This is, however, not true, and the investors are wrong. The stock market has done better under every Democrat, as far as I know. The smart money is on companies with sustainable and humane policies, and they will thrive.

Now, I'm going to lock this thread, and head on over to the new thread Mary started. If anyone feels like they need to respond to something on this thread, feel free to start a new one with a related title, and link to or copy anything you like from this thread.

Liz

Tely, the stock market is a forward-looking mechanism. Traders bet on what they think is likely to happen in the future. Big-time professional traders are plugged into the fact that Obama has been projected to win this election for quite a while -- and now with ever-growing certainty. Since Obama will tax the rich and will change the rules that unfairly favor major corporations, they've either sold off their stakes already to price in that loss in future corporate earnings, or they've hedged their bets using options strategies.

Hope that makes sense. Oh, by the way, I've heard stock traders predict a huge rally if McCain wins.

m

Also, by all accounts, the stock market has already priced in an Obama win (not good for the top tier of the investor class).

Mascha, I is pretty ignorant about this stuff. What does this mean?

The creativity and solidarnosc across the US and other countries is reaching mind-boggling proportions.

Just this morning, the brother of a friend of an activist friend put together this hard-hitting montage of the past 8 years under Bush, set to the catchy Dylan tune

Everything Is Broken

I'll post something about why it's unlikely that "they" will manage to steal this election too later.

Love from the trenches,

m

Much appreciation to all friends across the pond; and apologies that the "shenanigans" of the US affect everyone else so deeply. Debbie Ford posted in her shadow blog on Oct. 30 how we have become a "battered nation". I would post the link if I knew how, but I don't. The good thing about this, is in the fact that the survivor instinct has been brought out. Today I will be enthusiastically calling some more people and reminding them that they count and there is another way. I am also leaving many messages on machines. Tonight when I get home, I will put a bottle of champagne in the fridge (the cynic is putting a box of wine in, which will actually come in handy for the big celebration!). Tomorrow I'll shampoo the rugs in my house and rake leaves(unless someone needs a ride to the polls). I am SO glad this is almost over; I can't even begin to imagine how the people directly involved are feeling.
Peace and love all around.
Chris

GAAHHHHH !!!!

Can we just HAVE his election already??!!

It just feels like its taking FOREVER .....

That " waiting for biopsy results" comparison is a good one, Tely. This really is what it feels like.

There have been some racial slurs spattered on Obama yard signs in my town .... part of my fear now is that -- even if we manage not to have voter suppression or other such shenanigans -- that an Obama win might seriously freak a certain segment of people out, and they'll respond with violence. Sporadic and spotty, but still dangerous.

And yet I can also envision things going more smoothly than we thought they would. I really have no idea what trajectory we'll find ourselves on.

Holding on but up too late,

Mary

I feel really hopeful and a measure anxious, though my overall sense is that the neo-cons' and fear-mongers' chickens are coming home to roost.

I think they're suffering the inevitable apathy and defeat that comes from focusing almost all their energies on domination through the propagation of cynicism, fear, apathy, and hopelessness; it has to boomerang, and I think their erupting cynicism is sapping them of the will they'd need to pull off the feat of a stolen election. Some of the most impervious of them perhaps are just quietly licking their wounds and choosing their battles, but I can't help but think that they know this battle got away from them.

I pray that I'm right about this.

Yeah, if anyone knows a real time place we can meet on Tuesday, share that info here so we can gather or check in.

We could at least just create a "live" thread, right? Doesn't Gaia have a chat function? Anyone used it? Does it have conference chatting capabilities?

Hopefully yours,
Lauren

Is anyone else feeling anxious about this? As Tuesday approaches, I'm finding myself palpably experiencing anxiety -- not just a mental thing. Very strange for me, because I've never cared about politics before, but now there's no way I can deny that the results of the election will directly impact me and life and the lives of everyone around me. And although I'd like to feel reassured by the polls showing Obama in the lead, I don't really trust that we have free elections anymore. So I'm feeling the same sense of anxiety that I would if there was something I personally had going on, as if I was waiting for biopsy results to come in on Tuesday.
