishnamurti quote pointed me back to the relevance of a steady iching practice.
often we want to 'live' all of life yet become stalled at certain points of discomfort, fear..etc. i.e. whatever prevents us from taking that next step toward a freedom we've tasted and know is there.. yet sometimes seems so far away.

the amazing thing abut the iching is that it teaches us how to navigate through these 'blocks'. naturally. there is no set formula or script. it is about fine-tuning our link to that creative impulse within ourselves in a way that each moment we trust .. we trust we are in the flow of things. we know it cuz we feel it. and each mment we make the next best move.

life becomes an action. a movement. a flow

to do that is to allow ourselves to face everyting and avoid nothing. it is only in facing life that we can truly live it.

we are meant to be active, engaging, aware, moving manifestations of energy and light throgh this world. ... it is our birthright .

that which prevents us (usually ourselves lol through our volition).. that too can be yielded to.

----------------------

Hi Everyone,

It's been especially quiet lately (such is the ebb & flow ;-). I wanted to offer a reminder that you are invited anytime -to make this pod your own. Any discussion or inquiry is welcomed.

For those of you who recently joined our pod and haven't heard from me, a warm welcome to you.

My intention was simply to create the space for the unfolding of insights & shared experiences - about living in the world from that 'awake' place (whether one is actually 'awake' or not).

The iching has helped me ( & continues to help me) and I wanted to share it with others as a possible tool to help along the way no matter what 'path' one chooses.

As you may have noticed, the i-ching is somewhat of a 'quiet' inner practice. and it's most commonly viewed as an 'oracle'. I invite you to go further with it to the level of what it can offer in 'practically engaging in life' from an open, deeply aware place.

We receive the tools, we meditate/focus on the messages received daily and then allow the meaning to unfold. We learn how to apply the lessons in daily life experiences. Slowly but surely things change.

I practice the i-ching each night, in addition to meditation & other spiritual explorations (among many interests on the spiritual realm - i have a great affinity for ken wilber's & andrew cohen's teachings). Somehow they all work together wonderfully. In a short time I've gained so much.

The i-ching keeps me grounded, humble & centered in ways I could not have accomplished before. (through work, relationship, friendship, family, spiritual, -& mundane experiences - the whole range of it).

So even with my long periods of silence just wanted to thank you for tagging along & sharing in this community of spirit & I encourage you to participate & take ownership of this pod as you wish.

This pod is an open canvas & feel free to paint it if you care to.

Hope you're have a beautiful day.

~with love & gratitude

      dear hilary

your note was very moving, it caused a heaviness in my heart in such a direct way. I think that is what happens when people connect form a level of consciousness and heart. even through email one can be moved with a few simple words.

it feels as if the 'usual' societal things to say in times like these --seem not necessary in this conversation ----- your strength is evident, your awareness of what it means and how to work through it and your clarity about the peace that come come from breaking apart-ness.

yes - in such a short time the i-ching has changed my life. as my i-ching teacher donald marshall says -- it changed the 'probable outcome'. i see it every day. i am in constant awe.

thank you for sharing the benefits of the iching on this pod. it is always good to get more feed-back on the elements of the i-ching that go beyond the surface of it being an 'oracle' ----

I am finding the layers of it to be truly life altering.

Wishing you much light in this time of healing and contemplation.

with love

Thank you - I will look.

My Mum died in July. No more pain, debility, drugs or mad-driving institutional-think for her. When I asked Yi what I could do for her and was told Stripping Away (23), no changing lines, I had an idea what was coming.

A couple of days ago I asked what her power was (as I've got the message there is something about her I need to accept and absorb), and Yi said Hexagram 2 - again unchanging - !

Where would we be without this oracle? Pretty much in the dark, in my case.

The I Ching teaches how to relate to the world from a *kosmocentric place [vs. ethnocentric or egocentric place].

This especially became evident to me tonight as I read the words in hexagram 25, after pondering on a 'perceived' difficult situation of ‘relatedness' and misunderstanding at work. (likely due to breakdown in communication).

I say 'perceived' since in the end it all comes down to how our choice to responding/reacting to experiences or observing them as they are yet remaining the 'observer'. It seems very possible for one to master this and to learn to not 'react' with labels such as 'difficult' or 'burdened' or 'victim' or 'wronged'.

Yet - on the mundane level – it felt like a huge bubble of blaah-ness these past weeks, as if the very air was in a burdened void & unable to circulate - - yet I learned through the i-ching when to stay still and when to move.

And yeah - many moments I forgot myself and saw the result of that also. The result of what can happen when one is not operating from a place of ‘pure-heart' or the ‘bigger view' or ‘lightbearer'. You know? .. that not so ‘pure-' place clouded by emotion or exhaustion and mind activity but very ‘real' experientially.

With a ‘pure heart ' we open up and place ourselves in the ‘other's' shoes and see through the experience more easily. There is less ‘burden' and more compassion even if one feels wronged or overwhelmed in the moment.

The i-ching reminds us of pure heartedness, of our innocence, or our truest nature, or what is real and of how to live life- all of it- (the stellar moments and the weaker ones also) -with integrity. - and no, it doesn't all have to happen at once, lol, but it certainly takes us a step closer to that which already is (our essential pure nature) each moment.

in fact, we begin seeing that there is no such thing as being ‘wronged' ;-) and equally no such thing as being ‘right' lol

It resonates in every fiber of my being that this is the very nature of being human. To know one's own nature - man as the essence of god , god manifest through man. To knOw so that one can then practically engage in the world from that place of ‘innocence'.

——–
So here are some important words offered to me tonight through the iching on ‘innocence' (pure mindedness)

(from the wilhelm version: hexagram 25)

25. Wu Wang / Innocence (The Unexpected)

above CH'IEN THE CREATIVE, HEAVEN
below CHêN THE AROUSING, THUNDER

…”Man has received from heaven a nature innately good, to guide him in all his
movements. By devotion to this divine spirit within himself, he attains an
unsullied innocence that leads him to do right with instinctive sureness and
without any ulterior thought of reward and personal advantage. This
instinctive certainty brings about supreme success and ‘furthers through
perseverance”.

However, not everything instinctive is nature in this higher
sense of the word, but only that which is right and in accord with the will of
heaven. Without this quality of rightness, an unreflecting, instinctive way of
acting brings only misfortune. Confucius says about this: “He who departs
from innocence, what does he come to? Heaven's will and blessing do not go
with his deeds.”.”..

——————-

*here's an article referencing the ‘kosmocentric' view within a practical framework.
it is the basic context through which i am using the word ‘kosmocentric'

——————-

      Hello fellow student :)

I like that quotation from Andrew Cohen very much - thank you. It looks like something I could quote when talking about hexagram 29 and 'holding fast your heart' as you enter the deep waters. Then - and only then - lucid understanding (hexagram 30) follows.

What can you recommend for some beginners' reading of Andrew Cohen?

best wishes,
Hilary
