It is good to have joined this group.

I am a health conscious individual. I live in Washington and we have a very health conscious community here. We have an amazing farmers' market from April to December with fresh organic produce, homemade soaps and clothes and tasty mushrooms. We walk and ride bikes a lot in our town and we strive to be as green and not wasteful as possible. We recycle seriously and use compost for our gardens and plant trees.

I generally eat healthy organic food and raw foods. I don't have a garden but we have a few health food stores here that are just wonderful. One of my favorite foods are goji berries. Some of the best food on earth for us. I also take amazing health products called Kyani and I am an independent distributor. I have never felt more alive and well in my life.

I think that the world is changing every day and people on all levels are just beginning to figure out that truly, you are what you eat. I envision that these wonderful health food stores are going to become quite popular over the next few decades and that we will eventually have a health conscious, thriving world. My favorite exercise has to be running around Lake Padden. It's about 2.6 miles and I love listening to music and seeing all the happy faces.

even if I don't find a solution here I can get some ideas or maybe offer some support to someone else in similar circumstances. I have a relatively minor back injury, my mother has some brain injury, my boyfriend has a serious neck injury. All cause chronic pains and I'm looking for the magic panacea of course I retain hope whether or not it exists.........I am not sure where to start to post about these things in particular. Especially I want to know as much about diet and medical properties about specific pain fighting foods that could help in respect to these things as possible. Please point to where I can click
Thanks
Jill

      Hello all!

My name is Tamela. I am the executive director for a nonprofit that supports people with herpes and hpv.

As you can imagine, the members of our organization have had some very interesting experiences with the healthcare system. Most often with them treating the disease and forgetting the whole person: the dating/social person, the sexual person, the emotional/psychological person. We have started our organization, in part, to raise awareness of these issues with the medical community.

I look forward to talking with everyone on this group.

Thanks!

Tamela

Yup, I'm from Australia and finished a BHSc degree with a major in Homeopathic Medicine last year. I'm in the process of starting up a practice with my current focus being on creating informative content for my practice's website. Although I'm not sure how often I will post here as my focus will be on my practice attempting to spread the word and education people on the benefits of Homeopathic Medicine though I'm especially interested in the integration of different therapies in order to provide the best care for the patient/client. Hence, why I'm joining. Well, look forward to discussing the various nuances of integral health, it'll be an interesting ride no doubt.

      Hello Everyone
Just wanted to say hello while I'm getting my feet here on zaadz. I am a holistic physiotherapist (amongst other things) working in Johannesburg. Since I started learning about healing and health I have believed in an integral approach to the whole realm of health care. In SA we are faced with very specific and difficult challenges due to the old dregs of apartheid and the pendulum swinging out a balance. Personally though I tend to deal alot with chronic pain and patients that are done going from therapist to therapist working in the old mode with little result. I find it a great pleasure and woo-hoo type experience to go with my clients on their journeys and be part of their discoveries.

Anymore you want to know I guess there is my blog :)

Namaste
Ivo

{Hi folks, the following is on my profile but I thought I save you the trouble.-P}

About me 1:

“Truth is the First casualty of War. It is also the first condition of Peace”

“Everybody has a piece of the Truth and every body has a piece of the Lie.”

“Violence doesn’t work. Non-violence doesn’t work either. Maybe Healthy Culture will work”

  —Piankhy Thompson

We all live in, are infected by, and suffer from, a sick Culture of Apart-ness, of Alienation. This culture, like all culture is comprised of Cosmology, Identity, Ritual, and Infrastructure. In the case of the dominant culture this means; a Cosmology of Apart-ness, an Identity-Politics of Apart-ness, Rituals of (inner and outer) Apart- ness, and Infrastructures of Apart-ness. Education (formal and informal) is the transmission of culture, and in our case it is the transmission of this sick culture. The factional political paradigms or our time (including those based on race, gender, class, political party, nationality, even species) are all symptoms of, rather than cures for, this condition of sick culture. As such, none of them have any potential at all for changing anything that matters in any sustainable way. We have no time for this.

Since sick culture is the problem, it follows that Healthy Culture is the solution. So what is Healthy Culture and how does it manifest on the collective, political Level? Glad you asked. This question is explored on my two motime blogs :integralscience.motime.com and lifedancelog.motime.com. There I write of an extremely small, but vital and replicable, Cultural Pilot Project that is currently going on in the cultural microclimate of Twin Oaks Intentional community in Virginia,(soon to move to England perhaps) involving the practice of Healthy Culture; its cosmology of Togetherness (Integral Science), its Identity-Politics of Togetherness (Individual-Personhood), it’s Rituals of Togetherness (Life-Dance rituals) and its Infrastructure of Togetherness.

