Zig Zag Wanderer: Songs to Dance To

What a beautiful sight, someone carving up their groove like that. :) I am really digging Captain Beefheart’s tunes, - which I’ve never really heard, as I’ve led a really sheltered life. ;)

Here’s a micro-disco for ya’ll good people. You can dust the cobwebs off with this one for starters. Ummm, and then perhaps a bit of turtle soup. And a little fairy cake for dessert.

Lisa, I love the turtles! That might be the new Integral Archipelago theme song.  :)

Do you really like Captain Beefheart? Not a lot of women do. Those are great songs, though. He gets pretty far out sometimes, but he has some great ones. Can you dance to this?  :) :)

He grew up with Frank Zappa, and the two recorded and performed together sometimes. Frank talks about him here.

Haha! Yep, it’s a perfect theme tune. Yep, I really do like Captain Beefheart. :) I used to listen to loads of stuff like that, including Mr Zappa who was a top fav. I have to admit, the latest C.B-heart installment made me laugh more than dance. :) But yep, I could have got very funny on the dancefloor to that one, he’s sufficiently quirky.

Here’s a little cutesty one for starters: Bouge de la - & one to kick your kosmic shoes off too: Revival

You don’t know how happy I am that we are discussing Captain Beefheart! I never thought I would see it!  :)

James, what a great performance of Bat Chain Puller! I think I enjoyed that more than any other time I have heard the song. Lisa, yes, I think we might be able to dance to it! :) Because of the cool drummer. But those are truly danceable ones you posted.  :)

Bruce, that is a great song! I actually enjoyed that more than any other time I had listened to it as well. Maybe there’s something to listening to songs in an intersubjective space that makes it more pleasurable, but that was really cool. There’s some really cool stuff in there, as well as in the Meat Puppets song.

James, I think there are two stories that go around about his name. One is quite disturbing, yes, and I won’t repeat it. :) The other is simply that he had a beef in his heart about society, and he mentioned that one in a relatively recent interview. I kind of think that’s it.

Here is a really great one. Can you dance to that?  :)

‘Joyous disbelief!’ Ha, that’s a good reason to shake the head James. :) I tend to dance like that at least once a week. :)

Yep David, Abba Zaba Muse was groovable! :) you are spinning a crazy disco! :)

Here’s a nice smooth one: Funki Porcini - Long Road & maybe a touch of Mr Scruff ahhhhh, nice. I am finding since I’ve been folding myself into 5 rhythms dance class that I am fully appreciating the groove of less hectic tunes. Which is a personal breakthrough, as chaos - was my former groove comfort zone.

I was going to post another Os Mutantes song, but it's going have to be another from the Captain and His Magic Band (if you're only getting it out of one speaker/earphone, you're not the only one; it wasn't always that way, though). They recently took off the Captain's version.

Nice thread… lots of great tunes to get your grove on!

The core of this next song is decent.  It's a shorten version of the Black Eyed Peas song 'The Elephunk Theme', which is also accompanied by an excellent dance routine from an eleven year old girl.  It's a great fusion of two distinct styles of music that is bound to get most people moving.  The name of the Indian singer who is sampled in the song is S. Janaki… she has an amazing voice!

I'm glad you liked it, Lisa. Isn't it great! I found the Captain's version!!!!!

Seth, that is amazing! What a wild fusion. It works beautifully.

It's amazing that it can blend those hip hop rhthyms with the Indian rhythms like that. Sometimes it sounds as though it is the two going at once, and then other times it goes from hip hop right into the indian rhythm and then back.

I think we're going to see some really wild art come out of India in the coming years.

Does anyone know anything about Nandalal Bose, by the way? There is an exhibition of his art coming to Chicago soon. They describe him as being the father of modern Indian art.

Uh, right, the video has been deleted from YouTube.

I guess this is due to a copyright problem here in Germany. The GEMA, a institution to protect the rights of muscians, demands to be paid by U-Tube for every single stream of a copy-protected artists. In fact, they want one cent every time someone watches the Music Vid. YouTube refused to do so (because this would totally ruin their finances) and deleted all copy-protected Music Vids from the German Version of their Website.

So if you want to listen to the song be 'The Killers' called 'Human', please buy the album to support the company errr… the artist. Thank you.

Or use Bit Torrent or Pirate Bay to download the whole album without paying a cent. Do as you like.

P.S. I found out that 'The Killers' are not trendy enough to be deleted. Only the embed function was disabled. Watch the vid here

Christophe, indeed another smash!

Yes, they're doing the same thing in the United States, taking songs off YouTube, only it's UMG here, mostly it seems, Universal Music Group. They seem to have been particularly active the first few months of this year. In some cases it's more individual, like the Zappa Family Trust.

I've found, though, if you google a song, particularly with the word “myspace” or “myspace music,” you can often find it online somewhere else.

Ah Lisa! The Chemical Brothers!

My introduction to quality electronic music came around a midnight in 2001, driving back from Salisbury to Oxford in a friend's car after a drumming performance. He had just had a new stereo speaker system installed and wanted to show it off. “Choose a CD”, he said.

I fished around… “Ah The Chemical Brothers, I heard these are supposed to be pretty good”….little did I know.

Prior to this, I was strictly a “synthesisers? computers? all that bleep bleep nonsense? that's not real music!! grow your hair!!” kind of guy. Thankfully, after having the whole of the Chemical Brothers' Surrender album blasted at me for the whole journey, my idea of what good music was would never be the same again!  :-)

Hi David, thanks :), that was very wild & entertaining! A real corker! He's a real head bender, his music makes me feel like I've just got off a merry-go-round & I am trying to retain balance. Or is that just me getting into the Captain Beefheart spirit? :) Umm, I think the latter. :)

- That's a nice little story James. I love it when that happens, when our preconceived ideas about something, suddenly, in a flash get fully laid to rest.
The Chemical Brothers, a stereo and a long drive on a motorway seem like the perfect ingredients for that to happen. :) Excellent.

Lisa, that was really cool! The first two put me a trance, and then one of my favorite Beatles songs!

Here's another Beatles you can dance to, though it might be hard to picture it. I think the Jerry Garcia Band might have played it—or no, the Grateful Dead used to play it, and then a group from hometown played it once.

There are pictures of Rishikesh because John wrote the song there, about Mia Farrow's sister, Prudence, as you probably know.

Actually, I was right the first time—it was the Jerry Garcia Band. The Grateful Dead used to sing “Hey Jude.”

But what was really danceable was when the Jerry Garcia Band or the Grateful Dead played “Tangled Up in Blue.”

Lua, sol, que me dão seu calor

E eu… e eu
E eu… e eu

Que me dá a direção
