Integral action in the world

Time's they are a-changing. But these days, I think evolving is a better word. Because integral activity is a-cookin' out there in the streets and fields and corridors, and it's time we started connecting the dots.

Notice that I use integral with a small “i'. I don't want to restrict us to any particular denomination. I could -...(more)

New Eyes, New Lenses, and a New Palestine

Albert said Aug 4, 2008, 7:42 PM:

A recent presentation at World Future Society. See a personal report from Laura Frey Horn - Senior Research Fellow, Center for Human Emergence-Middle East
Adjunct Professor, University of Virginia, School of Continuing & Professional Studies
President, Eureka Consulting Services - below.

How to introduce SDi to devloping nations is once again demonstrated.

New Eyes, New Lenses, New Palestine

New Eyes, New Lenses, and a New Palestine: A Spiral Dynamics Perspective on Cultural Emergence and Nation-Building

Dr. Don Beck & Elza Maalouf present at the World Future Society
July 28th at 11 am-12 noon

This presentation will illustrate the use of Spiral Dynamics in reframing the “hot” issues of our day. Rather than reinforcing the stereotypes around race, religion, and ethnicity, the focus will be on the real human differences at the core of conflicts. Likewise, it will illustrate when, why, and how “new eyes” form, creating new political models, bridging over great divides, and making possible new initiatives around mutual understanding and conflict avoidance.

This is not just another theory of human behavior; rather, it is an action-oriented conceptual system that has a great deal of power and precision in addressing historic problems that many believe are intractable. Based on the seminal work of Professor Clare W. Graves, this bio-psycho-social system framework was first field-tested in dealing with Apartheid in South Africa, and is now being used literally around the world to address major issues. The current application in the Middle East, both within and between Israel and Palestine,  represents perhaps the most difficult challenge that confront those applying this emerging conceptual system.

Also, in this session the presenter will describe how to use Natural Design in such a way as to meet people at different levels of complexity. These are the “new eyes” to which we must aspire if we want to address our serious problems in this century.

Who should attend:
Individuals seeking practical solutions to complex problems; those looking for better ways to understand diversity, complexity, and change; those who wish to explore more deeply into an understanding of human nature and how people, companies, organizations, and societies actually change; and those who are serious about making a difference in the world.

What you'll learn
: A new perspective on human nature; new models that make the old paradigms obsolete; and creative approaches to dealing with conflict, the sense of being left behind, and other deep causes of social turbulence. Participants will get to understand why so many “Road Maps” for the Middle East have failed-and how to get it right.

How can this new knowledge be applied
: By dealing with deeper codes rather than behavior, systems and structures, or even minds and ways of thinking, it becomes possible to get to the core of interpersonal, organizational, and societal problems or even to actually “change” organizational cultures.

Isolated, two floors above the World Future Society's main conference and other sessions. I realized as I climbed the stairs and made the final twists and turns to find the meeting room that anyone attending New Eyes, New Lenses, New Palestine would be making a conscious decision. Yet, when I entered the room, it was standing room only. Initially I thought I heard a buzz in the room and looked around for an air conditioning vent creating noise, or the quiet chatter of participants.

The only speakers were Don (Beck) and Elza (Maalouf), sharing their dialogue in the comfortable way of people who have worked together for a long time and who share a superordinate goal. The buzz was created by the energy and full attention of the participants, leaning forward to hear and to learn about how Spiral Dynamics integral was creating the framework to understand and support a root change in Palestine.

The room held a hundred seats and still more folks arrived to stand in the crowded back space. They muttered apologies to others standing (“Sorry, I've been looking for this room for twenty minutes!”), but everyone remained. Don and Elza introduced Spiral Dynamics integral, SDi for short, for the uninitiated. (For a greater understanding of SDi, please visit:

) They included the Sherifs' work including Spectrums on Conflict and Social Norms with the appropriate colors of the Spiral superimposed on the Spectrums. (And, when discussing relationships within Palestine and those with Israel, conflict is too often close to the surface.) The group listened intently, including those “old timers” knowledgeable in SDi, reinforcing previous understanding and highlighting new knowledge. (My “old timer” experience began as a psychology major and student of Clare Graves at Union College in Schenectady, NY in the 1970's.)