Hi, Mark. I think we all have the same questions at some time or another, especially with a full life and family.

It sounds like you have so many things you don't know where to focus your energies in terms of your own "improvement" or health. I'm a parent mentor for people who are changing their child's diet to help with a biomedical approach to curing autism. Changing one's diet is probably one of the most difficult things to do in terms of lifestyle changes.

It's a process, not a goal or one-day event. I tell them to start by adding certain foods that will eventually be replacing foods they now eat. So for instance, trying out different kinds of gluten-free breads to replace wheat bread. Once they have some core items that are acceptable to the child, they can remove one of the kinds of foods that cause reactions.

On the process goes until that person has completely changed their family's lifestyle, including where they eat when going out for dinner, what they take with them when leaving the house, how they handle food at school, others in the extended family, etc. It's such a huge task that looking at the larger picture is too overwhelming, especially for parents of disabled children! But one little step at a time is manageable, and also helps to find out what works and what doesn't. If you do everything at once, you have no idea if you really need, say 14 supplements, or only 5 that really work.

The other thing I try to encourage is to get your partner to buy into your changes. It's very difficut to do unless your wife is working with you.

Liz

Hey everyone - I am quite the novice at Zaadz but have been wanting to post so here I go. The thing is, I often wonder "will I ever be healthy?". Somewhat of a ridiculous question but in the total health, loving, detached, selfless, Bodhisattva sense what will it take? iAccording to lab work and MD's I am healthy. Damn if they could see my mind at work - and there's the catch; I am a counselor/therapist who can help most in therapy typically Cognitive Behavioral Therpay, Choice Theory and Reality Therapy are my main tools but add a twist of spiritual direction, psychodynamic work, existentialism and top it all of with motivational enhancement to exercise and practice mindfulness and the results are often amazing.

But what about me??

I won't even touch on counseling as I have seen more than plenty and well apparently I'm good. I have been practicing Buddhism for over a decade. My mind is still a mess? I have under the care of supposedly amazing classical homeopaths. I am never sure if it ever did anything? More recently I started seeing a naturopathic physician and she is great and for the first time I can say that maybe I feel healthier with the supplements...but there is still that hurdle of self-discipline I personally struggle with. There is that hurdle to overcome - some sort of commitment I suppose. Self-discipline? Then there is the procrastination which I think gets way too much attention. I mean the more you gve it attention the more it grows.

I may at this point be writing just because I started this and want to come to a close with valid questions posed that hopefully someone will find interesting enough to respond to. Being employed full time, a wife in college and 5 yr and 3 yr old boys at home, where do I find "me" time. I know in Buddhist thought I am compartmentalizing and it's all "me" time but truly time alone to do all of these things to increase my health and not for any vain reasons but for the sake of my family. Exercise, meditation, reading, introspection, contemplation and have a small social life - where do you guys find the time? Is it commitment, self-discipline or can I just let go and "get it". Is my search for health which I include as synonymous with happiness preventing me from health? It is an age old question? I don't know - maybe I just wanted to write?!

Peace,
Mark

I wish to introduce you to an idea in progress. I invite you all to comment, suggest and pass this on to any and all who can give energy for its manifestation.

Acupuncture Ambassadors
Mission Statement

“To contribute to the medical care of disadvantaged peoples worldwide by generating greater self -reliance through the teaching and application of basic acupuncture principles. To that end our volunteer acupuncture practitioner/diplomats spread the knowledge and value of Traditional Asian Medicine as a powerful and viable healthcare modality throughout developing nations.”

We do this by sharing knowledge with local medical practitioners, doctors, nurses, and medical assistants, by imparting theoretical and practical training in acupuncture. We provide the teaching supplies and the necessary acupuncture equipment, then maintain follow-up evaluations as an addition to overall public and primary health care systems.

Why Acupuncture?

Overview:

Worldwide research studies conclude that the positive health benefits of Acupuncture are both curative and preventive. The renowned United Nation's based World Health Organization (WHO) lists more than 40 conditions for which acupuncture is a useful treatment; including immunity compromised patients such as those with (HIV/Aids). In addition, acupuncture protocols can be initiated in emergency situations where normal life saving equipment is neither available nor affordable.

