Changing the subject unobtrusively to something more family-oriented, if not downright integral.
Look, it's Jessica The Pet Hippo

Jessica, the hippopotamus, has made herself a member of this South African family. She is restricted to only going in the kitchen now since she broke a couch and a bed.

It's a wonderful world,

m

Who is Jirka? And why should I care if he sits up and takes note?

Perhaps a typo. What you meant to say was Jerka. Now let me assure you, she never could get into those seeds. No therapy has helped her to take a more integral stance either. She'd rather play strip poker with a bunch of truckers in Alabama than fiddle with seeds -- or so I've been told.

J, er... m

Hee, you guys! Sheesh. Librarians tend to go out of their way to be inclusive, and if they removed everything that somebody thought was dangerous or offensive, the shelves would be completely empty. The Anarchist Cookbook is a tough case, mind you, but then lots of people would find it a no-brainer to remove Heather Has Two Mommies from libraries and have tried repeatedly to do so.

I do think that lengthy discussion of these topics belongs in its own thread, but then, I don't moderate this place anymore, praise the lord! :P Originally I imagined this thread as a daily checking-in chit-chat kinda thang, but it has never consistently worked out that way and I don't feel particularly attached to how it evolves from here.

Vancouver Public Library used to have back issues of Playboy, and may still for all I know, along with lots of other stuff that some people would - either cheerfully or with outraged horror - define as pornography (Women on Top anyone?) Or, hell, just go to the VPL website and browse around if you're curious as to what's there - yes, The Anarchist Cookbook is in the collection.

As for the anti-integral book theory, I wouldn't jump to conclusions on that. Books are withdrawn for all kinds of reasons, including being replaced by a newer copy or updated edition or because the book is not circulating very well. As a clerk at VPL I would sometimes have the task of taking books off the shelf and checking the "circ stats" on the computer. If a book hadn't been borrowed at all for the past year or two, it might be withdrawn from the shelf. Or if there were several copies in the entire library system (21 branches) but a copy wasn't doing well at a particular location, that branch's copy might be withdrawn.

If you want to keep integral books circulating, borrow them periodically and thereby increase the circulation statistics. :) Another idea is to request particular titles for purchase, and ask your integral friends to do the same.

spiral out,
arthur

Your comments remind me of probably the single most abomidable (sp?) manifest expression of Boomeritis I have ever seen. My brother worked at the library in our home town for a long time. Available at the library, to anyone who wanted it, usually teenagers, was the Anarchist's Cookbook. A manual for making bombs, out of easy to find materials. Oh, the library had a "safety" policy of 1.) it couldn't be checked out, only viewed (and photocopied!) and 2.) it wasn't on display. You had to request it. My brother said it made him so angry. It was always teenagers coming in to look at it. Why and for what reasons on earth would they be doing so/ Even be interested? He once attempted to "abuse" his power behind library scenes and throw it out, or hide it or make sure it was accidentally "lost." Guess what? Once he did so, only a short time later a new copy was on had, or more teens to look at, etc.

Now, is this a matter of free speech? Freedom of the press? Okay. Then why doesn't the library carry pornography? Why can't I check out Playboy and Penthouse at the library? In a fit of outrage I even called the library once on that count and asked. Do you carry pornography? Oh no sir. Then why the Anarchist's Cookbook?

Anyway, you get the point. I just think that is such an example of red being allowed an open door to flourish.

Perhaps this is off topic. Oh no, wait, nothing is off topic in thie thread.

Thanks arthur,

Naomi's is one of the voices I pay attention to every chance I get.

The clip reminded me of what an invaluable asset libraries were in my teens. I would hang out with ol' Bern Dibner at his Burndy Library (now there's a Dibner Wing at the Smithsonian). The Sterling Memorial Library at Yale was a favorite haunt for a while. My hometown public library, The Ferguson Library, was the first in the States to offer internet access to the public. The NYPL had me placing microphisch(sp?) requests whenever the spirit moved me (what a f*ing great collection!).

These commons, these collections, at such risk of further comodification, are worth every effort that can be made to preserve their availability to the private individual.

At a library here in Santa Fe, I recently picked up a few discards from a $ale table, three of which were by authors featured on IN/ISC media! I don't know who's on the board there but a bias seemed evident. Apparently, being taken out of circulation is a next best thing to being burned. The fact that I scored a pristine first run copy of No Boundry (w/ my zen teacher's photography on the cover) is no compensation for the suspicion that these books, among only a few hundred out of many thousands, were culled from view, liquidated back into private.

~yakking,

  K

Of possible minor interest to somebody, here is a six minute YouTube video clip of Naomi Klein talking to the picket line of the union of my former employer, the Vancouver Public Library, during a strike that went on way too long:

Naomi Klein Speaks to CUPE Picket Line

As luck would have it, I started a year leave without pay from VPL just before the union went on strike, and thereby missed out on a more than three month long strike.

spirals,
arthur

Hmm. Possibly. It's certainly a different crowd, though there's probably overlap.

There were roughly the same number of both sexes at each event, though. We're talking about a subjective interpretation of the attractiveness of the people there.

You'd have to take into account where the tickets for each event were sold as well. The kirtan was promoted by a yoga center, hence, I suspect, the surplus of young and obviously flexible females. And Adyashanti is probably for the more hard core, though now that I think of it, perhaps it's also an age thing. Women and men do tend to take on more of the opposite characteristics as they age. Perhaps that would explain more older men at KD's kirtan and more older women at the satsang.

All conjecture, as the sample is too small, but interesting to think about.

Liz

Hmm.

Liz

      Liz:
Here's the strange thing: there were a lot of really cute young women at the Krishna Das kirtan, but all the cute guys were at the Adyashanti satsang.

A textbook example of (masculine) men being attracted to the ascending spirituality and (feminine) women to the more descending one...

Doing both is ideal of course :)

Pelle
