I was never particularly into hip-hop or rap either but I do love this album.

I try to find at least one song I like in every genre.

This is one of Arthur's favorite albums of all time, and he was SO not into this kind of music in any way before he heard this CD. So it is highly recommended...though I never could really appreciate it musically.

Liz

Music has the ability to stir variety of emotions, thoughts and states of consciousness in us, thus it would perhaps qualify as state training. Or at least as a tool to explore how specific states arise in us. Some musical pieces can even put the listener into heightened states of consciousness.

What are some of the songs which causes nonordinary states to arise within you?

Here's some personal examples:

Saul Williams - Coded Language (Evokes what Andrew Cohen calls Authentic Self)

Johann Sebastian Bach - Toccata & Fugue (Just something far out..)

Stuart Davis - Fear of Light (Magnifies the contrast between ego and pure being)

Enya - Caribbean Blue (Blissful relaxation)

Here is Wikipedia's definition of post-rock:

“Post-rock is a genre of alternative rock characterized by the use of musical instruments commonly associated with rock music, but using rhythms, harmonies, melodies, timbre, and chord progressions that are not usually found in rock tradition. It is the use of 'rock instrumentation' for non-rock purposes. Practitioners of the genre's style typically produce instrumental music.”

Here's a couple examples of groups that do mostly the instrumental style:

I've been exploring a few new genres of music lately, such as math rock and post rock. In this thread, I'll post some post-rock tunes I've been enjoying. Many are instrumental, but these first two tunes, from The Sea and Cake, aren't -- they've got a smooth, jazz-soul sound to them.

      Thanks 1Vector3 :)

Yes, I think I've found some similarities. For one, integral folk tend to pay a lot more focus on the lyrics. One crude example; "gangsta" rap won't pass through without at least a hint of a smile. And from what I've gathered, the intention behind the creation of a musical piece becomes magnified under an integral attention and becomes quite an important aspect of what such a person looks for in music. For example, was the intention on making more money or raise the listeners consciousness etc.

I'm not saying this applies to all integral people, just to some whom I've observed. Hmm, it's an interesting question what to do with these generalizations. I don't know. I was thinking that the group would be a good place for a discussion on how music can affect the development of consciousness and what would an integral listening/composing consist of. For example, will the listener always filter the lyrical content (as with any information) through his or her stage of development no matter how transcendent the content might be, and thus miss the actual message of the lyrics. Or does it even matter? :)

Hi smlak, welcome to this group !!! Thanks for the fascinating information. Technology is amazing. This particular technology is one of those two-perspective dealies: very useful, and very Big Brother-ish, one of those currently voluntary privacy invasions, like shopping cards.

Are you finding similarities in what integrally-interested folks listen to? Any generalizations you can venture so far from your database? What would you DO with any generalizations you could form, or do you see the group mostly as for swapping info about relevant music?

Blessings, OM Bastet

      Hi,

I'm new to the Integral Pod and thought about starting with introducing a group I created recently on Last.fm. It's a place for integral discussion on music and seeing what other people with an integral worldview listen to. Everyone's welcome to join in: http://www.last.fm/group/Integral+Listening

Here's a short description of last.fm from wikipedia:

"Using a music recommender system called "Audioscrobbler", Last.fm builds a detailed profile of each user's musical taste by recording details of all the songs the user listens to, either on the streamed radio stations, the user's computer or many portable music devices. This information is transferred to Last.fm's database ("scrobbled") via a plugin installed into the user's music player. The profile data is then displayed on the user's profile page. The site offers numerous social networking features and can recommend and play artists similar to the user's favourites."

      >>I am a bit mystified by the inclusion of Jehovah/Yahweh who is a minor Creator Being and not a very high vibration one, at that. In fact, sometimes downright vengeful.

I think it goes with the cowboy persona he has adopted for Puscifer.

>>Any idea what “get it right with Jesus” means??

I didn't take it to have any one particular meaning. He's been critical of Christians with an undertone of sympathy to the tradition in his other projects though. "Judas" in A Perfect Circle, and "10,000 days" in Tool for example.

>>Thanks again for this interesting stuff, and I am so glad you discovered good stuff through them!!!

Thanks! :P