In accordance to the needs of developing nations conditions appropriate for Acupuncture Therapy are as follows:

Digestive: Abdominal pain, Constipation, Diarrhea, Hyperacidity, Indigestion

Emotional: Anxiety, Depression, Insomnia, Nervousness, and Neurosis and PTSD

Eye-Ear-Nose-Throat: Cataracts, Gingivitis, Poor vision, Tinnitus, Toothache

Gynecological: Infertility, Menopausal symptoms, Premenstrual syndrome

Addiction Control

Athletic performance, and Blood pressure regulation
Chronic fatigue, Immune system support, Stress reduction, Diabetes

Musculoskeletal: Arthritis, Back pain, Muscle cramping, Muscle pain/weakness, Neck pain, Sciatica

Neurological: Headaches, Migraines, Neurogenic Bladder dysfunction, Parkinson's disease, Postoperative pain, Stroke

Respiratory: Asthma, Bronchitis, Common cold, and Sinusitis, Smoking cessation, Tonsillitis

Source: World Health Organization, United Nations

     - Health care practitioners (doctors, nurses, medical assistants) trained in acupuncture are much more self-reliant. There is even a series of acupuncture protocols that can be initiated in emergency situations where conventional life saving equipment is not available.

      - Acupuncture affords significant savings in medicines, which in these developing nations are often expensive and hard to come by.

      - Humanitarian assistance through acupuncture is also inexpensive, since the total cost, paid by Acupuncture Ambassadors, is essentially limited to the following:

            - air and ground transportation costs, food and lodging expenses for the volunteer      practitioners/diplomats;
            - teaching supply costs;
            - costs for acupuncture supplies.

      - This kind of humanitarian assistance, which helps the local economy, is useful in reducing dependency on Western largesse and contacts.

- The teaching of acupuncture thus contributes to the preservation of human dignity amongst aid recipients.

- The teaching of acupuncture and the theories of Traditional Asian Medicine also creates and fosters a common language, a global language, in which all acupuncture practitioners and patients worldwide can communicate thus solidifying international relationships and cross-cultural bonds betweens citizens of countries of the world. A healthier more productive, cohesive and inter-connected world united by the common language of Acupuncture and Traditional Asian Medicine.

The Role of Acupuncture Ambassadors

Acupuncture Ambassadors conceives and carries out humanitarian missions in developing countries, with the aim of training acupuncture practitioners. Initial focus will be Southeast Asia ie. Cambodia, Thailand, Viet Nam, India, but not limited to any opportunity for service.

What is the period for a mission of Acupuncture Ambassadors?
      - An exploratory mission permits us to plan a course of action and secure the agreement of local authorities (health ministries, heads of clinics, etc.): the questions decided include length of stay, participants, available medical facilities, and coordination of the training program.

      - Acupuncture Ambassadors interventions generally consist of three or four missions or sessions of actual training, each lasting from two to three weeks.

      - These sessions are spaced at intervals of six to twelve months

      - One or more control or follow-up missions may be planned afterwards, at intervals of two to three years.

What kind of training does Acupuncture Ambassadors provide?
      - A grounding in acupuncture theory and practice is given to care-givers within the medical premises, usually a hospital, dispensary or clinic.

      - Necessary training supplies (books, photocopies, acupuncture charts) as well as acupuncture supplies (needles, moxa) are provided to the interns upon their first work assignment. A continuing supply program is developed to help send needed acupuncture supplies ongoing to the mission sites.

Who provides the training proposed by Acupuncture Ambassadors?
      - During each intervention, training is provided throughout the sessions by volunteer acupuncture practitioners, all experienced in the teaching of Traditional Asian medicine theory. All our volunteer practitioner / teachers diplomats will take a future role in the mentoring of their students with correspondence via letter and or/email.

What is the training program developed by Acupuncture Ambassadors?
      - The program, which combines theory and practice, covers from the very first session the entire basis of the discipline with regard to acupuncture energies, their pathways, and the locations of the points as well as physio-pathology, diagnostics and energy-based healing, also including techniques for manipulating needles and moxa.
      - By the third week of this apprenticeship, the interns have a practical command of the therapeutic procedures for at least ten of the most common illnesses in their countries: dysentery, rheumatism, acid stomach and stomach ulcers, hypertension, etc.
      - Upon completion of this apprenticeship, the interns receive a Certificate of Participation in International Acupuncture Ambassadors Training.

Humanitarian aid: An Acupuncture Ambassadors view.

What is Humanitarian aid? An immense question, which no response can really define, as it is an action as complex as humanity itself. It can be said that it is a theater where all human interests meet, from the most selfish to the most altruistic: interest in others' welfare and their evolution, but also political and financial interests.

Nevertheless, those in the Third World continue to die, of hunger and disease.

We have certainly exported some spectacular techniques for survival. Life at all costs, or even at any cost, is this not the model of Western society? Yet this same society frequently fails to provide the means towards a decent quality of life for those whose existence it prolongs.

In fact, what awaits the "happy beneficiaries" of "humanitarian aid"? Doubtless it is best to cite one of them, an old African sage: "If you want to kill the proudest of men, give him every day just what he needs to eat. With patience you will make of him a helpless serf. What is most shaming for a people is to wait for another people to feed and clothe them, to the point of forgetting the language of their ancestors, of free men, until they can no longer say, 'It's not our fault."

Perhaps it is time to stop making beggars of these men, women and children. Perhaps the moment has come for a genuine sharing between rich and developing nations, so as to enrich each with the experience of the others while preserving freedom for all.

A Chinese proverb, often cited but too often forgotten, reminds us: "Better far to teach a hungry man to fish than to give him a fish already caught." Shouldn't all humanitarian aid take inspiration from this proverb, offering straightforward training and inexpensive practices suited to the needs of disadvantaged people, thereby contributing to their self-reliance?

On our proposed missions licensed volunteer acupuncturists provide care but also and most importantly transmit their techniques, thereby training more self-reliant medical assistants, since acupuncture with its curative and preventive qualities permits significant savings in drugs and medical procedures. Moreover, this training contributes to a respect for human dignity by avoiding too strong a dependency on the wealthier nations.

In this regard we at Acupuncture Ambassadors would like to cite the intentions, good works and right outcomes of a European organization with similar goals as ours. At the end of a first mission to Haiti conducted by the French/Swiss organization Acupuncture Without Borders, in February of 1996, a mission in which ten Haitian nurse-nuns participated, the president of "Aid Haiti" wrote the following:

"Very quickly, the Little Sisters of Saint Thérèse and I myself understood how privileged we were to learn the rudiments of this 'alternative' medicine, which permits us to care for and even heal many diseases without the misery of medicine costs, which in Haiti plagues the sick and many care-givers as well. Your students got started right away dispensing care. Their manner of presenting this new medical approach to the population depended upon their individual personalities, but was always convincing...

"The Haitian peasants accepted acupuncture care with ease and confidence, a confidence which became complete after they saw the positive results it provided. They even seemed to understand the workings of the 'little needles' better than those of imported medicines. Most of the sisters were flooded with requests for care, and some of them deplored the lack of time that prevented them from responding immediately and affirmatively to all the patients who wanted acupuncture treatment...

"The expenses for pharmaceutical products dropped significantly in the dispensaries that participated in this program. This drop occurred most of all in medicines for hypertension, acid stomach and rheumatism, three illnesses widespread in Haiti...

"All your students eagerly await your next mission. They all plan to be present, current events in Haiti permitting, so as to ensure the best possible outcome."

Three more missions took place, in February of 1997,1998, and 2000, each as exhilarating as the first, completely confirming the hopes contained in this endeavor. One participant concluded the three sessions with a telling comment: "This is aid for the littlest and the poorest, since the patients get better without medicine." To this comment, it must be added that the dispensaries run by the nurse-participants provide for a population of about four hundred thousand, living well below the poverty line.

We at Acupuncture Ambassadors will follow in the same footsteps as the Acupuncture Without Borders organization with our concern for health first and foremost.

Acupuncture Ambassadors (AA) International Charter

Article 1
AA is an organization completely independent of all political, religious or philosophical ties, which works in the interests of human rights.

Article 2
Action by AA is engaged by request of the concerned country, and is grounded in deep respect for local culture and practices, which alone can guarantee true change and genuine interchange on an equal basis.

Article 3
AA aims to improve the self-reliance of health care facilities in developing nations, by offering free of charge a foundation course in acupuncture as well as the corresponding supplies, with follow-up and evaluation of the action undertaken.

Liz has kindly agreed to become a moderator for the Integral Health pod. She brings an integrally informed awarensss of alternative health approaches to the discussion. She is also currently working toward becoming a naturopath.

Please join me in welcoming Liz to the team of moderators that includes myself, Seth, and Monica.

Here is some information about Liz that might give you a sense of where she comes from.

* * * * * *

I have always been interested in our environment and how we are a part of it. I got a BA in Environmental Studies in the late 80's. As an interdisciplinary major, it went a long way towards getting me to an integral awareness, but stopped just short. As anyone who's spent any time at all in univesity can tell you, the post-modernists rule, and it's a sort of intellectual and spiritual dead end.

When I had my son almost 16 years ago, everything changed. He was such a needy baby, even amongst needy babies, that I had to surrender myself to his care completely. This was a profound spiritual experience, though at the time I would have called it something else. When I learned, after yearrs of frustration, that he was on the autism spectrum, I finally had an answer for why life was so difficult. And I was also able to actually do something about it for the first time. Thus began my foray into integral health care, which didn't exist! I should say, “thus began my battle with the medical establishment.” But it's more than that; it's a complete paradigm change, and to anyone who has yet to experience it (I believe we all will–inevitably), it looks like one has gone mad.

It's a horribly long story, but I did get my son well, and in the process began to accept that I knew more than my doctors about his condition. I had taken not just his, but my whole family's health into my own hands, having come to the conclusion that western medicine is a woefully partial, pathological and corrupt method of delivering health care.

I was at a medical conference, about to go into the parents' side of the auditorium and it hit me: I want to be going into the physician's entrance and hear that lecture. I want to know more, and I can't just learn on my own. I want to be a doctor. Becoming a naturopath is my goal, and I hope to be in medical school within 2 years. Currently, I'm in the midst of reorganizing my whole life and taking classes toward that goal.

Liz,

I wouldn't be too worried about the naturopathic schools, though NCNM might be a better fit for you. Though they don't know too much about the word "integral", the intellectual atmosphere is pretty diverse and pretty much covers all four quadrants. You will just have to do some work to bring them together.

But, then, that's kind of what BodyTalk does. I believe it is going to sweep through the naturopathic community like wildfire precisely because it does such a beautiful job of bringing diverse concepts and views of health and healing together. Even though I don't use the medicines that I learned of in school anymore, I am SO thankful for the intimate knowledge of the miraculous complexity of the human body that I was left with after five years of being steeped in naturopathic health care.

So...I'd love to talk more about BodyTalk and how it might integrate into your life, but I'm wondering if I should start a new thread. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
-Travis

      Hi Liz,

When I lived in Seattle, one of my friends was a doctor who went through the program at Bastyr. He had never heard of integral anything. Although he asked me a lot of questions (we spent a lot of car time going to soccer games), I don't think he ever really bought in.

I understand your reservations.

BUT . . . .

As a personal trainer, there is nothing even remotely integral about any of the major certifications (the ones that can actually get you hired). I've adopted my own approach with as much integral stuff as I can. Mostly, what this looks like is me doing all the training/nutrition stuff that is part of my job, but also trying to support some emotional awareness. I also try to help my clients see how the culture and social structures impact their health.

AQAL has many uses in whatever profession we choose, but as people interested in health, there is a lot we can do on our own to employ integral theory and practive with our clients.

This is a rich area for conversation, so I will start a new thread on this topic.

Peace,
Bill

Hi, travis. This is really exciting stuff! i hope to be a naturopathic physician someday, and the surprising lack of an integral approach is one of the things that has worried me about going threough medical school. I have a friend who was graduated from Bastyr who found that he had to teach his teachers about integral. I have blazed enough trails in my lifetime, thanks, and would prefer to get my money's worth out of med school. I already pay too much for health insurance just so I can educate my conventional doctor about things...

Please DO tell us more about Body Talk, especially how you think it will fit into a practice and any advice you'd have for a potential student.

Liz

      Hello all,

My name is Travis. I am a naturopathic physician and BodyTalk practitioner. I suppose what I am doing is integrating my healing practice, my business practice, and my spiritual practice.

I became passionate about an integral approach to health care in medical school when I read A Brief History of Everything. It made so much sense. Later, I wrote my mission statement for a practice based on the integral model.

I got away from the ideal, though, in the next two years. I struggled to try and unite different facets of medicine. Basically, I had too many tools in my toolbox and didn't know how and when to apply them to any individual patient. In my view, this is the hardest thing about an integral approach. Especially when you start talking about how to integrate multiple practitioners into some kind of healing spectrum.

Anyway, I eventually became aware of a system of healing called BodyTalk that has totally transformed my life. It is the first truly holistic system of medicine that I have ever seen (and I've seen a lot) and I am blown away by how well it works.

One day, after learning BodyTalk, I had the sudden realization that I was practicing integral medicine! I got on the internet and read an introduction to a integral health care book that KW had written and thought "wow, it's all in here." A BodyTalk session can heal parts of all four quadrants, and it is somewhat dependent on the health and clarity of the practitioner.

As you can probably tell, I'm pretty damn excited about the whole thing, and I'd like to share it. Also, I'd like to see what else people are doing in an effort to manifest a concrete form of integral health care.

Thanks for reading.
-Travis
